Class 9 Textbook Describes Judiciary As Impartial
New Class 9 Social Science textbooks released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training describe the Indian judiciary as an impartial and independent institution that protects citizens’ rights and upholds the Constitution.
The reference appears in the new textbook Understanding Society: India and Beyond, under a section on separation of powers. The section explains the role of the judiciary in a democracy and its responsibility to review government action, interpret laws and protect constitutional values.
According to current reports, the textbook says the judiciary can review executive actions and strike down laws that are found to be unconstitutional. It also refers to public interest litigation as one of the ways through which citizens can seek access to justice.
The description comes as part of wider changes in NCERT’s Class 9 Social Science content. Textbook revisions are closely followed because they influence how students understand democratic institutions, constitutional structures and the functioning of government.
For students, the updated section introduces the judiciary as one of the key pillars in India’s democratic system. It places emphasis on institutional independence, citizens’ rights and the relationship between the Constitution and the rule of law.
The new textbook also explains separation of powers as a principle that divides responsibilities among different branches of government. This is meant to help students understand why democratic systems rely on checks and balances.
Curriculum changes in social science subjects often attract wider public attention because they shape classroom discussions on history, civics and public institutions. In this case, the focus is on how the role of the judiciary is being presented to Class 9 students.
The textbook update is expected to be used in the ongoing academic cycle as new NCERT materials are introduced in schools.
