How do I get to your Markfield natural burial site?

Markfield natural burial site is located on the left side of Markfield Lane as it heads south west towards the village of Thornton. You’ll see it soon after passing South Charnwood High School. The postcode is LE67 9TB.

Is there parking on site at the Markfield natural burial site?

Yes, parking is available for approximately 50 cars.

Are there toilet facilities on site?

Toilets are provided at our Markfield site during organised services and events. We currently do not have toilet facilities at our Oxton and Ketton sites; however, we are in the process of introducing facilities at these locations.

Are pets allowed on site?

Well-behaved pets are always welcome on site, but we do ask that you keep them on a lead and be sure to clean up after them if necessary.

Are Tithe Green’s natural burial sites open to the public?

Yes they are, and visitors are welcome anytime, any day of the week, with no appointment necessary.

Is there an indoor space to hold a service or wake at Tithe Green Natural Burial Markfield?

We are currently in the process of creating a small service building at our Markfield site. Mirroring our service building on our Oxton site, The Keep, as it is known, will blend into the landscape of the main meadow. It will be available to hire for services before or after a burial or interment, as well as a place for our local community to gather.

What footwear do you recommend when visiting Tithe Green Natural Burial?

When it’s dry, you should be okay wearing just about any kind of footwear – although you might need to take extra care if you’re in heels! However, the paths can get wet and muddy after rain, and anywhere off the main paths can get muddy over winter, so you might need to consider bringing spare footwear during these times.

Are Tithe Green’s natural burial sites wheelchair accessible?

All our sites are accessible for wheelchairs. However, please be aware that after periods of heavy rain, the paths can still be quite wet. If in doubt, please call us and we’ll be happy to help.

Our settings

At our Midlands sites, you can choose from either a woodland or wildflower meadow setting. Our site in County Durham is an established woodland. Wildflower meadow burials take place all year round. Woodland burials are also year-round, except for tree planting and burial of ashes at our Midlands sites, which take place between November and February.

Woodland

Woodland burials involve entwining legacy with nature through planting a tree (at our Midlands sites) or choosing an established tree (at our Blue House sites) as a lasting memorial. Our woodlands, whether growing or established, are peaceful places to visit, and it’s lovely seeing the trees inch taller over time. Adjacent plots aren’t possible here due to growing and changing tree roots.

Wildflower Meadow

Wildflower meadows are home to vital insects and other pollinators like butterflies and our increasingly endangered bees. We place plaques instead of trees in these colourful, changing spaces. Adjacent plots are possible here. Please note we are unable to offer meadow burial or interment at our site in County Durham.

Natural burial
(from £1,975)

This means burying a person in a biodegradable coffin using only natural materials, either within woodland (a tree and plaque are planted alongside) or a wildflower meadow (a plaque is placed).

Natural interment of ashes
(from £875)

This means burying ashes in the ground in a biodegradable container. As with our main natural burial approach, at our Midlands sites this can be within woodland (with a tree and plaque) or a wildflower meadow (plaque). At our County Durham site, ashes are interred beneath established trees in our woodland (with a plaque).

Direct cremation + natural interment of ashes

This means enlisting us to arrange an unattended, direct cremation and burial of ashes in the ground in a biodegradable container. As with all approaches, burial of ashes can be attended or unattended.

This means planting a tree in someone’s memory without a burial taking place. This too can be attended or unattended. All trees are accompanied by a welsh slate plaque with a bespoke inscription.

What to expect when visiting Tithe Green Markfield

Once you’ve parked up, you can head straight into the site and start exploring what it has to offer. Even if you’re not there for a burial or interment, it’s a fantastic place to walk and spend time, and we have regular visitors who come for no other reason than to enjoy its beauty and peacefulness. There’s plenty of space for visitors and dogs on leads to explore – take a look at the large new wildflower meadow that has recently been sown and the adjoining woodland space.

During dry periods, getting around the site should be easy, especially if you stay on the paths. However, you need to take a bit more care over winter or after significant rain, because it can get muddy. If you’re not sure and you don’t want to get your shoes dirty, it might be a good idea to bring something sturdy and/or waterproof.

Whatever the weather, Markfield is a great place for spotting wildlife, like birds, insects and small mammals. We’re also home to a wide variety of native trees, and our wildflower meadows are something to behold when they’re in full bloom!
