Over 75% of globally significant crops depend on animal pollination. 🐝 Yet pollinators face increasing threats from habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. At UNEP-WCMC, we are working to reverse this trend and bridge the science-policy gap. Our initiatives focus on two critical pillars: 🔸 Understanding the economic value of pollinators Through project VALOR, we are mapping the flow of pollination benefits across sectors and co-developing accessible methods, tools, databases and models. Resources from this project will help financial institutions, businesses and policymakers take actions that benefit pollinators. More about VALOR Project 🔗 https://valor-project.eu/ 🔸 Transitioning agricultural practices and their policy contexts Many sectors rely on and affect pollinators. Policy coherence and positive shifts in agricultural practices can reduce pressures on biodiversity and restore essential ecosystem services that pollinators rely on. Through the AGRI4POL project, experts at UNEP-WCMC are engaging policymakers and practitioners for pollinator stewardship. Learn more about AGRI4POL Project 🔗 https://agri4pol.eu/ By unlocking the value of nature, we can ensure a resilient future for all. 🌿 #WorldBeeDay #pollinators #biodiversity

“Unlike emissions, there is no single metric of impact on nature” 🌳 Following last year’s COP30 in Brazil, a global group of nature and sustainable business organizations proposed the development of a Nature Measurement Protocol. However, building this framework requires a delicate balance of capturing local ecological complexity while meeting the private sector’s needs for clear guidance. In a new Reuters feature, UNEP-WCMC’s Head of Nature Economy, Sharon Brooks and Senior Programme Officer, Jacob Bedford, explore how this standard can be developed for companies to measure their nature impacts. To successfully build a Nature Measurement Protocol, they recommend: 🔸 Clear guidance: Providing a standardized framework for reporting 🔸 Strategic flexibility: Allowing adaptation for different business decisions and unique ecosystem types 🔸 Social inclusion: Acknowledging and respecting people’s relationships with the land #NatureAction #Biodiversity

From clean water for manufacturing to pollination for coffee production, natural capital is the foundation of every global value chain. Every industry relies on natural capital for long-term resilience. But there remains a significant gap in recognizing these dependencies and the impacts their businesses have on nature. The ENCORE tool is designed to bridge this gap and help businesses, investors, and regulators better understand their exposure to nature-related risks. The tool provides a structured, data-driven starting point to help: 🔸 Screen sector-specific dependencies on nature 🔸 Map potential pressures of your operations on ecosystems 🔸 Align with the TNFD framework and other initiatives Join over 16K users who are already exploring their nature-related risks. Watch this video: https://lnkd.in/eaXGGAtY Visit the ENCORE website and explore 👉 https://lnkd.in/dBNZtMPb This video was developed with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development in collaboration with the ENCORE Partners (Global Canopy, United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and UNEP-WCMC) under the Horizon Europe SUSTAIN project.

“Let’s look at the science of our times, rather than the politics of the day.” We just wrapped two days of insightful and inspiring discussions at the Nature Action Dialogues, and the message is clear: “Every job is a nature job” 🌿 Ambition alone will not deliver outcomes for people and the planet. What is needed now is hard work to deliver on these commitments. We would like to thank all the attendees, speakers and session leads, for advancing crucial conversations on how to put nature at the heart of decision-making across industries! We will return in 2027 and look forward to welcoming familiar as well as new attendees! We commenced Day 2 of the Nature Action Dialogues with an immersive nature walk through the grounds of Jesus College. 🌳🌿 Led by WCMC CEO Jonathan Hughes , we stepped out of session rooms and into the natural landscapes. From identifying native UK tree species and diverse mosses to discussing the critical state of local biodiversity, the tour was a powerful reminder of what is at stake. We even put citizen science into practice by using digital tools to identify and map the nature around us. 📲 A refreshing start to another day! #NatureActionDialogues #citizenscience Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) | United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) | Jesus College Cambridge

"The finance sector can be a leading catalyst of change" - Neville Ash commenced the finance-focused opening plenary at the #NatureActionDialogues 🌿 , emphasising the need for more to be done. Joining us to deliver the opening keynote, Dame Amelia Fawcett DBE, CVO, co-chair, International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits quoted, "There is no thriving economy without a thriving planet," urging for more collaboration and co-creating solutions. The keynote was followed by an expert panel with senior leaders Khadija Ali, Ingrid Kukuljan, Andrew Mitchell, moderated by Romie Goedicke den Hertog from United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), who delved into how financial behaviour can shape positive outcomes for nature. #NatureActionDialogues #SustainableFinance #biodiversity

“Rebuilding trust and transforming business practice for nature and people” 🌿 At the #NatureActionDialogues' business plenary, UNEP-WCMC's Matt Jones took the room through the findings of the latest IPBES Business and Biodiversity assessment, emphasising on how "every single business in the world impacts and depends on biodiversity. And businesses have the potential to be agents of positive change." Following the IPBES #BizBiodiversity insights, an expert panel with Elisa Aragon, Charmian (Char) Love and Ian Hudson, explored how businesses can structure credible actions that support delivery of global goals for nature and people. The panellists emphasised on recognising the linkages between people and nature to strengthen business interactions with local communities and stakeholders. Key insights from the panel discussion: 🔸 When relationships become too transactional and not too relational, that can impact trust. 🔸 Before we talk about trust, we need to talk about why there is no trust. 🔸 Keep revisiting the cycle of trust on a continuous basis. #NatureActionDialogues #SustainableFinance #biodiversity

Positive outcomes await the world’s long-distance voyagers! 🐦🪽 From the high Arctic to the tip of South America, migratory birds connect our world. But some species need international protections to continue flying. In our latest blog, UNEP-WCMC experts dive into the stories of four incredible migratory bird species that recently gained critical new protections under the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). We are putting the spotlight on: 🔸 Barau’s petrel - Iconic Indian Ocean seabird 🔸 Hudsonian godwit - An epic long-distance voyager 🔸 Ibera seedeater - An enigmatic finch-like songbird 🔸 Snowy owl - A nomadic Arctic icon We will continue to work closely with Parties and the Convention on Migratory Species to put these new frameworks into practice. We will support tracking and driving the urgent actions now needed to save the world’s migratory animals.
