I’m Supposed to Make a Difference: A Memoir About Overcoming Trauma and Abuse

3.8 out of 5 stars (189)

This is what happens when true crime hits close to home.

Kevin’s mother was emotionally abusive and resented him, though she did her best to protect him and his brother from their father — a man who could be quite violent who may have inherited his own father’s evil, sadistic, pedophilic traits.

In the summer of 1980 Kevin found himself in the “care” of his paternal grandfather, on the same day the man abducted an 11-year-old girl with the sole intention of raping her.

Kevin tried to stop him, and nearly died for getting in the way.

And she wasn’t the only little girl.

I’m Supposed to Make a Difference describes how Kevin fought a grueling, decades-long battle against long-buried memories to overcome suicidal feelings, depression, and self-loathing to develop five principles for moving forward and normalizing trauma: be steadfast; be goal-oriented; find good people; accept help; and focus your anger.

Today,
Kevin’s largely conquered his demons—and shares the strategies he used to heal and transform.

I’m Supposed to Make a Difference is a riveting, emotional and inspirational read for survivors of childhood trauma and those who appreciate the transformative power of the human experience.

"WOW!! Just WOW!!"

About the Author

Kevin Vought grew up in Penfield, NY, along the shores of Lake Ontario through the 1980's. He earned a B.S. degree, graduating magna cum laude, with a double major in physics and math. He went on to earn two M.S. degrees in nuclear and civil engineering. Throughout school, he was rigorously taught how to write and how to give effective public presentations to convey his scientific findings.
Today, Kevin runs a family business with his wife, Jill Vought. Kevin and Jill married in 1998 and are more in love today than ever before in their twenty-three-year relationship. They have two daughters, the youngest is fifteen years old and the oldest is seventeen. While it's somewhat rare with everyone's hectic schedules, they still enjoy sitting down together to play Monopoly or a different board game when time permits.
Kevin is an engineering geek at heart and enjoys watching an old episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation or any of the other Star Trek or Star Wars movies. He also enjoys the Discovery or Science channels. When he reads, it's usually educational material.
Kevin drinks way too much coffee -black dark roast is best! He loves ice cream, but his stomach only allows him so much of that these days.
He's come a long way in the last few years in taming his demons. It's allowed him to take some time to sit down and put his thoughts and experiences on paper. Through the process, he's recognized that
I'm Supposed to Make a Difference.

Overcoming a Childhood of Abuse and Trauma

This book is like no other I've ever read about childhood abuse. It really made me realize why my sibling's misdirected anger falls onto me, the only one in the family who is willing to talk about our past. One thing I'm still curious about is why the author doesn't dig up the spot he thinks may harbor a body of an abused child. I hope the author sees this and can answer that question. My prayers and best wishes go to Kevin, his family and every victim of childhood abuse and trauma. I salute your progress and the hard work you have done and still do to come to terms with all of it and move ahead to a successful and enjoyable life. Thank you for writing this book!

    So Sad

It's hard for me to only give this book a three star rating, however, there were a couple issues I couldn't get past. First, the story kept jumping timelines and was confusing me. I also found it hard to really connect to Kevin and that saddens me because no one should ever have to suffer what he did. I also agree with other reviews that it reads more like a self help book. I applaud the bravery of the author for sharing his story and wish him all the happiness and joy in the world.

It is hard for me to realize a childhood like the author had. I had Christian parents, and I accepted Christ myself as a teenager. With the Bible , my faith, and Jesus to lead me, my life is beautiful. I wish all these people in the memoir had Christ in their hearts. He is all you need. I’m so thankful I never experienced all the trauma the author did, but I’m glad that he is leading a great life now, with a wonderful family.

I very much enjoyed reading about the author’s journey with the trauma from abuse he suffered. It was very well written and he articulated things very well. I appreciated how he encouraged people who are dealing with trauma to get help and gave direction as to how to do that. He seems very blessed to have a wife who is very supportive and helpful with his journey. The only thing that confused me throughout the book is how he called his mother his hero but then would explain how she emotionally abused him profusely throughout his life. Other than that I believe this book would be very helpful and definitely make a difference in many peoples lives.

This book is not only a recount of childhood abuse, it is a must read for abuse survivors and how to move forward into being productive and successful adults. This book is suitable for mid to older teenage audiences as well as those professions who work with abuse and PTSD clients. Kevin's story is truly inspirational and a happy ending to a sad upbringing.

Repetitive in his writing although forgivable as this was author's first book. Good advice here for someone who has gone thru unbelievable childhood trauma.
