Surviving

26 Jan

It’s hard to do much when it’s as cold as we’ve been.  I certainly haven’t taken my camera out. I’m mostly just doing chores.

Everyone comes for the grain.

Although, sometimes, the geese get stepped on.  I do try to find them a place where they will be safe.

Miss Goose and buffy

You know who is the actual meanest to the geese–not accidentally stepping on them?  Shelby.  She’s gotten really brazen about pushing the geese out of the way.

Anyhow, after we’re done with grain.  I make sure they all have hay.  With it this cold, I’m putting most of it in the barn.

Popcorn is pretty wimpy about standing up for his pile of hay.  I will put him a bit outside where it’s sheltered from the wind.

I just do chores and keep checking on everyone.

Inside Weather

25 Jan

There’s not a lot of good to say about our weather right now.  It’s just good weather to be inside.  So, once again, I’m just sharing some of what we do in the house (besides staring at a computer).

Of course, there’s lots of sleeping cats.

Herbie is such a little love bug.

Why not sleep on the cooler I set there to take back to the car?

I also am thrilled to have some flowers to look at.  My Thanksgiving cactus is putting on a pretty good show right now.

And I always love my plants.  The prince of orange is gorgeous.  I love those new leaves.

The new monstera leaf is at the point it wants to start standing up, but that means it was dangling over the vent on my oven.  I had to move it so I didn’t bake it.

That means, I had to move the ornamental pepper also.  And I honestly don’t know what to do with it.  I just can’t get rid of all the spider mites and I’m afraid they will spread.  I can’t just throw it out into the cold though.  Seriously.  I thought about taking it to the soap room and keeping it there to try and treat it, but we’re so cold it wouldn’t even survive that short walk.

Do you see the dirt on the floor?  Some naught cat decided to play in it since I moved it.  Of course, 99% of the time when I’m talking about a naughty cat, I mean Salem.  He’s lucky I adore black cats.

I am also facing a decision with the remaining baby pomegranates.  I think it’s a failed experiment.  I might try it again, but I would start them outside in the spring and hope they would grow a sturdy enough trunk to support them.  These are never going to do that.

Finally, I accidentally knocked of a strand from my string of pearls.

I’m trying to start it (because I seriously need another plant), but I’ve never been successful doing that, so we’ll see.

We’re Over Winter

24 Jan

Like the rest of the country, we’ve been continuing with crazy weather.

BERJAYA

sun and wicked clouds on Wednesday

Wednesday wasn’t too bad for temperature, but we were under a high wind warning.

BERJAYA

We had gusts over 50 mph (Daisy’s beard blowing in the wind)

BERJAYA

Now we’re in the deep freeze.

BERJAYA

Look at that wind chill!

We didn’t have school on Friday because of the extreme cold warning.  I’m glad I put the chickens in the Love Shack; they are fairly comfortable in there.

BERJAYA

I have the doors shut for the Morton building and the buck room.

Everyone else is hanging in there.  I did re-staple a couple of the tarps.

All this coming week looks pretty cold.  But rumor has it that we’re going to warm up for the first week in February.  And how are we already almost to February?
