Is there any rhyme or reason to how the infobox decides the number of decimal places for its displayed figures? I have been unable to find a pattern the the output of auto or of filling in population density per square kilometer and per square mile. --Idacticus (talk) 02:58, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Idacticus: I believe Template:Infobox settlement uses the significant figures of the multiplication, with a minimum of two. This is based just on a moderately cursory look at the infobox code, Template:Infobox settlement/densdisp, and Help:Convert#Rounding, so I'm not entirely sure. - The most common problem is when it rounds to 4 figs instead of 2 at random, but I'll link the next time I see it do 1.
- It definitely happens if you set either the average population per square kilometer or per square mile to auto and then put xxx.x0 in the other box (e.g. 174.60 in the people per square kilometer field will make people per square mile round to the first decimal and list people per square kilometer as 174.6). - @NorthGate77: Editing on subjects to which you are related is strongly discouraged by Wikipedia guidelines. If you are sure that you wish to write such a page, I would encourage you to read the conflict of interest guideline. The notability guideline and neutral point of view policy are also useful for writing articles, and Help:Your first article has further useful information. Before you do so, I would encourage you to read the neutral point of view policy that I linked, as well as the notability guideline, so that you can understand the tone in which articles should be written, as well as how Wikipedia determines whether topics are sufficiently notable to be appropriate for an article.
