“We are a nation founded as a rebuke to tyranny. A nation of revolutionaries who refused sovereign reign from afar. Hear me – we’re a nation that says give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. A nation built on our differences, guided by the belief that we’re all created equal.”

A Nature Note…..Massive Winter Storm With Damaging Ice In South, Heavy Snow From Texas To Northeast To Affect Over 230 Million

A major, widespread, long-lasting winter storm will hammer parts of the South, Midwest and Northeast Friday through Monday with potentially damaging ice and heavy snow for millions from New Mexico and Texas to parts of New England. This storm will lead to widespread dangerous travel and its destructive South ice storm could lead to long-lasting power outages and tree damage.

Winter Storm

The storm has been named Winter Storm Fern by The Weather Channel. According to The Weather Company forecasters, Fern could affect over 230 million in the U.S. with snow and/or ice, two-thirds of the nation’s estimated population. Either heavy snow or ice is forecast for 33 states from the storm, from Arizona to the Midwest, South and New England.

Impacts are expected to be most severe in areas where winter storm warnings and ice storm warnings will eventually be issued. Here’s what these warnings mean:

Winter storm warning: A high expectation of disruptive, significant snow, ice and/or sleet. Mixed precipitation is likely in a lot of places. Power outages are expected and travel will be impossible.

Ice storm warning: A high expectation that ice/freezing rain will be the main precipitation type and that it will be disruptive and damaging. Power outages are expected and travel will be impossible. Some of the most significant damage this weekend will come from these zones.

Snow storm coming in. We have had rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow so far this winter. Unexpected visitors must know that I have duck food available.

BERJAYANature walks are wonderful. But you don’t have to traveto special location to enjoy Mother Nature. There is so much to see in your own neighborhood or even in your own back or front yard. Get a guide-book of the wildlife in your area and learn the calls of birds and frogs and toads. So many times I hear a bird that lets me know what I am looking for in the trees.
