Far Future Space Mafia Romance and Intrigue
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2022One of the golden elements of this series is the versatility of settings and situations the characters face in far future space. In this case, there is a tension-wrought mafia-style sci-fi romance with enough twists and turns to keep the reader flipping pages right from beginning to end.
Danger in the Stars is the tenth entry in the series, but can be read standalone. It has a strong connection with the earlier shorter piece (#8.1) Star Cruise: Stowaway which readers of that one will appreciate the tie-in, but a newbie won’t feel like they’re missing anything by jumping right into this one.
Danger in the Stars takes the reader into a criminal organization with the futuristic sci-fi touches to remind one this is set in The Sectors. Introducing a non-human heroine with psychic talent, but a slave-captive of the organization and a hero who is the second in command and enforcer- body guard of the boss lady.
The danger for the heroine and feeling of despair in the heroine for her situation quickly drew me in and this became a one-sitting read because I couldn’t put it down. Miriell can see people’s auras thus she can read their feelings and motivations and can manipulate them by connecting to their auras. She was a priestess on her more primitive world until some alien’s attacked and enslaved many from her race. Now, she and a group of others from her world were sold to this crime syndicate and her sister and friends are held hostage to make Miriell the strongest psychic of them all, cooperate.
This time, her handler takes her to a leader within the organization who has paid for her talents and she encounters a man who actually sees her as a person and doesn’t stand for her to be abused by her handler even though he will not let her escape when he catches her trying. Despite her talent, Miriell can’t get a read on Conor Stewart and can’t figure out whether he is cold and cruel like the rest and just playing games with her or if something else is in play. There comes a moment when she must make a decision and hope she placed her trust correctly.
Danger in the Stars had wonderful character and good relationship development even as it kept up the suspense and good action sequences right to the end. Many who have followed my reviews of the series know that if I had one complaint, it is some of the abrupt endings. But, this one hit the climax point and had a fabulous denouement and epilogue. I was utterly satisfied, therefore, from cover to cover. Sci-fi Romance lovers really need to consider this series ‘must-reads’.

Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2017There’s an excellent reason why Veronica Scott is a Best Seller and a Multiple times Award Winner. She is reliably a great buy.
I just finished her latest book. Danger in the Stars, is absolutely fabulous!
It begins with a powerful telepathic slave from a human'ish' species being brought to this planet to use her talents on a reluctant potential business partner. The first chance Miriell has to escape, she goes for it. Unfortunately, Conor is #2 in Lady Opherra growing crime syndicate and he has to bring the young woman back. Unlike her handler, Conor is firm but gentle and kind, but he cannot allow her to run off. She is here because the big boss thinks she can help Lady Opherra achieve her objective. The Lady Opherra does not believe she needs any assistance and grows to hate Mirielle.
Miriell hates the planet because it has few trees, but lots of buildings. She relies on the essence of nature to heal and strengthen her, so she is weakened by this planet. Fortunately, Conor takes her to various gardens while on the planet. The last one being the most critical. (You’ll have to read the book to find out why.)
While Miriell does not trust easily and despite that Canon is Lady Opherra’s right hand guy, Miriell grows to trust him, and they develop a love that nothing can break, even though they must keep it a secret for most of the book.
The first half is mostly establishing the characters, their loves and hates, plus Lady Opherra’s constant deceit and viciousness. The second half is full-on action and betrayals, then we are rewarded with a fabulous HEA. I couldn’t ask for more!

A Reading the Paranormal Review
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2018A do love a good sci-fi romance with danger, high stakes, and love found in unexpected places. In this case, the high stakes are Miriell and Conor's lives, the danger is EVERYWHERE, and the love is smokin'.
Miriell is one of the psychics stolen from her planet and held captive by the deadly group known as the Amarotu Combine. Forced to do terrible things with her power, the only thing that keeps her going is the thought that one day she would have her revenge on her her captors. Since I'm ALL FOR brutal revenge against those who exploit others, I totally got where she was coming from.
On the surface, Conor looks like just another Combine lackey. He's in deep with the Combine and stands as second in command to a leader on her way up in the organization. BUT...all isn't as it seems and Conor and Miriell forge a connection. Which I approve of. Sexy connections in dangerous situations are excellent.
Very bad aliens, political maneuverings, and a priestess who can do unbelievable things when properly motivated. I love these Sectors SF men and women. They fight and love harder than most because they never know when the bad guys will try to take everything they care about away from them.

