Onetime working-class dog Rick Springfield has kept his nose to the grindstone since his early-80s "Jessie's Girl"/"General Hospital"/Tiger Beat-centerfold heyday. It seems as though he's realized he's making as big of a dent in the national consciousness as former co-stars Luke and Laura. Thus The Day After Yesterday, a disc of covers that, despite Springfield's raspy best efforts, communicates a certain last-ditch desperation. "I wanted to see if it would be easier and less painful doing a CD of songs I hadn't written ... and it was," Springfield writes in the album's liner notes. The trouble is, that ease devolved audibly into disillusionment: his song choices couldn't be less interesting and his delivery lacks soul, if not grit. Longtime fans, however, may want to soldier on. Springfield's reading of Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" may be snoozy, but the original wasn't exactly a thrill ride either. The same goes for Human League's pleasantly humdrum "Human." In a split second of boldness, Springfield closes the disc with a palatable, clear-eyed cover of "Imagine." It's a song about possibilities, and mixed with a healthy shot of inspiration, its message should serve the artist better next go-round. --Tammy La Gorce

About the Artist

The Day After Yesterday, being released on, July 12, 2005 (Gomer/DKE Records), is an album of 13 covers that have influenced Rick Springfield throughout his career, and one original song. "I've always wanted to record these songs" Rick Springfield says. "They have been favorites of mine for a long time. They are songs I wish I'd written. I wanted to be faithful to the originals but still treat them a little differently and also give them the benefit of the new technology. Plus, I wanted to see if it would be easier and less painful doing a CD of songs I hadn't written...and it was."

Tracks include I'm Not In Love (10cc), Under The Milky Way (The Church), Life In A Northern Town (Dream Academy), Broken Wings (Mister Mister), Human (Human League), Holding On To Yesterday (Ambrosia), Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty), Waiting For A Girl Like You (Foreigner), Let's Go Out Tonight (Blue Nile), For No One (Beatles), Miss You Nights (Westlife), Blue Rose (Lizz Wright), Cry (Rick Springfield) and Imagine (John Lennon)

On April 26, 2005, Sony/BMG released Written in Rock, Rick Springfield Anthology, a 2-Disc set, spanning Rick Springfield's entire career. "I consider these songs to be the highlights of my past albums and they definitively represent the different eras of my songwriting." - Rick Springfield.

Rick Springfield has withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined, writing and performing some of the best-crafted mainstream power pop of the past 20 years. A musician turned actor turned musician, Rick formed a band in high school, and eventually joined the group Rock House which toured Vietnam in 1968. A much sought after lead guitarist in his native Australia, he moved on from Rock House to join the popular band The Zoot in 1970. Springfield went solo after Zoot's breakup and garnered his first U.S. success the following year with a re-recording of his Australian hit "Speak to the Sky" (Capitol, 1972, #14).

After stints with both Columbia (1973) and Chelsea Records (1976), Rick was able to secure a recording contract with RCA on the strength of his demos; in the midst of recording his debut for the label, he was signed to play the young, eligible Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital in 1981. Springfield's popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for the release of Working Class Dog later that year. Powered by the classic chart topping single "Jessie's Girl," (RCA, 1981, # 1) and the Top Ten follow-up "I've Done Everything for You," (RCA, 1981, #8) Working Class Dog was a smash success, and Springfield eventually returned to his first love- music- when concerts conflicted with his television career.

The follow-up album, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet, was released in 1982, spawning the Top Five smash "Don't Talk to Strangers" (RCA, 1982, #2); 1983's Living in Oz offered more of the same, including the Top Ten "Affair of the Heart." (RCA, 1983, #9) as well as "Human Touch" (RCA, 1983, #18) When Springfield made the leap to the big screen in 1984 with Hard to Hold, the soundtrack had another Top Five hit, "Love Somebody." (RCA, 1984, #5) Hitting the Top 40 a total of 17 times, Rick has continued to record several more albums during his career, including Tao (1985), Rock Of Life (1988), Sahara Snow (1997, with Tim Pierce and Bob Marlette), Karma (1998) Greatest Hits Alive (2001)and the critically acclaimed Shock Denial Anger Acceptance (2004).

