recent ebay experience

Remember ebay, that auction site?

Unlike Baywatch on ebay you watch auctions. (did you know "Baywatch the movie" is in production?)

Like many internet things (groupon, blogs?) I believe ebay hit its peak a few years ago. Perhaps you still use it. I did a few weeks ago. Many years ago I wrote a post about a memory I sold on ebay.

This time is was our daughter's old Ipod. Actually that’s another internet related gadget that peaked years ago. If you bother to look at recent Apple history you’ll see how the Ipod evolved into the Iphone. Add a phone feature to an Ipod, sell lots of them and soon people will forget the phone part of the gadget.

So our daughter excavated her old Ipod, its cord and charger. No original earbuds but we have an abundance of headsets. I charged it up and it played great.

This Ipod was a first generation one. It “only” had 5 GB and used a scroll wheel that actually turned. It was thick because inside was tiny spinning hard drive. She had not used it for more years than she did use it (did that make sense?).

Turns out I had saved the original box because I was so impressed with Apple’s packaging. The box had a picture of Bob Marley singing on it. Here’s a picture I used in the auction.

BERJAYA

After checking out a few similar ones being auctioned, I figured it would probably sell for about $100. That's a nice chunk of change and certainly worth doing an auction. I started it out at $89 and set it up for a 10 day auction.

After a day or two, I had received a couple of emails asking if I would offer a "Buy It Now" price. I replied back telling them no. In one response I explained that I'm not a business and therefore not worried about moving inventory. I could certainly wait out the auction duration. The first few bids move it to the mid $90 range.

While the bid sat at $94, I received an email from a "student" who wanted this Ipod for his "project" which just happened to have a deadline before the auction end date. We exchanged a few emails through the ebay site. In the end I told this "student" that unfortunately my auction and his deadline conflict. Days later the bidding jumped to over $140.

On the final day of the auction, just a few hours before ending, the bidding broke $200. Our daughter was excited to read my text about the latest value.

One thing about computerized auctions - lots of action in just seconds. A flurry of what I assume must of been automated bid generators kick in during the last minutes. Final price - $535.

That is more than the price tag when we bought it new and of course it's used. So keep those first edition gadgets with the original packaging. Assuming the gadgets didn't break from use you might get your money back.

smartphone tragedy

Today with light hearts, we here at the Lisleman Institute for Better Posting feel compelled to report on a terrible first world problem has hit the urban hipster population hard:
The I-phone 6 bends in hipster jeans.

BERJAYA
TOO BIG for anyone's pocket

The problem is this latest ultimate high-classed thin smartphone was not designed to bend ( I’m not sure if the hipster jeans were meant to bend either). Can you imagine the angst running through you after finishing your hipster chai, you stand up to discover your new I-phone 6 is bent and broken? The very gadget you paid hundreds of dollars for someone to stand in line so that you could be the first one at the club with one. (a moment of silence please)

BERJAYA

The Lisleman solution -
Bring back the fanny pack (oh “fanny” would not be a good descriptor for Brit slang speaking hipsters) and make it hip again. Hey, it’s retro right? The expensive I-phone 6 would be secure in your skinny fanny pack.

Please understand I’m a big apple fan. I researched and wrote this post on a MacBook (I think it was a hip gadget once). However, I believe Apple messed up on this recent product release. I would not go as far as (but do find it hilarious) dissing the company with a fake ad like this one:

(Disclosure: I have NEVER slipped on a pair of hipster jeans since attempting it would test the laws of physics and leave those embarrassing jeans stuck on my ass.)

fragment days or days of fragments

Warning: The following contains an acceptable amount of errors. Please remember this is the internet.

What reads better? fragment days or days of fragments? Really, do you give a click?
I benefit from low expectations.

One thing I've come to expect is Friday Fragment posts.  I just looked back deep into my soul blog post history and discovered I joined in on the FF thing back in 2010.  (read my first one here)

While I'm sure Mrs. 4444 has more than enough fragments of snow and ice (we do), she welcomes new fragment posts every Friday at her blog.

BERJAYA

Speaking of ice and snow, this polar vortex must have enjoyed it’s visit back in earlier January because it keeps coming back. It really has become an unwelcomed guest. The other day we thought we would warm up by watching “The Heat” movie (on DVD). Very funny movie and the extras on the DVD are worth watching too. My laughing probably warmed me up a little. My mood certainly was improved.

