Innocence !

Here is a lovely story and photo courtesy of Marjorie...

This is a photo which stood in the window of Taylor & Wain's studio on Hamnett St.
It is a photo of me aged 5. I was watching the photographer preparing his camera and was unaware that he had taken it.
My mother had a copy in black & white but this one was hand coloured by George Wain and put in the window. My mother asked for it but was refused. For years I stood at the Shaw Hall bus stop outside Woolworths, on the way home, looking at myself. When I went to the Grammar school Mr Wain was my art teacher and I mentioned the photo. He told me it was his favourite child study and the next day brought it in to school and gave it to me.
Nice man, Mr Wain. We kept in touch until he died.

Many Thanks, Marjorie...and what a great photograph.:)
Mr Wain painted a beautiful picture of My Nan which still hangs proudly at my parents house.
He was a very talented man indeed..

George Wain Article.

I came across this newspaper article from the North Cheshire Herald from 1998.
Sadly George Wain is no longer with us but he left us the legacy of his students. I'm happy to say I have an Owen Traynor painting which I received for my 18th Birthday. It still has pride of place in my house. I also have a James Fidler sketch which he gave to me when I was a pupil of his at Astley Grammar School. He was a great Teacher, I have to add.

If any of the students mentioned in the article read this, let us know if you received your work back from George - It would be great to know after all this time.

Hyde Festival Orchestra.

Photobucket

This a photo of Hyde Festival Orchestra (HFO). This Orchestra was formed almost 60 years ago and continues into present day although much reduced in size.
George Wain can be seen playing the trombone far left back row. George Wain, a renowned art teacher at Hyde Grammar School, was also an amateur film maker. During WWll he was commissioned by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to make road safety films for school children. George Wain also played a "musical saw" as his party piece. He was last seen playing in the Liberal club in Floweryfield, Hyde.
This photo shows the Orchestra in the Hyde Festival Theatre where they used to meet to practise. Before they moved here they used to use a room in Ashton Brothers' Bayleyfield Mill. My Mum played the first violin in the HFO for many years. I have very fond memories of the concerts they used to perform at Hyde Town Hall....nothing to do with the fact that we could roam the Town Hall unsupervised whilst the concert was in progress. :) Sorry Mum....

Much Ado, A George Wain Film from 1947

The late George Wain was an art master at Hyde Grammar School, he made this film in 1947, it is just one of a few of his films to be found on You Tube.. This one show Green Street, Dowson Road, and Knott Lane... Knott Lane looks about as nice a place as any around this area... as I grew up on the Cheetham Fold estate this film awakes many memoris of the train lines and level crossing near to farm lane.. and the foot paths towards the canal and Gib Row.. ENJOY .. I did.
