This weekend 's entertainment

I started the weekend last evening with a viewing of one episode of Foyle's War, never fails. The acting is so good, and Horowitz -- such a great scriptwriter. I have three more episodes to go. One per evening.

I was really pleased about one part of this. I noticed on my library account that it was ready for pickup, and drove to the library without angst about getting in the car, driving etc , just back to feeling pretty normal about errands.

Then, this morning,  cool but sunny after overnight rain, I went walking, most of my aches from overdoing having left. I made it to within a couple of hundred yards of the pond, but had to conserve energy to get home.

I saw this on the way, under a tree where I've seen robins.

Maybe a robin's egg, right color. It looks as if the little occupant didn't make it out. I wonder if a bluejay raided the nest. But nature's so abundant, it doesn't do to mourn every loss.

And here's a chipped old favorite Chinese teapot in her second career rooting coleus seedlings.

I've been reading that Atomic habits book, which could have been a long essay, but there are some good concepts there.

One I noticed this morning. He says when you don't seem to be progressing steadily, as in my walk, the effort isn't wasted, it's stored. I really like that. It means I'm banking walking ability to draw on soon and get me to the pond. I don't have to push further every time.

On which subject, I want to explain when I talked about weights yesterday, I didn't mean to trigger competitive feelings. I just named where I am. Larger weights than some people, smaller than others.

Everyone's different. One person gets enough resistance from four pounds as another might get from thirty. And experience counts, if you've been lifting for years or are just starting.

But I do say whatever weight you use, please use weights designed for the purpose. Don't listen to people saying oh, start with anything, water bottle, can of peas. They're not designed for your hand the way starter dumbbells are.

Dumbbells are balanced, with a center place to wrap your hand around. When you're starting, good form is important, to avoid injury. Your wrists won't thank you for many reps with a bottle or can. And I was advised to work in front of a mirror, to observe form.

Small weights aren't  expensive, so I don't regret buying weights meant for a hand to grip.  And if your hands are older and weaker, they'll thank you. Mine did. Just sayin. I passed on the smaller ones to another beginner a while back.

This is the end of today's dogmatic speech, stepping down from the worn out soapbox now.

Food today is about soup, toasted cheese sandwiches, tofu katsu, and whatever else I think of.  I'll bake the tofu sticks this time.

Happy day everyone, be yourself, everyone else is taken, maybe Oscar Wilde said that, maybe he just planned to and Marge Simpson got in first. Joke alert..

Tuesday Knitting Group, Textiles and Tea

Tuesday knitting group was the last till the New Year because the library will be closed for holidays those two Tuesdays.

No pix, no new projects, but interesting chat about teaching knitting, teaching art, pig Latin, Nutcracker, Indivisible, Universal Basic Income, black walnut dye, reed pens, Van Gogh, miniature making and more.

Then home to tea, birthday cake and a sudden visit from Gary about my house cleaners. He wants to suddenly hire them. Right away. Now. One time. Hm. He might get lucky. I gave him their full (hard, Czech) name and email.

Then Textiles and Tea featuring Jeanne Sisson, an artist who draws, paints, prints and stitches on fabric to make small works, many as small as 6"x 8". The biggest are about 20" square.

This was pretty far afield from weaving, quite a departure for HGA.

And finally my Horowitz came in at the library, after months, yay. Now on my Kindle.

Happy day everyone, enjoy whatever you can!

Misfits box, yawn, knitting, yawn,

Misfits Market day, and I was starting the reaction to the COVID-19 vax. Mainly crushing tiredness. The kind where you start to wash dishes and have to sit down several times in the process.

It took half a dozen stages to prep the Misfits box.

Missing the blueberries, but I'll live. I actually lashed out and bought a jar of marinara sauce. First time in living memory I didn't make the  sauce from scratch, but worth a try. Mainly with the penne pasta in this box.

Plenty of diced tomatoes for various dishes, from spaghetti sauce to baked egg-cheese-tomato on toast, to that eggs-tomato-greens dish from the Together cookbook.

Lovely fresh eggs, they're really a pleasure to handle, from chickens who'd had a decent life, as you can see from their egg quality.

Strawberries to accompany Tony's Chocolonely. Scallions to include in Yeung Man Cooking recipes.

I like the feeling, once the boring prep is done, that food is pretty much halfway there for next week. No apples this week, because the berries were the idea, but they ran out. S strawberries will work. And it's all good food.

After a morning spent online with lawyer friends analyzing exactly how much trouble Mayor Adams is in, news of the indictments broke while we were already talking, I started the second spiral sock.

After prep of the Misfits box, I set up to listen to The Twist of a Knife, Horowitz, and knit. At least that was the plan. Two hours later I woke up, made a pot of tea, and staggered back to the sofa. This is why I planned the vax for yesterday, so I could lie around today like a sloth and not miss anything.

I've been trying to be in touch with Florida friends, some of whom have evacuated to South Florida to other friends and are now chilling around the pool with all their kids and dogs. So far so good. I'm still on high alert for other friends, in place because the path of Helene is unpredictable.

Our weather is damp and mild, such a contrast. Happy day everyone, I hope you're safe or soon will be.

Saturday, slow day

Saturday, I did very little, walked, made fishcakes, served with a green salad, chocolate pudding, and mostly listened to this wonderful mystery

BERJAYA

I think I was reminded of him in a couple of other blogs, maybe something is streaming and causing it to crop up. Anyway I love Horowitz and his double narrative form, one story inside another, so this was great.

In the course of watching I got another batch of postcards addressed,  and  a pair of socks finished,

and did quite a bit of dozing.

Earlier I'd walked, and seen these swags of berries

Natural art.

Just one of the most restful days I've had in ages. Resting is not a thing I do very much, but today I did a good job of it.

We're at the equinox, so Gaia is showing us how to go on.

Happy day, everyone, hats off to people who know how to rest. Maybe I can read books about it, take a course in speed resting? 😉
