Categories

For future reference, reverting other editors' edits is only for if those edits were erroneous, and is not for "the edit was correct under the circumstances but then you changed the circumstances after the fact". That is, if I remove a redlinked category from a page because it does not exist, and then you decide to create the category afterward, then that is not a "revert my edit to put the page back into the category" situation — the thing is that I get slapped in the face with a big red notification that my edit was reverted, which I do not deserve because my edit was not an error. So in a situation like that, you readd the category as a new edit, and not as a revert of my edit, because my edit was not a mistake at the time and I am entitled to receive zero blowback for it.

Reversion is only for errors, and not for situations like you deciding to create a new category after it was removed from pages for its failure to already exist. Deal with such situations while leaving my notification queue out of it. Bearcat (talk) 01:32, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

Per the edit summary (example), I did not "create the category afterward", I renamed an existing, incorrectly capitalised, category.

The sequence of events was:

1. I used WP:AWB to change instances of "Huon Pine" to "Huon pine", per MOS:COMMONNAME, across multiple articles. Although not explicitly intended, that incidentally included the category for articles in the incorrectly capitalised Category:Huon Pine. (example)
2. I then noticed the incorrectly capitalised Category:Huon Pine, so submitted a request for a speedy rename of the category.
3. You removed the articles from the correctly cased but (at that time) not-yet-renamed, thus non-existent, Category:Huon pine. (example).
4. The category was renamed.
5. I reverted your edits, restoring the category, with the reason ("category ... was renamed") in the edit summary. (example) In this case "Undo" was the simplest and quickest way to restore the now-renamed category. On review I realise that I forgot to include the reason on one of the four reverts , for which I apologize.

Firstly, categories cannot be refiled into redlinked categories with pending rename proposals in advance of the renaming actually happening for real. Regardless of how any category should or shouldn't be named in theory, articles cannot be moved into an alternate-named category in advance of the existing category having been moved to that name — the category gets renamed first and then the pages get moved into the new category second' not vice versa.

Secondly, when I'm doing redlinked category cleanup, it is not my responsibility to spend five to ten minutes on each individual category investigating the history of how it ended up in a redlinked category — especially on this run of the redlinked category report, when a major technical screwup resulted in the list containing over 1,100 redlinked categories — and that's not a typo, I really did mean "one thousand eleven hundred" for real. So if I spent ten minutes investigating each redlink, thus getting through them at a rate of just six categories per hour, it would have taken me eight days of 24/7 editing to clear the entire list, or up to sixteen days if I actually wanted to take time for food, sleep, toilet habits or mental health breaks. That's just not a thing anybody has a right to expect or demand of other people at all.

So my job is not to spend ten minutes researching each redlinked category, it's to make the redlink go away in one or two seconds and move on, and especially not this thousandaire time (but not any other time either) I'm just not taking any lectures from anybody about how I should have done anything differently than I did.

It's on you to make sure that your edits aren't leaving pages filed in redlinked categories, not on me to invest extra time into researching whether any given redlink represents a unfinished renaming proposal or not. Even if you do propose a category for renaming, the pages have to stay in the bluelinked existing category until the renaming has taken place, and cannot be reassigned to the redlinked new category proposal in advance of the conclusion of the process.
