    　群書類従を著した江戸時代の博識検校・塙保己一の物語だ。うっすらと名前しか知らない偉大な文化人が、生き生きと立ち現れた。目明きとは不便なものよ、と言ったとか実在したエピソードを印象的に描き上げている。少し文体にクセがあって読みにくいところもあったが、よくぞこんな人物に焦点を当ててくれたと、感銘を受けた。

    　ただ、最後に一人の人物がいくつかの事件に悪意で関わっていたとして伏線回収しているが、そこがちょっと残念だった。物語の完結性が高くなった分、物語そのものが閉じてしまい、一回りスケールを小さくしてしまった印象を受けた。その点に難ありとされれば直木賞の受賞は微妙だが、いくら史実の人物が素材だとはいえ、フィクションなんだから問題なしとなれば、本作は「多類婚姻譚」とともに二作受賞となるだろう。

    ●「保己一よお前はいったい何者なんだ？」と問われても一言では言い表せない。いや自分自身でさえ

    己が分からない。人間なんて皆そんなものなのだろうと思う。不完全である人間よりも、完全なる書物

    を愛す。目明きと同じところに立ちたい。目明きのくせに何にも見えていないではないか？保己一の多

    層的な心模様が描かれている。

    　他者への信頼感や他者からの評価、距離感あるいは仕事に対する姿勢など、一つひとつを再認識して

    構築して行く保己一の長い旅路。その抵抗の日々が読む者に感銘を与えている。ラスト…本音のかけら

    が胸を打った。

    　口から吐かれる昼餉の匂い、頭の中で拵える箪笥、のど仏の動く音や顎で首の肉を挟む音など目明き

    では思いもよらぬ言葉の数々。著者の独自の表現が物語に彩を添えていました。

    蝉谷めぐ実は歌舞伎を舞台にした作品でユニークな人物像や言葉の使い方に興味を覚えてフォローしてきた。今回の作品は目の見えない障碍者を主人公にしたもので、いかに正常者とのコミュニケーションが大変であるかを見事に表現している。彼女の成長とこの作品の素晴らしさは直木賞候補になるのは間違いない。

    塙保己一『群書類従』の名を知ってはいたが、その人物像や書物の内容についてはよく知らなかった。

    全盲の天才学者の幼少期から老境に至るまでの、波乱に満ちた足跡と書物編纂の経緯に惹かれ、興味深く読了した。

    年代別の象徴的なエピソードが時系列で連なり、生々しい会話の応酬を通して、本人の人物像が周囲の人との関わりの中で克明に、かつ残酷なリアリズムと共に見事に浮かび上がってくる。

    物語序盤で早くも名作の香りが漂うが、読み手に教養の深さや作者の意図を汲む勘の良さを求める作品でもあり、正直自分には少し荷が重かった。

    野暮な提案かもしれないが、各章の扉にあらすじを現代文で示す、大河ドラマの冒頭ナレーション的な記述があると良かったと思う。

    また保己一が検校に昇格する経緯や群書類従の書物としての姿形についての記述が、予備知識の乏しい自分には少し足りないように感じた。