The laptop, she-who-knows uses, was getting slower than an AARP tweet. In gadget-years it was approaching 90. I decided getting a new model would be less frustrating than trying to keep the old clunker running virus free (I talking about the laptop - what were you thinking?). Actually, we went beyond new model and went for a new type of gadget, a tablet. Also, the old clunker was windoze operated and the choice to go Apple I-pad was a no brainer for me. I have found Apple gadgets age better than the competition.

The touch no-mouse interface (you smartphone smarties know better than me) is very different than the mouse right/left clicking I was doing long before Myspace pages came and went. I was trying to figure out email delete/trash stuff and thought I would ask Siri. Remember all the Siri stories and parodies. I’ll tell you now, she is still around for a fun time.

I asked Siri, “Go to help”.
Siri replied “Did I do something wrong?”
Puzzled I stared at the screen and noticed my translated text was “Go to hell”.
She-who-knows, after she was done laughing said, “see I’m not the only who has trouble understanding you.”

I still haven’t found what I’m blogging for. I'm thinking of writing a parody on U2’s “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for”. Nah, my luck I’ll end up in a Joshua Tree out in the desert. I think I have a mindset issue. (I’ve been setting my mind down too often

fragday frigments fun

Do you like to make up words?  Who do you think you are?  A neologist?

Creating words can be both fun and frustrating.  It depends on who is listening if anyone at all.

Here at A Few Clowns Short, fragday should make sense to the many followers of the Friday Fragments postings.  These postings are linked and promoted  at Mrs. 4444's blog.  Anyone who figured out the meaning of fragday probably knows of her blog.

BERJAYA

I was fairly certain there would be a word for the study of words. Actually there are a few related words about words. I'm not talking about words-with-friends played with a relative either. I found neology after I was looking through this long list of sciences and studies (here is the link). Very interesting list for the curious.  Have you ever heard of arctophily? It's the study and/or collecting of teddy bears (I don't suspect the career opportunities in the arctophily field are great though).  Now that word was not made up by a teddy bear.

Using knowledge like this I hope someday to beat the whole family at scrabble.

Apple offered me a new brain this week. Ok, my laptop which I spend many hours on most days was given a new brain. The "soft" type of brain. Apple's Macintosh Operating System (OS) had a new release. An Apple OS release event occurs about every year or year and a half. What was different this time was Apple's decision to offer it for FREE. The soft brain of my laptop was a number of releases old but still made the cutoff for this free offer. It took a long time to download and reboot. I understand you can also take your mac into their store and have the new OS installed there.

My headphones are playing my I-tunes list again. Extra points - what was the name of the girl at the turnstile with kaleidoscope eyes? (hint - she was also in the sky with diamonds)

If you have not seen the following clip yet (it went viral) take a look. Not that it surprises me, but this once again shows that film makers can pull off the best pranks. This clip is a great promo for their movie. After you watch it, let me know if you would have enjoyed being at that coffee shop that day. I would have loved it. What great blog material.

Once again, I have become comfortably posted.

Occasionally a feeling of knowing what I’m talking about overcomes me. You see, I've been through the internet on a blog with no name. I know you can learn on the internet. I fixed our dryer once from knowledge acquired via youtube videos.

oh blog it

I’m not enjoying Windows 8. There was a time I spelled it windose. Full disclosure - I’m a Mac guy who has a few windows machines in the closet. I’m writing this on a MacBook Pro.

All my computer experienced originated through work. You see, I was working before the PC was invented. Oh I remember the mysterious Unix, and the simple Ms. Dos. Mac showed up with nicer colors and sounds. The most important thing was it just worked easier.

BERJAYA

So why Windose 8?

Last week I was honored by a call from my brother. He was going shopping for a laptop and wanted my opinion. He hates computers. I know a few others that do. I blame windose and the community of spammers for the rancor my brother and others like him have towards these machines.

We discussed the lovely MacBook Pro but the reality of the marketplace makes it hard to justify a machine for occasional use that’s double the price of other functional machines.

BERJAYA

I enjoyed our shopping experience. He told me a trip to the dentist is better than shopping for a laptop for him.

We ended up with a Lenovo for under $500. It came with Windows 8.

I still remember the crazy windose 3.1 memory allocation exercises. Windose NT offered hope for the crazy software. Most of my recent trials were on an older beast running windose XP.

I spent a few hours helping him to get things setup with 8, but it’s certainly not great. My impression of it is they crammed a tablet system into laptop software. Too many functions seem to disappear from sight. The opaque windows don’t offer a view of what’s going on inside.

My frustration peaked when I couldn’t get a youtube clip to play on his laptop.

Anyone have a Window 8 experience to share?

(note: I received NO sponsorship but wish I did for this post.)

future friday fragments

time - it's so confusing

It's already Friday where some readers live.  So if you read this on Thursday then consider it a future Friday Fragment.

