Creating a Fate (franchise) page

[edit]

About two years ago, DJK brought up this point, which seems to have gone ignored: "Does anyone else think that the name of this article should simply be changed to something along the lines of "Fate (franchise), since it includes not only Fate/Stay Night, but Fate/Zero, Fate/Grand Order, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, Fate/Prototype, Fate/Extra, Fate/Extra CCC, Fate/Extella, Fate/Grand Order - First Order, Fate/Extra: Last Encore, as well as probably several others."

Seeing how the original Fate/stay night page is attempting to list everything, despite how massive & mainstream the franchise has become now - not just in Japan, but globally - this is starting to get a bit ridiculous. Even the ones with only the loosest connection to this game, like Fate/Apocrypha & Fate/Grand Order, are being listed here. We now have audiences understanding "Fate/" as its own franchise without ever having heard of F/SN. The more those get expanded on, adapted into anime, and picked up by mainstream media like Netflix, and treated as their own entities, the more bizarre it'll get to keep track of it all here.

By now, can we all agree that creating a Fate (franchise) page to contain the list is a must? In my opinion, it would simplify things both for readers and editors. Knowing how often the Marvel and Fate franchises get compared, the fact that the MCU has its own page just shows we could make this a lot more accessible to readers.

I believe we've reached the point where this is justified. Of course, I am a new Wikipedian, so do let me know if there's a procedure I'm missing here! :) --ManaDragon (talk) 04:40, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@ManaDragon: Yes, I am all for it. Especially, as was brought out on it's page, for adaptaitions of FGO.Smeagol 17 (talk) 14:17, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
If there is enough content, I don't see why not. However, I would recommend using materials from the Russian wikipedia. I mean, I this visual novel seems to be lacking sources when compared to the Russian wikipedia.Tintor2 (talk) 20:42, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

It is by definition a franchise at this point. It is not just the visual novels, it is also the adaptations, original works/spinoffs, as well as the merchandising. --Izno (talk) 15:45, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Whatever everyone thinks is best. Its both a franchise and a series. I just think one is easier to type. that's all I wanted to add.Blue Pumpkin Pie (talk) 15:57, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
This might count as "other stuff" but the Persona FA article is titled Persona (series).Tintor2 (talk) 19:37, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Oh guys... Yup, Fate/ is series or franchise — both terms are correct. Sadly but I've never ever seen in appropriative reliable sourses the significant coverage of ″Fate/ franchise″ term (WP:GNG). In Russian Wikipedia if created article with such topic would be deleted as an original research with not shown notability. To create Fate (franchise) article first of all we need to find survey sources from WP:A&M/I list. Of course fan-made survey articles do exist, but it's bad for Wikipedia to rely on such sources. Dantiras (talk) 20:26, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
This is true, but you can say the same about F/SN novel itself. Smeagol 17 (talk) 17:52, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
This novel is top raited in all japanese VN raitings and is mentioned in some anime/other game reviews and even scientific works. More correct to say this about Kagetsu Tohya. Dantiras (talk) 19:04, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Those novel ratings mostly have the same notability as those fan sites. As an alternative, we could restructure Type-moon article, if you think notability will be a problem for Fate/. Smeagol 17 (talk) 06:34, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Series overview table?

[edit]

