A Historic Achievement for Bulgaria: INSAIT Wins the Country’s First ERC Grant in Engineering and Natural Sciences
Bulgaria’s first-ever ERC grant in Natural Sciences and Engineeringhas been awarded to Dr. Bernhard Haeupler, a researcher at INSAIT, an institute of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The grant, worth €2.5 million, is among the most prestigious in the world and is awarded for excellent, curiosity-driven, frontier research projects led by outstanding researchers, with the goal of advancing fundamental knowledge and enabling breakthrough discoveries. This exceptional achievement comes after 171 unsuccessful prior applications from Bulgarian institutions in these scientific fields over the past nearly 20 years.

INSAIT Develops AI System for Predicting Wildfire Risk Across Europe
A system developed by INSAIT uses artificial intelligence to predict wildfire risk across Europe, providing governments with data for prevention and human-understandable explanations. FireScope AI is the first system of its kind and has been developed by the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. 
INSAIT surpasses University of Cambridge, Princeton University, and Yale University in number of accepted papers at CVPR 2026, ranking 1st in Eastern Europe
The Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University ranks 1st in Eastern Europe and 4th in EU by number of accepted papers at the world’s most prestigious conference in computer vision and AI. The Bulgarian research institute has 17 accepted papers at CVPR 2026, one of the most significant events in the field of AI globally. |