Don't know if Princess of FF, Mrs. 4444, has a crystal ball or any crystal for that matter.  But she does collect FF posts and you can enjoy them anytime.

Mommy's Idea

Dumb criminal stories are funny, don't you think?

This is not the first time I've heard of a sting like the Cook County Sheriff did recently.  They sent 10,000 letters to people with outstanding warrants offering promises of $500 gift coupons, plasma televisions and video game systems.  50 wanted fugitives made appointments to collect their prize.  Their prize was a ride to jail.

BERJAYA

I was digging through boxes of old pictures (hey don't get going about organizing them.  Some are in albums) and came across this one from a past Halloween.  Maybe our family was a-few-clowns-short-of-a-circus.

BERJAYA

Last Sunday I posted a few old pictures.  Pictures are among those things that get better with age.  People also can get better with age.  It is just a matter of what they get better at.  Blogging might be one.

BERJAYA

Old vs. new -  Now you might have seen the Apple ad for their latest I-phone smartphone.  You might even have one already.  I'm not a smartphone user but if you are and have interacted with this personal assistant, Siri, please share in the comment section.  I find the whole subject of computer interaction interesting.  I knew it would not be long before we saw Siri parodies.  Here's an ad you will never see Apple run but it will crack you up.

I discovered by accident that blogger offers up your post pictures in a slideshow now.  For as long as I can remember, readers could click on post picture and if there was larger version it would pop up.  Now when you click on a picture you get the bigger version but it comes in a nice slideshow along with the other post pictures.  Go ahead give it a try here and let me know what you think.

Happy Halloween

digital impact

As I glanced down at the front page of today’s Chicago Tribune, I see the face of the man who had the vision behind the laptop on which I create. I agree with giving Steve Jobs the headline, “American Pioneer”.

But many more people will not be reading or learning about his legacy from a newspaper. Their media of choice will be digital media. Today our habits have become digital.

FB, G+, blogs, laptops, smartphones, and real life can combine in good and bad ways. I don’t know if social media makes us more or less social, but our gadgets play a role in real life get-togethers.

Que Hora es - about noon at the moment.

But the answer to this question for me has expanded to, “time for a laugh”.

Confused?

Yes, I am most of the time too. I’ll explain.

Part of my digital habit is youtube. I enjoy discovering funny and interesting clips. I listen to music on youtube. I create my own clips

Have you noticed youtube clips coming up in conversation at family parties lately?

Oh did you see the youtube clip of the blah blah blah?

Oh you need to see it. Let me grab my laptop ….

On our recent trip I described to my wife the youtube clip of a skit called “Que Hora es” that I had found. I guess, I described it very well because she was cracking up. We were in the car at the time so she didn’t get to see it but found the idea very funny. (it came from a short lived show called “Cedric the Entertainer Presents”)

While at my sister’s place it wasn’t too long before I mentioned this youtube gem. My wife urged me to pull it up on my laptop. She still have not seen it.

My BIL found it hilarious. He quickly shared it with his brothers and sisters. I learned he knows more Spanish than me. My limited amount comes from visiting Spanish speaking countries and having a few Spanish speaking relatives.

Maybe in the future we won’t retell jokes but show funny video clips instead. Going completely digital is not good but these gadgets can add to the fun. I think a good balance of sharing laughs by telling jokes and showing clips works the best.

Here’s the skit - enjoy

Baby you can drive my car

Just be sure to take The Long and Winding Road. I need some time to write a blog post.

Well if you haven’t heard that the Beatles are now available on Apple’s ITunes, you probably don’t care much for Beatles’ music or digital versions of their music. It would have been a much bigger deal if it had happened years ago but it still makes more of the their songs available as individual songs.

(most of you can skip over this background explanation)
Kids that became a teenager AG (after google) would not understand the whole single vs. album buying difference. Way back in time, there was the 45 which had 2 songs (A side, B side) and then the LP (long-playing) album would have a dozen plus songs on it. Very often you would buy an album only to discover that you really liked only one or two songs.

BERJAYA

Now with ITunes you can easily just buy the one song you want and not pay for the ones you don’t care about.

But there’s even more side benefits of the ITunes Beatles page.

Apple has included some interesting videos you can watch for free. Watching the beginning of their Washington DC concert is interesting because you can just tell that the whole rock concert thing was still so new. They took the train from New York and you can watch Ringo moving his drum set around on stage. No roadies I assume.

There’s a lengthy biography page covering the band members from the 50’s to the 90’s.