I propose a series overview table for the various TV anime adaptations of Fate franchise works. I've already added one for the anime based on the main "stay night" visual novel. I'll also be adding one for klPI on the List of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya episodes page. MarcoPolo250 (talk) 17:17, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't that imply that we have to create a main Fate article to focus on the franchise and leave this to focus on the visual novel? Also, a bit off topic, but we have tables for the songs but I don't think are sourced.Tintor2 (talk) 17:43, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dani Cavallaro's publications have been designated as generally unreliable sources in this discussion at the reliable sources noticeboard. The problem with a Fate franchise article is that there is very little written about the franchise as a whole, which is needed for a standalone article. I had tried to start a draft article at Draft:Fate (franchise) last year, but abandoned it because I was unable to expand it beyond a basic list. GranCavallo (talk) 16:21, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Fate/stay nightFate/Stay NightMOS:TITLECAPS forbids English titles from being lowercase when it is merely a stylistic choice. I am therefore surprised the article has been at this title for so long. If it is moved, this should apply to all sub-articles of the franchise as well. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 10:27, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Oppose: First, MOS:TITLECAPS does not explicitly forbid English titles from being lowercase when it is merely a stylistic choice; Stylistic choice is not mentioned in that section. That section says that title case is normally followed, not that it must be followed, so I believe keeping stylistic capitalization is acceptable. Second, MOS:NONENGTITLE says to "retain the style of the original for modern works" for non-English titles. Fate/stay night is a Japanese work (even though the title is in English), so keeping the official capitalization is appropriate according to the manual of style. GranCavallo (talk) 13:46, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Fate/stay night is not a "non-English title", the game is extremely well-known in English where it is typically called that. And it states that all titles of works should be capitalized as proper names, so there is clearly no carve-out for stylistic situations. I don't see why there would be. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 18:28, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree with ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ, MOS:NONENGTITLE does not apply here. This game's title is in English. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 19:40, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to the Type-Moon Fandom, "The title 'Fate/stay night' comes from Nasu liking slashes after writing Tsukihime and wishing to preserve the word "Fate" in the old title as well as wanting to pair it with the English word "night", to finally desiring the title to sound like the name of a visual keiWP band". Not sure whether changing this would change or obscure meaning or intent of the text. Wh1pla5h99 (talk) 21:25, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Support. Per MOS:ROMANCAPS, "the relevant publicity departments or fanbases may vehemently insist on the importance of the capitalization. However, these names and name elements are not excluded from the guidance provided by the main manuals of style for English-language Wikipedia...".
Wikipedia style also overrides the stylization of Bleach (manga). Assuming there is nothing different here, we should consistently apply the rules. 999333a (talk) 22:00, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Support title case for title of work, per MOS:TITLECAPS. Wh1pla5h99 (talk) 21:25, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Fate/Stay Night as proposed. Fate/Stay Night is commonly used by English-language sources cited in the article and in other sources I found online. There is significant variation but this aligns with typical practices and appears to be the style used by sources not affiliated with Type-Moon and not strongly associated with anime or video game fandom. I'm not finding usage that supports Fate: Stay Night. Our guidelines permit swapping dashes and colons for subtitles and similar changes, especially when usage in sources is mixed or when usage by reliable sources overwhelmingly prefers one style that differs from cover art. We do not invent styles. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 16:17, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Indifferent on this but is it really inventing a style? It is house style on Wikipedia to use colons for subtitles, and I don't think its a stretch (based on the poster) to read Stay Night as a subtitle. Wh1pla5h99 (talk) 16:24, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, perhaps I should have said: We don't impose a style to invent an article title that's not used elsewhere. Although MOS:TMCAPS uses the same language I did:

Do not invent new styles that are not used by independent reliable sources.

The consistent theme across all the relevant guidance is that Wikipedia follows usage in independent, reliable, English-language sources. Our article title should not be unique. When usage is mixed, we may default to house style or standard English conventions as a sort of tie breaker. Before telling us not to invent styles, MOS:TMCAPS says:

When deciding how to format a trademark, editors should examine styles already in use by independent reliable sources. From among those, choose the style that most closely resembles standard English – regardless of the preference of the trademark owner.

MOS:JAPAN mostly covers romanization, songs and other works that don't have English-language versions, and guidance on selecting the appropriate title when there is no clear "common name" in English. My read of the sources is that Fate/stay night might actually be more common, but Fate/Stay Night is sufficiently common, especially in sources aimed at a more general audience. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 19:30, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Support: Either Fate/Stay Night or even better Fate: Stay Night. It's a title used in Wikipedia, so we should format it in Wikipedia style. Simple. SchreiberBike |   18:21, 12 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm neutral on the caps but entirely opposed to a colon. There is not a single reliable source that would ever refer to anything in the Fate franchise like that. It's simply not a thing. ScalarFactor (talk) 02:06, 14 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I wondered when this game would be submitted for a GA. Signing up for a review as part of the June drive. I'll be reading this over the next day!

Images Look fine to me mostly - mainly free-to-use images. The game screenshot I would say is justified. The infobox cover justification is fine, but a new source is required as the amazon link is dead.

