Biography
- Father: Calvin Robert Tubb; mother: Sarah Ellen Baker
- Youngest of 5 children in a sharecropper's family
- Dropped out of school after one year of high school
- Worked for the WPA (New Deal jobs program) during the lean times before his music career took off
- Worked in various Texas cities (including Corpus Christi, Midland) in the late 1930s, at radio stations and whatever else he could find. (Residence San Angelo at the 1940 Census, 1935 in San Antonio)
- Referred to as "The Texas Troubadour"
- Inducted into the Site/inductee?entry_id=2953 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1970)
- Inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1965