Riveting Action
Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2017Miriell is from a race with powers that can make a person do things they would never consider and that makes her a valuable pawn. She is a prisoner and forced to do things to keep her people safe. This time when she arrives she feel a connection and it is to someone who should not make her feel safe. Conor is the second in command to the boss but does not always act as he should. The action here is riveting and the characters up to carrying and keeping the story moving. If you think that you have met Miriell and her people before your may be right. Her people were introduced in a novella that appeared in a SFR collection. A great story that tied up the loose ends that that novella left. I think the ending left wide open a new area for Scott to explore and place future stories in this series.

GR 3.4; Zon 3.9: Both leads likable, sympathetic; romance/sex a little fast-developed
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021The fact that Miriell can sense souls/auras reconciled me to her attraction to a man who appeared to be one of the bad guys, and who was helping keep her captive. He did manage to show some kindness and morals from the beginning. A few developments did seem slightly abrupt (I'm avoiding spoilers, though — other than the fact that it has a happy ending, something I consider a *requirement* for any tale marketed as a non-tragic romance!), and I personally could've done without Miriell enjoying the peek when his towel gapped, but that's just my idiosyncratic tastes. I do understand the psychology of adrenaline and of seizing life when it may end in a hurry.
Ms. Scott certainly knows how to write, and there were some gripping, suspenseful scenes. I like Miriell's Tulavarran abilities — not all immediately revealed — and the ethos of the bittersweet, desperate scene with the ancient tree. (I have to avoid mentally associating it with Lee & Miller's Jelaza Kazone, or it'd be upsetting.) It just felt a bit "less" than it could have been, in general, but that might be simply my restless mood. The involvement of the Shemdylann and eventually one of the Mawreg themselves certainly weren't boring.
There is a prolonged denouement, while Miriell and "Conor" are being separately questioned, more or less under "house (i.e., spaceship cabin) arrest", all from an impatient, worried Miriell's PoV, without the Conor-PoV scenes we were given at certain other stages. Of course, there's a cryptic Mellurean determining several critical factors at this point. Then we reach the hopeful, happy ending, as they agree on a new plan for their future.
Connects to the novella Star Cruise: Stowaway (which is still among my TBR), but stands on its own.

Great SF Romance
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2018Miriell, a powerful priestess on her home planet, was kidnapped along with quite a few of her people and sold to the leading organized crime organization, the Amarotu Combine. Whenever they want her cooperation to use her power to kill or manipulate people, they not only put a bomb device around her neck, but they hold her sister hostage as well. On one such assignment, she encounters Conor Stewart, who is not what he seems. Miriell can see for herself that he’s a good man underneath his tough exterior, and when danger threatens, she finds that she can count on him to protect her. With danger all around them, their romance is a ray of light in a very dark situation. I really enjoyed the book and now I need to read her sister Tyrelle’s story.

Another winner in the Sector Series
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2017I have read everything by this author and this may be one of my favorites of the Sector series. I think because the hero here was just so dark, mysterious and alpha like. Not that any of her heroes from previous Sector books were wimps, but this H is particularly cool. I love that the heroine is able to be a powerful force in her own right and not just always needing rescuing. There was a very nice, complete way the story was wrapped up which I appreciated as well.
This author continues to amaze me with her consistent quality with all of her books. I have never regretted buying one of her books which usually happens to me with an author by the 6th one, particularly when it's part of a series, but Ms. Scott's writing just keeps me glued to my Kindle.