Last summer I posted my take on the RollingStone magazine’s rating of Beatles songs. Most of you agreed with me, it was wrong. If you didn’t read that post go take a look. It’s right here.

Now that the songs are available individually to today’s audience it’s interesting to see what songs are making it to the top. I suspect the songs will change position over time. Right now according to ITunes sales the top 3 songs are:
  1. Here Comes The Sun (maybe it will drop down after winter?)
  2. Let It Be
  3. In My Life

This Boy who is just The Fool On The Hill already had these so I bought some others.

I like the convenience of being able to pick up a favorite of mine without the whole album. Maybe you remember it. It was not a big hit but I enjoy Lennon’s energy singing and howling “Hey Bulldog”.

the third founder of apple

Hey this reminds of the fifth Beatle.

I found an interesting press release about a Apple documentary. Here's a short description from the documentary's web site.
“Welcome to Macintosh - The documentary for the rest of us.” is the first documentary of its kind to mix history, criticism and an unapologetic revelry of all things Apple into a movie experience.....
There is some trailers and clips available at their site.

Over the years (I started using a mac in the early 90's) I have read and seen many things about Apple but I did not know of this third founder. Steve Jobs is the most famous and Steve Wozniak (Woz) is known by most mac believers. I didn't even know there was a third guy involved at the start. His name is Ron Wayne.

Talk about wanting to KICK YOURSELF. This guy passed up a chance to be a billionaire.

From wikipedia:
He was given a 10% stake in Apple, but relinquished his stock for $800 only two weeks later because legally all members of a partnership are personally responsible for any debts incurred by any of the other partners.
He explains what happened in the interview video below. I guess you just can't predict the future and sometimes you don't want to take a risk.

now for the next mac rumor

MacWorld 2009 keynote presentation is now over. The rumors surrounding Apple's decision to drop out next year and the absent Steve Jobs bounced Apple's stock like a ?? - shaken iPhone.

No big announcement - but one item was that songs on iTunes are going to drop in price.

This Macheads trailer is interesting and I gather it came out almost a year ago. First time I ran across it was just today. Anybody know if it made it to DVD?

The mac rumors will probably die down for awhile now, but Steve Jobs and crew know how to get them going again.

If the stock dives into the 80's it might be a good buy.

fun suggestions for apple

  • Living out of an old camper shell
  • I-survive
  • Jobscrape
Those are trends or applications I don't want to see. But this video (found on Wired site) is fun to watch.

Now the Mac vapor laptop - now that's great idea - well for Apple shareholders anyway!

Apple and Atomic Bomb

atomic bomb

The atomic bomb flight suit from WWII.

toolbox

The toolbox from Apple Computer.

This strange combination has something in common - both are up for auction soon. The above pictures were taken from Alexander Autographs , an auction house in Stamford CT.

I found the story of the toolbox interesting. It belong to Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak. Here's how this other Apple employee obtained the toolbox.
After seeing Steve Wozniak's box laying around for some time, I asked him about it, and he said he had no interest in it. I asked him if I could have it, and he said 'yes'...".

So if you think a co-worker will be famous someday ask him/her for some old stuff of theirs. This toolbox might go for $5000.

reason for wi-fi on flights

BERJAYA
Two of my favorite things in the above picture - Apple (Steve Jobs show) and Starbucks.
(oh thanks to the blogger at wired.com I found out about the news and got this nice picture)

So the news - Ipod blah blah blah

No really besides the expected updates to the I-pod product line, Apple announced a music store that is accessible via Wi-Fi and Starbucks. Walk into a Starbucks with the new Wi-Fi equipped I-pod and you will be connected to the special I-tunes store and be able to order music. This access is FREE unlike the normal wi-fi access at Starbucks. Like most press releases, this still needs to be rolled out to the stores so don't try it today or even tomorrow. Chicago Starbucks are not scheduled until March of 2008. I don't know what special things they need to do but I would guess it's a matter of some configuration changes that I wouldn't think would take so long. Who knows, maybe they need new access points.

I believe this I-tunes store should work via laptops too. So although they have a very cool wi-fi I-pod, you could use your laptop with I-tunes setup on it. At least, I think so.

So now the I-pod nation just needs Apple to partner-up with an Airline that has Wi-Fi equipped aircraft. The Wi-Fi aircraft have been done - Airfone trials, Boeing's Connexion, Aeromobile. Of course, Aircell is planning this too.

I'm just wondering if Apple and their Wi-Fi I-pod marketers know about the possible wi-fi future in aircraft.

Picture this - you fill some of that idle flight time with selecting some new tunes for your listening pleasure. Last I checked United served Starbucks.
