- Mack C. Chase made a fortune in the Permian Basin oilfields in Texas and New Mexico.
- The oil and natural gas tycoon started out working on wells with his father and brother before striking out on his own in 1968.
- He and John Gray partnered in 1979 to start Marbob Energy (named after their wives), offering pumping services to well owners in southeast New Mexico.
- When Chase and Gray split, Chase invested in a new firm called Mack Energy Corp., and Gray kept the Marbob name.
