Sharbat Gula

BERJAYA

Sharbat Gula (1972 -     )
Afghan refugee, child bride, widow and mother;
became internationally famous as the unidentified subject of the
1985 National Geographic cover photo Afghan Girl;
in 2002 she was identified, located, photographed
a second time, and financially compensated by National Geographic;
a refugee from the Soviet-Afghan War, she lived in Pakistan
from early 1980s to 2016, was deported to Afghanistan in 2017,
and granted asylum in Italy in 2021.

    It was heartbreaking when National Geographic found her those years later. It was gratifying to learn she was compensated. I hope her life is good now.
