I. WTF is this shit?

Final Fantasy fans is loves it dramatic villains, so much so that they tend to overshadow dominate all discussion leaving many aspects of the game otherwise forgotten, which is unfortunate. Especially considering that almost universally, Final Fantasy games starts their story pitting a couple of downtrodden, inappropriately dressed young adults against a large overarching authority, which like all authorities spend all their resources oppressing people, committing genocide, and kicking puppies. These said authorities and institutions are dynamic in Final Fantasy, ranging from complex organizations to simple megalomaniac kingdoms.

They embody all the things that are truly wrong with society. Sure, Kefka is a crazed personification of ultimate evil, but how many Kefkas do we see in the world today? It’s the greed, the corruption, and the moral bankruptcy of authority that seems to perpetuate our news. Global destruction for the lulz is one thing, but it is the wars, oppression, environmental destruction, and exploitation that we as a player can connect with.

This wall of text is, as you guessed it, about the authorities and institutions that the player struggles with throughout the game. This is less an essay that it is a stream of consciousness opinions about the make up and themes of these establishment. It’s also fairly limited as it will only encompass games from VI and later, and many of these looks are not as thorough as I would like because it has been years since I played them. The organizations that are presented here are the Gestahl Empire from FFVI, Shinra Electric Company from FFVII, Galbadia from FFVIII, Alexandria AND Terra from FFIX, Yevon from FFX, Archadia from FFXII, and the Sanctum from FFXIII. It would be very easy to slip in discussion about the leaders that control these organizations (Rufus Shinra, Vayne Solidor, etc) and they are important to understand why these organizations do what they do. But I would run the risk into slipping into lengthy debates on just the nature of these figureheads so I will avoid this part of the discussion.

It goes without saying that, yes, there will be spoilers for FFVI through XIII…

I finished XIII awhile ago but never got around to saying anything about it. It could be that I’m easily entertained but I really had fun playing it. Maybe I’ve been conditioned to tunnels through playing Gears or something, but the linearity was never an issue for me. I had my share of problems, and there was a lot of them, but the overall experience was enjoyable.

Anyway, I finally got to play FFVII: Crisis Core, (I never play games unless they’ve been out for a year or two, apparently.) This game, even for its horrible antagonist and annoying DMW gameplay, had brilliantly executed scenes. I felt they couldn’t do any better for a prequel.

Most importantly turned me into a horrible OTP troll for ZackxAerith, which coincidently fits nicely with my CloudTifa.



I had never really considered ZxA before, I thought it was some stupid ploy that CxT fans pushed so that their pairing was ~*~*~more canon<3~*~*~ It‘s one of the more annoying trends in fandom, I find it ridiculous that that every female needs to be paired with someone and that people are willing to throw to people together just to make it justify a different relationship. But Crisis Core showed me that ZxA was every bit of real and moving as any of the relationships of FFVII.

However I was more reluctant to get into any pairing fandom again after dealing with all the pairing drama on Narutofan. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a friends with a lot of pairing fans, any of them are on my lj list. But there are just a lot of things that made me seriously dislike the workings inside them.

General disclaimer: This is my thoughts about pairing fandoms trends I found while on NF forums, not the people. There are plenty of pairing fandom members and fandom leaders that I’m friends with. And for goodness sake, these are my thoughts and my thoughts alone, not anyone else’s. It's stupid I have to write this.

In short:

Pairing fandoms are scary. Pairing fandoms leaders are powerful.

Powerful and scary combination killed any desire for me to go back into pairing fandom.

I'd put Bleach under spoiler cuts as well, but it's still the long string of repetitive and endless fight sequences with minimal plot value and large blank spaces to cover most of the panel space. The same as it's been last month. And last last month. And the month before that, and probably the month after this one was well.

My renewed interest in livejournal is probably brought about because I have finals coming up and I need something to help me be unproductive. You are all enablers, I hope you feel bad about yourselves, you addicting beautiful bastards.