Apologies for the delay on this, especially with what I am about to say
I'm sorry to say I don't think this is ready for GA status yet. I had quite a few concerns when reading through, and the amount of work to address them is going to take a while. My main concern is that this is a very lengthy article for the size of the subject, and there's often times where the focus is lacking. 5500 words is within an allowed range for a wiki article, but based on what I've read so far there is a lot of fat that could be trimmed around the edges. Beyond this, there's a few questions about weight and what needs to be covered.
Lede:
  • It covers what I'd expect, although I'd admittedly very familiar with the series. At 400+ words this is on the long side for a page's lede. Most leads for G/FAs are about 250-400 words. It's worth considering what exactly is important to a newcomer _specifically for Fate/Stay Night._ I.e. is a newcomer really going to care about the mangas author's details and series length, or is it better to just tell them the manga exists? One starting point is not needing to list all the ports of Realta Nua's dates and all the film details, but I'd encourage you to have a look yourself to see if the wording can be tightened here. For example, "Type-Moon later went on to produce an adult spin-off" -> "Type-Moon later produced an adult spin-off"
  • Is spin-off also the right way to refer to F/HA too? I have only ever seen it called a sequel.
  • Because so much room is taken up with the console/manga releases, the _far_ more important point about F/SN's legacy and success is given two sentences. This is something that should be expanded, even if it's just saying why it's so highly rated.
Gameplay
  • There is nothing in source 1 supporting the affection meter, nor the True Ending. While the game notes your choices, the flagcheck isn't available to players.
  • There is nothing in source 1 calling the series dark fantasy.
  • The first paragraph could be trimmed - sentences like "The time between these decision points is variable" don't add much. For example, a quick rewrite I tried was:

Fate/Stay Night is a dark fantasy visual novel, in which gameplay entirely consists of reading narration and dialogue. Players are regularly presented with choices that determine the story's progression. The game is divided into three routes, Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel, each centered on one of the story's main heroines and presenting different scenarios. The routes are unlocked sequentially, requiring multiple playthroughs to experience the complete story, and each have multiple endings depending on the player's earlier choices.

Plot
  • Plot synopsis for each section matches my memory of the game.
  • In general, this reads like you/the original editor have tried to squeeze in every event possible rather than go for a synopsis. While admirable this means there's parts that are very overly-explained. "he is attacked, as witnesses of the supernatural are generally supposed to be eliminated." could just be "to eliminate him as a witness". "even if people often abuse his generosity at his stage." is also just an aside. Here is one more rewrite to show how this could be tightened.

The story follows Shirou Emiya, a teenager living in Fuyuki City who is drawn into the Fifth Holy Grail War, a battle royale in which mages, known as Masters, command summoned Heroic Spirits called Servants to compete for the Holy Grail, an artifact said to grant any wish. Shirou is the sole survivor of a fire that devastated the city ten years earlier and was adopted by the late mage Kiritsugu Emiya. Due to his survivor's guilt, Shirou strives to emulate Kiritsugu's ideal of becoming a "hero of justice", {I think that was the right phrase?}, seeking to help others whenever possible and practicing magecraft despite his limited aptitude.

After witnessing a battle between two Servants at his school, Shirou is targeted by the spear-wielding Servant Lancer to eliminate him as a witness. Although he narrowly survives the encounter, he is pursued to his home, where he inadvertently summons Saber, a Servant who becomes his protector. The summoning establishes Shirou as a Master, formally drawing him into the Holy Grail War.