Was never a Rick Springfield fan, but heard a clip of an old favorite (UNDER THE MILKY WAY TONIGHT) on a car commercial, ordered this CD and expected a pop hits top 40 fluff album. To my total amazement this has now become one of the best CD's in my 450+ title collection. In short this a perfect portrait of a very talented singer from the 80's who created a single work that takes you on several musical journeys ranging from introspective lyric-rich Romantic to Air Guitarin Rock to Jazz-ish Blues. And this enthusiastic applause for 'Day After Yesterday' is coming from a die hard Doors, Led Zepplin and Guns & Roses fan! If you would like a softer experience, with 'seasoning' and with an 'edge' you will like this CD.

Rick Springfield takes songs HE likes, that he wishes he'd written, stays true to the original and adds his extra guitar touch to make them for "T'DAY". I like the cd - it grows on you more and more as you listen. These are clearly NOT Rick Springfield penned, type songs. I absolutely love Rick's own songs, but don't expect that styling in this CD. His raspy, throaty voice clearly works better for some songs than others. "Life in a Northern Town" is amazing; "Broken Wings" featuring Richard Page of the original great; "Baker Street" very well done, as is "Human". You gotta give someone credit to cover Beatles songs and Rick does quite well with "For No One" in particular. The main thing is for me, not specific choice of songs as I would have chosen, but perspective that these are songs this singer/songwriter admires and his interpretation of same. A definite buy it! I enjoyed this recording mainly for this reason. I can imagine Rick Springfield singing along to these tracks when they first came out on the Radio while driving his car shopping for comic books or to the recording studio. In any event. These are tunes that I was delighted to hear Rick record. Such as "Baker's Street" by the late Gerry Rafferty and 10cc's "I'm Not in Love". All the tracks here are a treat to listen to as performed by our young Rick Springfield of Guildford N.S.W. Australia.

    One for the diehards

I agree with the reviewer who says he buys every release Rick does... I am the same way, as are most diehard Rick fans. That said, just because I am a diehard doesnt mean I will like everything Rick does (not saying all diehards blindly love everything he does, but MANY do). Rick is one of my all time favorite songwriters... I have no reason to be lackluster in any review unless it is how I really feel...

This is not a bad release. Unfortunately, its not a good release either. It's a solid "ho hum". It's main problem is it and its songs is generally boring. The songs are either slow or most are lacking in emotion. Most are also very close to the originals in arrangement but a lesser finished product... in the way you hear when some studio band cranks out the top 40 hits "as performed by ____" that you used to see for $1.99 at department stores. For me, it makes me think of the originals and why I like them better. Broken Wings and Waiting For A Girl Like You are great songs originally... but they sound very similar here and in the case of WFAGLY, it was simply BETTER, with Lou Gramm singing it. Unfortunately, there is not one cover here that I think is an improvement upon the original... (unlike how Rick made "I've Done Everything For You" and a few other covers through his career so much better than their originals). Few here even get me remotely excited. Here, the standout covers are Human and Baker Street (which is a lighter more heartfelt version than the one put out a few years ago by Foo Fighters). The whole album is so lacking in intensity. I know he intentionally chose songs that are mellow, but I just dont think that was wise and it makes for a release that is easy to file in your collection and forget. There isn't any cover song except Baker Street that makes me want to hear it again. Rick is a master of intensity in the right places... Shock Denial Anger Acceptance seemed to reiterate that point both to Rick and to the fans. Had he done a cover CD with some more rocking tunes mixed in, I think it might have been at least more interesting if not downright good... this one just isn't and I can only hope this hasn't kept him from working on new songs for the next real CD.

The one gem on this release is Rick's own song Cry, and that alone really makes it worth something to the diehards (in addition to the fact that diehards will buy anything he does anyway). It is a very good song that is emotional and has some great vocals upon it. I find it only adds to my wish that Rick would have spent this time recording his own work than doing this! Unless you have all other Rick albums already, you are better off putting your money into them than this album. Especially be sure you have Shock Denial Anger Acceptance, Living In Oz, or Working Class Dog before even considering this one... those are Rick at his best.

(Again, this isnt a bad CD... but Rick's real work is so superior and an average release for Rick isnt indicative of his abilities. I'd hate to see someone buy this as their introduction to Rick and come away thinking he isn't all that good.)

This is not a hardcore rock album by ANY means...but, if you liked 70s/80s pop...and if you like Rick..this is a must-have. His voice is raspier than usual on this...which is a little hard to bear on some tracks...but, he keeps up with Richard Page on Broken Wings just fine! That is one of my fave tracks...and also, Waiting for a Girl Like You. Overall, gives you a great perspective on some tunes that Rick likes and for that alone, it's awesome.

Life In A Northern Town".
