Diverse Teams Outperform

About us

Launched in 1978 as the Commonwealth’s strategic venture capital team, MassVentures provides catalytic funding and support for seed-stage deep tech enabled by university and hospital research centers. We are a vital, comprehensive resource for entrepreneurs offering investment, non-dilutive grants, technical support and business guidance. MassVentures is a venture development firm at its core with an emphasis on academic spinouts. We seek to identify ideas at the very earliest prototype stage and help convert those ideas into thriving businesses and jobs to support the economic growth initiatives of the Commonwealth. By providing not only financial resources but also strategic direction, operational support, and access to a network of experts, MassVentures gives companies a greater chance of success. We establish long-term relationships with founders, aiding them on their journey from startup to growth company. “Diverse Teams Outperform®” is our investment thesis, and we are intentional about supporting founders with diverse backgrounds or from diverse geographies in the state.   Visit our website to learn more about our programs and impact.

  • MA universities, research institutions and companies: If you're developing biotechnology and biomanufacturing technologies, review the list of 10 topics and attend Proposer's Day on June 30th.

Ruggedized biosensors can detect chemical threats in the field. Engineered fungi can be used for electronics shielding. The same for bio-derived pigments for camouflage. Smart packaging can extend military ration shelf life in tough conditions, too.  These are some of the 10 development topics at the center of #BioNexus – NEMC's new grant program in partnership with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM). Up to $3M in funding is available to MA-based institutions working in any of these areas. Proposer's Day is Tuesday, June 30 – the essential next step in writing a high-quality application. One of the most exciting aspects of the PharmStars accelerator is our culminating Startup Showcase, where our startups pitch to and meet privately with our pharma members.   Each cohort of 10 digital health startups from around the world, educated through the #PharmaU curriculum, develops a deep understanding of pharma’s needs. With the benefit of tremendous, personalized mentoring, they refine and perfect their pitches and then present their polished pharma-specific value propositions at the Startup Showcase.✨    Our Startup Showcases are not just “pitch opportunities” — they’re where connections are made and deals start. At a typical Startup Showcase, 50-70 impactful, private one-on-one meetings 🤝 take place between #startups and PharmStars’ pharma members, creating pathways for collaboration and innovation.  Curious about the experience? 🤔 Watch this short video for a glimpse into our Startup Showcase. 🎥    If your #startup 🚀 is seeking to engage #pharma as clients, apply now to be part of our Fall #accelerator program focused on “Digital Innovations in Immunology.”💡    Hurry to secure your chance to pitch and meet pharma companies that are eager for #digitalinnovation. • Exciting to see this kind of hands-on support for early-stage translational researchers. Academic spinouts are an important engine in the innovation economy. Getting groundbreaking technologies out of the lab and into the market is a critical part of the MassVentures' mission. For 48 years we've been transferring research and early-stage innovations to viable businesses and jobs in the Commonwealth. We're grateful for the researchers, programs, and ecosystem partners that help make this possible.

Following the Milestones Workshop, the 2026 Translational Seed Award applicants attended a Pitching Workshop facilitated by Karen Utgoff, Paul-Miki (Ralu) Ibekwe, and Julian Lustig-Gonzalez, which focused on helping them craft and deliver effective 30 second research pitches in preparation for their required video submissions. The session centered on audience-dependent storytelling, creating the perfect hook, message clarity, and communicating translational impact in a concise format. After a brief review of pre-work materials, participants engaged in an interactive working session to shape and practice their pitches. Through real-time feedback from facilitators and fellow applicants, attendees refined their narratives and strengthened their delivery. This event was presented by the U.S. NSF UMass Amherst Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program and IALS Venture Development, with continued support from the IALS Business Innovation Fellows Stephanie "Steffi" Keough (Platzer), Henry Fagbenro, and Leslie Owusu Ansah.

  • Founders School Company Spotlight: Neurapsyc Founded by Pranay Srivastava, Ph.D., Neurapsyc is a Greater Boston, Massachusetts-based company building a wearable home rehabilitation platform for stroke survivors. Drawing on a background in neuroscience and a deep commitment to improving recovery after stroke, Pranay founded Neurapsyc after recognizing that many stroke survivors struggle with uneven walking patterns that existing tools often fail to address, typically requiring ongoing clinical supervision. Neurapsyc's mission is to bring effective, guided rehabilitation directly into patients' homes — closing a gap that becomes more urgent as healthcare systems shift toward home-based care and measurable outcomes. 🔹 The Technology Neurapsyc's platform uses wearable sensors on each leg to deliver personalized cues that guide the weaker leg toward correction during everyday walking at home, with a clinician dashboard providing real-time visibility between visits. To date, the company has: - built a defensible intellectual property position around its core technology, - established an advisory network spanning leading research institutions, - and designed a feasibility study with infrastructure in place to begin clinical validation. 🔹 Recent Milestones Neurapsyc received a non-dilutive accelerator grant, is preparing a full NSF grant application following a competitive review, and was a finalist in Tufts CTSI's Innovate2Impact competition, a semifinalist in the Tufts New Ventures Competition, and a finalist in the MedTech Ahead Startup Program, presenting at Smith & Nephew. 🔹 What's Next Neurapsyc is completing its integrated functional demonstrator, launching its feasibility study, and exploring ways to support clinical validation and FDA pre-submission readiness. "Founders School has given me invaluable perspective on how to position Neurapsyc for funding and partnerships, and connected me with a network of mentors who understand the path from research to a market-ready medical device."  - Pranay Srivastava, Ph.D. The company has made tremendous progress since first engaging with MassVentures' Founders School. We're proud to support their entrepreneurial journey and excited for the next chapter. 🔗 Are you a deep tech founder seeking to refine your business model, prepare for competitive accelerator programs, and jump-start your business in Massachusetts?
