yesterday, i attended What the Hack by Devfolio. the goal of this hackathon was to build something with zero utility instead of solving a "real" problem. i messed around and accidentally built something "useful". Heavily inspired by my favourite editing tool, Hemingway Editor, i vibe coded Lemmingway - an editor that "helps" you degrade your writing, and can even make it look like you let your cat loose on your keyboard. and it's available as an API, too. try it out here: https://lnkd.in/gcSazQcX what i loved about the event was that the organisers truly committed to the no-utility bit. midway through the hackathon, we were handed a stack overflow QnA bank for all the tough questions that LLMs couldn't answer. like how to center a div. Team Devfolio, thank you for the💡/10 experience. more hackathons should let you build something pointless on purpose. it's a good reminder that not everything needs a roadmap or a business case. "Sovereignty matters locally. Not nationally." Nobody in the room clapped for that one. Because the most uncomfortable line at a Sovereign AI event is the one that says not every country gets to have one. I was in Bengaluru yesterday at The State of Sovereign AI, hosted by Sarvam and People+ai, at the Devfolio office. The framing was simple. Sovereign AI is the shift from renting AI to owning it. Then the disagreement started, and that is what made it worth attending. David Joseph Menezes from People+AI made the case against. India does not own an email company. No search engine. Not even a laptop company. We managed fine. Sovereignty is about local ownership, not a national flag. And most countries will never build a frontier model anyway. Sehaj Virk made the case for. India is currently an exporter of data. Safety, trust and control together are what sovereignty actually buys you. He also pointed to where it is already live in government use: security tooling, optimisation, and edge models running on a phone with no internet. Vinayak Gavariya put it in a way that stuck. We did not run a nuclear test or send a rocket to the moon because it was the cheap option. We did it because capability nobody can revoke is worth paying for. Shraddha Kulkarni made the socio cultural case. A model that does not carry your languages does not carry your context either. Which is why 100+ Indian languages is not a feature, it is the whole point. Then came the question nobody had a clean answer for. If open source models are free for everyone, why can't every country build sovereign AI? Cost and compute. You can download the model. You cannot download the data centre. I walked in expecting a pitch. I got a real argument instead. Both sides were right about something. On India's Independence day, I gave a short talk at Devfolio's HQ about what I've been up to lately at Lossfunk: "Does it make sense to make sense?" Thanks to Devfolio's CEO, Denver Dsouza, for inviting me and giving me the stage, and to the catalyst Arnav B., founder of Lagrange Point for helping make this happen and for everything you’re doing! On reflection, I realised just how optimistic I am about India’s odds of contributing to the frontier, as I see ecosystems like these emerge, willing to welcome and tolerate high-variance risks to gamble at the edge of knowledge itself.
