🚀 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 Meet William D. and Sidiq O., the team behind 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲. Optivise automates A/B testing for websites. It generates different versions of a page, runs experiments, compares the results, and helps teams put the best-performing version into production. They arrived at DubHacks focused on building a strong project. The Next track made them step back and think about whether they were building something people would actually use. “𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨. 𝙄𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙛𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝.” That meant thinking about customers, product-market fit, and what would make someone choose Optivise outside of a hackathon. The experience stuck with them. Since DubHacks, they’ve continued building products and using many of the same ideas that helped shape Optivise. “𝙄’𝙙 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙥 𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚.” Congratulations to William and Sidiq for building a project they were proud to pitch, and for sticking with the founder mindset long after the weekend ended. 🐾 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 One weekend at the largest hackathon in the PNW and you’ll be amazed at how much you can take away! We’re spotlighting T-Mobile’s experience at the hackathon, which shows 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁. We chatted with Christina Claure, who gave us some insight into what it was like sponsoring. "𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙪𝙗𝙃𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙪𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙗𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙩.” With some of PNW’s strongest contests, T-Mobile was able to observe that passion up close while increasing their brand visibility. “[𝙃𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙨] 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙏𝙀𝙈 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚, 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡-𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙨. "𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙖 𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙨, 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙚.” And for any team curious about sponsoring, this was her key takeaway: “𝙈𝙮 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣-𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚. A shoutout to Kevin Lau, UW ECE Alum and last year’s incredible speaker. We’re so thankful for everyone’s energy, spirit, and avid support of UW programs that continue to highlight student voices! 🚀 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 Rome wasn’t built in a day. 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝘀. Meet Kai Black, David Gesl, Sebastian Torresola, and Trenston Ricks, the team behind 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗺, winner of the 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 T-Mobile 𝟱𝗚 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. The idea began after team members traveled to Japan and repeatedly struggled to find accessible Wi-Fi. They wondered: what if local businesses could offer their internet connection to nearby customers for a small fee? Roam allows businesses to add their Wi-Fi to a shared network and offer access for preset time periods. Customers can view participating businesses through Google Maps, choose a nearby location, pay through the app, and connect when they are within range. But they did not exactly start the weekend at full speed. “𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙭 𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙧 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙝 𝙍𝙤𝙮𝙖𝙡𝙚, 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙩 𝙖 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡-𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙛𝙛.” Using the Raspberry Pi provided by T-Mobile, they built the backend of the service and paired it with a mobile app, an interactive map, and a payment system. They also experimented with an AI tool that could eventually help business owners understand and manage their Wi-Fi networks using simple commands. Their biggest takeaway? 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘄, but being ambitious can still take you surprisingly far. “𝘿𝙪𝙗𝙃𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙨 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙡𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙪𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏-𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. 🚀 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 What happens when students are given a real-world challenge, industry support, and 36 hours to build? They create ideas like 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆: 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆, winner of the 𝗗𝘂𝗯𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 Visa 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸! Built by Violette D., Owen Krause, and Havel Konda, Minty turns brushing teeth into a game where consistency builds value. Using Gemini Vision to verify brushing in real time, children can watch their “tooth portfolio” grow after every successful brush. Parents set the reward rate through a dashboard, and when a tooth falls out, the child receives a payout based on the value they built through healthy habits. The result is more than a fun app! Minty combines dental hygiene, financial literacy, and compound growth in a way children can understand. “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡-𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.” The team designed the experience in Figma and built it using Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Prisma, Tailwind CSS, Gemini Vision, and Stripe. When technical obstacles disrupted their original plan, they adapted quickly, changed direction, and still delivered a functioning full-stack product before the deadline. That is what sponsors get to witness at DubHacks: how students solve problems, respond to constraints, collaborate under pressure, and turn ambitious ideas into working technology. For the Minty team, the best moment came when every part finally connected. “𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙙𝙚, 𝘼𝙄 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙮𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨.” Thank you to Visa for creating a challenge that encouraged technical creativity, thoughtful product design, and real-world problem-solving.
