First Hunt (Bounty Hunter)

4.1 out of 5 stars (16)

"My name is Treya and I live in what used to be a small gentrified city in northwest Arkansas. Now it’s basically a FEMA concentration camp, although they don’t call it that. They still call it Bentonville." It's a good thing Treya is tenacious. With a job assignment to bring a criminal down to grub stage, which means three times hunted and twice killed, she'll need it. When she's paired with a serious, no-nonsense mentor with an acronym for a name, she finds herself in over her head. Being a bounty hunter for the Acquisitions, Retribution, & Silencing Agency in northwest Arkansas isn't exactly what she thought it'd be. On her training mission, Treya learns wilderness survival and how to use her paranormal tracking skills as she and DRSS bushwhack through the Buffalo River area in pursuit of a target. While on the hunt, Treya becomes privy to secrets that could get her killed. She has to decide who to trust - her mentor, or the government she despises. This is book one of the rural fantasy trilogy "Bounty Hunter" and is set in the near future after global collapse with the US under martial law.

Set in a near future, the existence that Americans currently enjoy is about to change.

After the collapse of the United States and the military law and NATO takeover, Treya watches, helpless as solders take her parents away. She is given a special card and told she should apply for a job with the government as a bounty hunter, but why would she want to work for the same government that took her parents? When her life falls apart more than it had, Treya has to make a choice to either work for the government or starve. In this decision, Treya learns much more about what she holds inside than she has ever imagined.

The character development and between Treya and her mentor is an ongoing process, one which will leave the reader speechless at times. Initially, the gruff individual seems to care for nothing but getting the job done, even to the effect of failing to actually teach Treya as they go along. Yet, after several events, the reader begins to see a completely different side of both characters.

The events that the author describes and the reality that the characters live in is not too far from what could be. The shift from a life of choices to one of regulated military guard is one that is often feared and discussed. The reader will not only be able to understand where the author is coming from, but also understand the decisions that each of the characters make.

I really like the flow of the story. While the story sets up for follow-up sequels, the reader is not left with a bad taste in their mouth from an abrupt ending. In fact, the ending almost has a smooth transition into wanting to continue the journey without feeling forced or compelled.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of First Hunt! This is a Science Fiction story that is not too far out from what could truly be!

I congratulate this author on a solid start to an exciting series. I look forward to reading more! This first book introduces us to two interesting characters living in a post-collapsed society; existence is dark and highly controlled but the main character retains her heart and spunk. Can't wait to find out what comes next!

What a weird story. This is the first book of the author that I've read, and I have to admit that it is probably the last as well. Just could not get comfortable with her writing style or the story, and the characters were very weird as well. Could not understand her descrs of what happened during the collapse, or really what the story is about.

I received First Hunt as a free copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I really enjoyed the plot in this dystopian-style story. The characters were somewhat unfinished, although we got a good look into Treya's head. A lot of questions remain after the first book, and the action isn't always believable, but I enjoyed the read anyway.

I started this book last night around bedtime intending to just read a chapter or two....annnd didn't wanna put it down! 😃 Read until I couldn't keep my eyes open. Finished it this morning. It's really good!! 👌😍 Starts right off with a BANG..and leaves you wondering what's going on and what will happens next. Set in the Ozarks, right where I live, the author paints beautiful pictures in your mind of all the places I know and love. ❤️ I'm impressed! A good read!
