What is a factor?

A factor is a whole number that divides another number evenly, without leaving anything behind. In simple terms, if you can divide a number by another number and get a whole result, then that number is a factor.

For example, when we divide 12 by 3, the result is 4. Since there is no remainder, 3 is a factor of 12. The same goes for 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12.

Factors always come in pairs. When one number divides evenly, there is always another number on the other side of the multiplication. That’s why factor pairs like (3, 4) or (2, 6) exist for the number 12.

Good to know: Every number greater than 1 has at least two factors — 1 and the number itself. If those are the only two factors, the number is called a prime number.

Quick tip: If your number is prime (like 97), the “Factors” list will be short: just 1 and 97. The “Prime factors” view will basically say “it’s prime.”