  • You should include a line on where exactly the routes split. As it reads, the split occurs immediately after Saber is summoned, which isn't correct.
  • "The first of the three heroines, Saber, is a mighty warrior who keeps her identity secret, hence her substitute name after her role as a member of the Saber class. She also serves as the route's servant protagonist." Again, redundant. Something like "The first route follows Shirou's Servant Saber, who initially refuses to share her identity with Shirou" is enough
  • She was the victor of the Fourth Holy Grail War with another Master and claimed to be the strongest out of all Servants in the Saber Class. I vaguely remember her victory only being revealed later on but I may be misremembering.
  • "seeks to ally with Rin" . You haven't introduced Rin. From what I remember the prologue had Rin as the POV, may be worth adding "Prologue" as a header somewhere.
  • Artoria's lost swords, the Sword-in-the-Stone Caliburn, in combat. This is a big thing to throw in without context to newcomers. In fact, you haven't revealed Saber's identity as King Arthur here at all.
  • Gilgamesh should be wikilinked and it mentioned that he is a secret 8th entrant in the war.
  • No explanation is given about why Kotomine wants to use Illya's body to recreate the Holy Grail.
  • In UBW's section, Rin's intro has the same opening problem as Saber's. Additionally details like "The Ice Queen" aren't important.
  • The bit about Shirou getting mortally wounded I believe should have been covered earlier in the prologue.
  • You haven't introduced Sakura Matou the first time she is mentioned. A wikilink doesn't count unfortunately.
  • Why have you put references in to random days of the VN and not others? I believe it's fine to remove all of these as Fate/Stay Night can act as its own source.
  • The same issue for Sakura's intro. Currently this reads as if Sakura's relation to Rin occurs immediately upon starting HF, which I don't believe is the case.
  • Angra Mainyu is introduced without introduction.
  • You haven't introduced Assassin, let alone True Assassin.
  • Rider's wikilink goes to the wrong place.
  • In general, I suspect the idea of trying to introduce the heroines in their own section rather than just stick to the events of the route is causing more issues than its solving.
After this, I skipped ahead to "Critical response" for a break but this also has several issues. Ignoring length, the sections focuses more on critically analysing Shirou than the game itself and is very undue weight-wise. If I'm on this page, I want to know about the game specifically, why am I getting paragraph after paragraph about Shirou only rather than gameplay, legacy, soundtrack? Rin, Saber and Sakura getting a throwaway line only makes this even more odd. It's very unfocused at the moment. Additionally, sentences like "Many reviewers felt the Heaven's Feel story arc was the "deepest", due to the sharp and versatile disclosure of the image of Sakura Matou,[104][105] and her romantic line with Shirou is the most "adult" among all the heroines.[105]" when 105 is a Type-Moon book is very concerning. The Remaster getting an infobox of reviews but not the more-important base-game is also an odd choice. A very big rewrite in my eyes is needed here. Port most of this to Shirou's own page if not already there, and keep his analysis concise. Balance this out with the 3 heroines. Find reviews/sources that aren't connected to Type-Moon as well.
With these sort of concerns halfway through the review, I'm afraid I don't think this is ready for GA status yet and is unlikely to be over the course of a longer review. While this has a lot of good info and has all the details I'd expect, there's at least two sections I feel need a complete rewrite, and I haven't read the whole page. I'd be happy to help out with the plot synopsis, but it'd be worth out seeing if you can get a hand for the other sections in the Anime WP as they're typically a friendly bunch.

Requested move 6 August 2026

[edit]

– A lot of sources tend to use lowercase letters (except for the initial F in "Fate") when discussing the series, including the series logo itself. However, not all sources do this. It makes me question how this article's title should be capitalized. Having MOS:TITLECAPS in mind, I think we should reconsider capitalization in line with MOS:NONENGTITLE, as this series (despite having its title in English) originated in Japan. Not quite sure how MOS:SERIESTITLE would apply here. In solidarity, Gommeh (talk 🎮 sign) 16:53, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Note: the third proposal has been altered because "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works" is a redirect, and redirects are ineligible to be current titles in move requests. P.I. Ellsworth, ed.  welcome!  01:05, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
That seems to indicate that the article is WP:MISPLACED. A redirect at a base name should not point to a disambiguated use of the same base topic name. — BarrelProof (talk) 01:14, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose As per the previous discussion and Wikipedia guidelines, title case must be used. While the series originated in Japan, the title is in English and commonly used in the West. There doesn't appear to be a convincing argument to ignore the guidelines in this case. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 07:15, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. I agree with BarrelProof and others—this is an English title and we should therefore default to standard English capitalization conventions for titles of works. An exception would be called for if the overwhelming majority of independent, reliable secondary sources used the nonstandard capitalization (as with k.d. lang or eBay). However, the nominator notes that sources are at best inconsistent and many do use the standard English convention. I agree that MOS:NONENGTITLE does not apply here and the general guidance on titles of works does. Additionally, we have guidance at MOS:ROMANCAPS that specifically addresses non-standard capitalization of English language names/titles for Japanese titles, products, etc. ROMANCAPS specifically addresses all caps but the spirit of the guidance is that we should normalize all non-standard capitalization. The guidance has been interpreted this way in other RMs, e.g., Talk:Jon-Yakitory#Requested move 22 August 2025. This is also consistent with the guidance at MOS:TMCAPS and with recent RMs for related Fate/Stay Night titles. I appreciate the nom's inquiry. I think it is a reasonable question and is worthwhile to confirm consensus for all of these titles. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 18:03, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
