Hugo Gernsback was a Luxembourgish–American inventor, writer, editor, and magazine publisher, best known for publications including the first science fiction magazine. In his honor, annual awards presented at the World Science Fiction Convention are named the "Hugos".[1]

Hugo Gernsback was born on 16 Aug 1884 in Luxembourg.[2][3]

He emigrated to the United States of America in 1904.[2]

Hugo Gernsback married Rose Harvey on 6 Aug 1906 in Manhattan, New York.[4]

In the 1910 US census, Hugo Gernsback (age 25, born Germany) was living in Manhattan, New York, United States, with wife Rose Gernsback (25) and daughter Madelon (0). He was working as an electrician.[2]

In the 1920 US census, Hugo Gernback (age 35, born Alsace Lorraine) was living in Manhattan, New York. He was a merchant publisher.[5]

In the 1930 US census, Hgo Bernsback (age 46, born Luxembourg) and wife Dorothy Gernsback (29) were living in Manhattan, New York, with daughter Bertina Gernsback (2), nurse Erna Toedt (31) and maid Anna Riborsky (32).[6]

The Hugo Awards or "Hugos" are the annual achievement awards presented at the World Science Fiction Convention, selected in a process that ends with vote by current Convention members. They originated and acquired the "Hugo" nickname during the 1950s and were formally defined as a convention responsibility under the name "Science Fiction Achievement Awards" early in the 1960s. The nickname soon became almost universal and its use legally protected; "Hugo Award(s)" replaced the longer name in all official uses after the 1991 cycle.

In 1960 Gernsback received a special Hugo Award as "The Father of Magazine Science Fiction".

Hugo Gernsback died in Aug 1967 in New York, United States.[7]
