Today Is the 80th Anniversary of V-E Day
Victory in Europe Day celebrates the formal acceptance by the World War II Allies of Nazi Germany's official, unconditional surrender of its armed forces on May 8, 1945. V-E Day is now celebrated across many European nations as public holidays and national observances.
And three days ago on May 5, the 80th anniversary was celebrated of the Liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. The Germans were defeated by the united effort of Canadian, British, Polish, American, Belgian, Dutch and Czechoslovak forces. That's where my father was 80 years ago with his regiment, the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, newly made part of the Canadian Corps following the Italian campaign.
And now, here we are in the Western World 80 years later and WTF is going on? It sickens me to see the rise once again of right-wing extremism, authoritarian ideology, and virulent hate in Europe, North America and elsewhere. Anyone who today adheres to those destructive movements or who works to advance their interests spits in the face of every dead or wounded Allied soldier, veteran, civilian casualty, and victimized survivor of World War II atrocities and hate.
Without exception. There is no excuse to justify it.
And that's all I have to say about that.

Strategic Voting For The Win!
Because of American threats against Canadian economic and political sovereignty, the Liberal Party won in yesterday's federal election. As of this moment it is still unclear whether it will be a majority or a minority government, as some close ridings are still in play. The Liberals were able to win because the Bloc Québécois vote in Quebec and the progressive NDP vote across Canada went over in droves to the Liberals due to strategic voting.
I'm relieved that Prime Minister Mark Carney will be the one to deal with the difficult times ahead. He has an impeccable resume of calm and competent crisis management, having been Governor of the Bank of Canada during a previous recession and Governor of the Bank of England during Brexit. He has first class international contacts, connections and respect. He is not hindered by extremist ideology.
In any other set of circumstances but the current one of American aggression, Pierre Poilievre's Conservative Party would have won. They may well eventually win an election which, in my opinion, would not be good news for Canada. The party is too dominated by "Maple MAGAs" enamoured of extremist right-wing views and policies. I predict an imminent internal power struggle within its ranks now that Poilievre has lost. The ugly cracks were already showing during the campaign. Before the next election, I'm also counting on everyday Canadian voters learning a valuable lesson from watching the ongoing MAGA destruction of the political, economic, and social fabric of the United States, with its inevitable catastrophic consequences.
In the meantime, Canadians and its new government need to get on with the crisis at hand.

The Centrality of Empathy
If someone has empathy, they can overcome
their prejudice and hatred based on ignorance
by unlearning it and adopting new views --
However, you cannot do this if you lack
the necessary empathy in the first place.
It's why the very concept of empathy is
always attacked by the extremist right --

Checking In With Captain America
Four years ago in 2016,
when Trump was elected President,
my shocked and appalled post at that time
explored how Captain America felt
about the whole situation --
So how is Captain America feeling now?
In fact, he's downright giddy
that Trump is "one and done" --
And don't you agree THIS
would be a great idea?
But is that really necessary?
If you saw the last Avengers movie, Endgame,
you might have thought to yourself:
"Damn, Old Man Steve looks familiar . . .".
Congratulations on winning the United States Presidential Election to Avengers: Endgame star Joe Biden!
AHA! I KNEW IT!
