We’re two data journalists who investigated the data mining algorithm that decides which French households get audited for benefit fraud. AMA about the use of algorithms in public services and discrimination.

I'm a French business school professor and an expert in crime economics. For two years, I conducted an investigation into Mexico's secret fentanyl labs. AMA about the violent and ultra-profitable business of manufacturing, selling, and exporting fentanyl worldwide.

EDIT: That’s all the time we have for our AMA! Thank you to everyone for submitting such great questions, Bertrand Monnet was glad to see you had so many interesting questions and is sorry for not being able to get to them all. -Bertrand Monnet and Le Monde in English

Hello everyone! My name is Bertrand Monnet, and I’m a professor at EDHEC Business School in France and a specialist in the economics of crime. I conducted a two-year investigation inside the notorious Mexican Sinaloa drug cartel, filming every stage of the extraordinarily profitable and illegal business of manufacturing and selling fentanyl: a drug that kills, but earns the people who produce it billions of dollars. I also interviewed the people behind and affected by this business, including members of the Sinaloa cartel, their financial advisors in Dubai, and drug users in New York. After wreaking havoc in the United States, the international criminal operation is now targeting a new market: France.

My investigation in collaboration with France’s leading newspaper Le Monde has been turned into ‘Narco Business’, a three-part video series investigating the Sinaloa drug cartel. You can watch it here:

Hello everyone! My name is Gilles Paris, and I’m a politics columnist for France’s leading newspaper Le Monde, now available in English!

Last Tuesday, the French government announced a highly anticipated and contentious pension reform aimed at raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030. People will also need to have worked for at least 43 years to get a full pension starting from 2027. The reform was a long-time promise of President Emmanuel Macron and a cornerstone of his 2022 reelection campaign. The plan has provoked vigorous criticism and France’s largest labor unions have called for a first day of joint strikes and protests on January 19.

I have covered French politics at Le Monde for six years, and I’m fond of polls and think tank reports. I also covered France’s last presidential election in 2022, when the proposal to push up the retirement age to 65 years old was initially mentioned.

AMA about France’s new pension reform, the reactions from politicians, the public and unions, and the planned strikes.

I'm the head of video at France’s leading newspaper Le Monde. Our team recreated Charles De Gaulle's lost 1940 recording for France to resist the Nazis using historical sources and artificial intelligence. AMA about our investigation.

EDIT: Hi guys! Thanks for your interesting questions and kind comments about our work. It's the weekend here in France now, but we'll keep an eye out for any more questions that trickle in and respond early next week. Hope everyone has a good weekend too and talk to you soon!

Hello Reddit! My name is Charles-Henry Groult, and I lead the video investigations team at Le Monde, France’s leading newspaper, now also available in English.

On June 18, 1940, Charles de Gaulle gave one of the greatest speeches in French history from a BBC studio in London, where he called for the French to resist Nazi occupation. But no film or recording exists of it. With the help of historians, researchers in ethics, and artificial intelligence, our team pieced together de Gaulle’s famous appeal of June 18, 1940 and reconstructed it in his voice. You can watch the video here.
I have directed Le Monde’s video department for three years, supervising high-impact visual investigations on subjects from Uyghur internment camps to Wagner mercenaries in Africa. Before joining Le Monde, I produced award-winning short documentaries about past and current wars for European media like Arte and France Télévisions. I discovered the fascinating story of De Gaulle’s lost speech ten years ago, while doing my post-graduate degree at Cardiff University. It then took me more than ten years to crack the code to telling this story.

AMA about our video investigation!
