Return Home Away From Home

 In case you did not guessed, we are back home. I say "back home", and truly we are in our house, but not in the country that I call my home. I still feel like a foreigner in England, even though my wife and my son are English. I am jetlagged, tired, the house is cold, but I am glad to be back, because holidays are exhausting. I am still sad about all the things we missed, all the things we will be missing here, and of all the things I wanted to do there but did not have time. So many people to see. Anyway, it is back to normal for me today, I will try to get through the jetlag and keep myself busy.

Une Galette des Rois

 Aujourd'hui, c'est l'Épiphanie, ou la Fête des Rois,ou plus simplement les Rois. Le dernier jour des Fêtes, du moins c'était le cas quand j'étais enfant. Si jamais vous voule revivre la tradition, achetez une galette. J'ai appris que la Maison du Pain à Chicoutimi en vend une. À en croire leur photo sur la page Facebook, elle est de facture classique, ce qui est très bien. Ici, je suis de retour de voyage et je n'ai ni l'énergie ni le talent pour en faire une. Et je n'en ai jamais vu dans les commerces.

Russian Breakfast Tea

One of the many nice things about visiting my parents, is that I can plunder their tea stocks and find really nice brews. My mother does not like tea, my father only drinks it sporadically, so they have always more tea than needed. So anyway, long story short, I stumbled upon this brew from Mariage Frères, ironically enough a French tea company. I hadn't had a Russian type tea for a long while, so I had to try this Russian Breakfast Tea. Nicely smooth and strong, absolutely perfect. 

Les Rois demain

Le temps des Fêtes est fini, à toutes fins pratiques. Même si c'est demain l'Épiphanie, ou les Rois, comme on l'appelait quand j'étais enfant. On la fêtait bien entendu avec la fameuse galette des Rois, un gâteau avec une fève dedans. La vraie galette, je n,en ai mangé qu'une fois rendu à Montréal, que j'achetais à Première Moisson, juste pour la forme. Je la mangeais le 6 et la terminais les jours d'après. Pour moi, c'est un dessert aigre-doux, qui me traite tant bien que mal la mélancolie d'après Noël.

Spies in The Compleat Angler

Today is an interesting date for amateurs of spy thrillers, especially fans John Le Carré. In Call for the Dead, George Smiley receives this letter on the 3rd of January: 

"Dear George, 

    It is essential that I lunch with you tomorrow at The Compleat Angler at Marlow. Please do your best to meet me there at one o'clock. There is something I have to tell you.

Yours,

Samuel Fennan"

So it is on this date that was supposed to take place the meeting, but Samuel Fennan died before. The Compleat Angler is still in business and both the hotel and the town of Marlow are perfectly atmospheric places for a spy thriller. I can't be there today (don't think I could afford lunch there anyway), but I always wondered if something might happen there.

Vieux chandail vert

Quand je reviens chez mes parents, je redécouvre des vieilles choses. Comme ce vieux chandail vert, qui a environ 25 ans d'âge. Il est vieux, troué, mais il me fait encore et est toujours très confortable. Ma femme déteste le vert comme couleur, surtout comme couleur de vêtement, pour une raison quelconque. Mais je songe à l'expatrier avec moi. Sans doute que je vais le garder ici: j'ai en masse de chandails chauds à la maison et celui-ci commence sérieusement à défraîchir. Quand même, je le porte toujours avec plaisir.

Hamlet on stage

It struck me recently: I haven't seen a play in a long while. Not since I am a dad, at least. A few years ago, I used to go and watch them whenever I could. I need to put this on my new year's resolutions list: go and see some plays. And I also found out, thanks to the Facebook page of the National Theatre that they are making a production of Hamlet. It is the very first play of Shakespeare I read and maybe my favourite one. Yet I don't think I have ever seen it performed on stage, only in films. So I might see if I can watch it on cinema screen, like I did for many NT productions a decade or so ago.

Une cabane à chauves-souris sous la neige

Petite découverte hier lors de notre sortie dans la neige: mon père a installé une cabane à chauves-souris au sommet du mur de la remise. J'ai vérifié et la cabane demeure inhabitée. Dommage. Pas de chauve-souris qui y hiberne. Quand même, j'aime avoir des chauves-souris comme voisines. J'espère que la cabane sera habitée le printemps venu: les chauves-souris, c'est pratique pour contrôler les populations d'insectes. Dans tous les cas, c'est une jolie image avec le chapeau de neige.

Le temps du feu de foyer

 Photo prise il y a quelques semaines. Juste pour dire que c'est le temps des feux de foyer ces temps-ci. C'est calmant, après une période toujours effrénée.

The month of Janus

I found this picture in a book on Greek and Roman mythology which I liked a lot as a child. I learned from it that January is the month of the Roman god Janus, a two face god, with one face looking into the past and one face looking into the future. It is a mysterious god, as fairly little is known about him. He is a god of time, passage and transition and of course he gave his name to January. I blogged about him before, I thought today was a good time to blog about him again.

Les spectacles de l'hiver

Je me console que Noël soit terminé en me disant qu'au moins nous avons quelques jours afin de permettre à petit loup de faire l'expérience de l'hiver québécois. Il y a quelques jours, il a pu voir passer la gratte chez ses grand-parents. C'est toujours impressionnant pour lui, je dirais même un peu magique.

Less of a post-Christmas blues

Well, here it is, Christmas is over and has been for a while. I am oficially in post-Christmas blues mode. I don't feel too bad about it, however, for a number of reasons. I am at home for one, so I am not feeling homesick. And it is a proper winter here, with snow and everything. So I feel like I experienced Christmas as it should be. I might feel different about it come January, but right now, I am just chilling and enjoying the moment, without having to stress about too many things just yet.

Guille et Brigitte Bardot

Je sais, j'ai déjà blogué ce gag  de Mafalda en 2018, mais le décès récent de Brigitte Bardot me l'a remis en mémoire. Toujours aussi drôle et Guille est vraiment mon personnage préféré de la série.

Railway "Action" Figures

 Every Christmas at home, since I am a child, we have the LGB model train at the foot of the Christmas tree. We have been having it for more than thirty years. We also have from early on LGB train figures. This is the very first set we've had: the 5045 one. It consists of a mechanic, a hot dog/burher salesman, a waiter and a signalman (I thinik?). When Iw as a child, the waiter was my favourite figure, for some reason. These people lived many adventures on the railway, fighting villains and spies, going from place to place, they really are adventurers as much as railway or train staff. We still play with them from time to time. Sadly, we lost the waiter and we cannot find him anymore. If I can find an affordable one second hand, I might buy a new waiter one day.

La tourtière

Moment incontournable pour chaque séjour au Saguenay durant les Fêtes: faut que je mange de la tourtière (et je veux dire de la vraie tourtière, pas un pâté à la viande) une fois durant ma visite. Ce fût le cas hier. Il y avait du lièvre et de l'orignal en bonne quantité, elle goûtait vraiment la viande de bois. Par gourmandise autant que par appétit, je me suis servi deux fois. Il y en a encore pour ce soir, alors je ne me gênerai pas.

Noël blanc

 Photo prise hier, le jour de Noël, quand la neige tombait. Pas une tempête, mais pas mal. Le Saguenay est l'un des rares endroits au monde maintenant où l'on a des chances raisonnables d'avoir un Noël blanc. Petit loup le sait et c'est la raison pour laquelle nous sommes venus cette année, il a même insisté. Je ne sais pas quand sera la prochaine fois où nous fêterons Noël au Québec, ou quand sera notre prochain Noël blanc. Mais je suis heureux que nous aurons eu celui-ci.
