QUESTIONS WITH ANCAP CEO, Carla Hoorweg 🎤 Q: Last year we saw the seat rail of the MG 3 fail in crash testing. What is ANCAP doing in response? A: This is exactly why independent crash testing matters. During ANCAP testing, an issue was identified with the MG 3 seat rail. As a result, MG made changes to the vehicle to rectify the issue. Without independent testing, issues like this may never be identified, which is why ANCAP continues to test and assess vehicles to help improve safety outcomes for everyone on the road. If you’ve noticed that some new cars have even the most basic driver controls now buried with touchscreens and sub-menus, you’re not alone.  It’s time to bring back buttons and stalks and remove some of the complication (and distraction!). We’re now asking car makers to either offer physical buttons for important driver controls like the horn, windscreen wipers, indicators, hazard lights and headlights, or dedicate a fixed portion of the cabin display screen to these primary driving functions. ASK OUR SAFETY EXPERTS 🎤 Q: Is a five-star ANCAP safety rating from a few years ago the same as a five-star rating today? A: Not quite. Every vehicle rated by ANCAP has a star rating, with the tested year listed alongside it. So when comparing vehicles, first check that they have a five-star ANCAP safety rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, then look at the year they were tested. Where possible, choose a model with the most recent tested year, as it will have been assessed against a broader range of safety criteria. Helping fleets choose safer vehicles 🚙 Around half of all new vehicles sold in Australia are purchased by businesses, making fleet safety a critical part of improving road safety. This week, ANCAP's Policy Director, John Ryan, spoke at two Australasian Fleet Management Association (AFMA) Professional Development events in Canberra and Melbourne, highlighting how ANCAP safety ratings help fleet managers make informed purchasing decisions. Attendees received an overview of the new 2026-2028 Stages of Safety assessment criteria, with high interest in our expansion to the testing and rating of light trucks, commercial vans, American-style utes and heavy goods vehicles.  A big thank you to Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA) for the opportunity to engage directly with fleet professionals committed to putting safer vehicles on our roads.
