Dedicated to adventures beyond the front door, The Winding Trail is where we venture out onto trails both far from home and down the road in search of stories, hidden places and time outdoors. Scroll down for all our most recent posts...
Down to the river – Dömitz, Germany
Rivers are life, health, history, story, reflection, transmission, awe. They can be barriers and obstacles and boundaries, but more often they are corridors, portals, thin places or confluences.– Amy-Jane Beer, ‘What is a River?’ At dusk we walked down from the harbour in the small town of Dömitz to the Elbe. The harbour was at… Continue reading Down to the river – Dömitz, Germany
Sunrise on the Wannenkopf – Obermaiselstein, Allgäu
It was dark when we met in front of the cabin. Very dark. And very cold. The three of us looked at each other and without words managed to wonder whether this was such a good idea. The beds inside the hut were still warm. The cold was creeping into our bones. Was this really… Continue reading Sunrise on the Wannenkopf – Obermaiselstein, Allgäu
Postcard from The Winding Trail 10: Pokhara
A view across the water. Vultures circle. The sun shines on the snowy summit of Machhapuchhare. Trekkers rest their weary legs or get excited about their trip into the mountains. Our latest Postcard from The Winding Trail comes from Phewa Lake, Pokhara in Nepal. Our postcards are irregular email newsletters which combine original writing and… Continue reading Postcard from The Winding Trail 10: Pokhara
Being on the mountain – Varaldsøy, Norway
For the whole week the island was facing us across the Hardangerfjord. A solid lump, rising out of the black waters of the fjord, its cliffs at the northern end steep and severe as they dropped down to where the salmon farms raised their fish, sheltered by the steep walls of slate. We took a… Continue reading Being on the mountain – Varaldsøy, Norway
Adventure above the city – Bergen, Norway
In the cool air of a summer morning in Bergen, the streets around the university were quiet after the revels of the night before. It was the equivalent of freshers’ week in the Norwegian city, and our hotel had offered all guests free earplugs at the reception desk by way of advance apology. But where… Continue reading Adventure above the city – Bergen, Norway
A walk in the woods – Harz, Germany
It was only on the second day that it really felt like I had reached the forest. The track led out of the small town of Northeim in the middle of Germany - turning away from the Leine river that I had followed from Göttingen the day before - and aimed for the Harz. I… Continue reading A walk in the woods – Harz, Germany
First aid in the foothills – Gumlek, Nepal
Welcome to the jungle. The turn off from the dirt track led down onto a terrace carved from the hillside. The valleys of the central foothills of Nepal folded out in front of us until they reached the snow-covered peaks of the Himalaya in the distance. Our journey from Pokhara had taken about three hours… Continue reading First aid in the foothills – Gumlek, Nepal
To the hidden valleys – Veen Gardscamping, Norway
We’d chosen the campground using a combination of Google Maps and our Komoot app. Somewhere that was between where we already were and where we were going to. A place with enough little hiking figures marked on the app to suggest some good walks. A place by a lake, perhaps? And close enough to Preikestolen… Continue reading To the hidden valleys – Veen Gardscamping, Norway
The Outdoor Library – Part One
As much as we love the internet – for sharing our stories, for being inspired for future adventures and for planning our trips – there remains something special about unfolding a map or turning the first page of a book. We thought we would start to share some of our favourite books from our own… Continue reading The Outdoor Library – Part One
The road to Tangting – Kaski, Nepal
Prakash stopped the jeep about halfway up the track. A little break in the journey. We climbed out onto the rocky, uneven road and took in the view. The steep-sided valley with the Madi river somewhere down below where the morning sun was long to reach. A chain of villages strung out above terraces on… Continue reading The road to Tangting – Kaski, Nepal
