Art Show, Grace in the Plains

The annual Piedmont Regional Art Show is one of my favorites because it is in a lovely venue. This was a busy weekend, with a meeting at our state park yesterday morning, but I managed to make it to the Piedmont show yesterday afternoon and one in Berkeley Springs today.

Here’s a few pictures of yesterday‘s art show and be lovely church where it’s held.

Masonic Lodge in Waynesboro, Virginia

BERJAYA

When I spotted this building from across the street, I thought it must be a church. Then I saw that it is Lodge #209.

I don’t know if it was built as a masonic lodge or converted from a church.

Here is the building that is on the opposite corner, a hair salon. This style of butterfly mural is fairly popular in my area. You can pose between the wings to be photographed as a butterfly.

Iglesia El Calvario

Herndon, VA

BERJAYA
Iglesia = Church

BERJAYA

This was originally the home of the Herndon United Methodist Church. In 1987, they removed the stained glass windows in this Spring Street building and moved them to a new church.

It appears that the current congregation has services in Spanish.

Another Quaker Meeting House

Herndon, VA

This building is currently used as The Herndon Friends Meeting, but it was once the home of a women's club which established a library here. That group was called a fortnightly club, which was apparently a popular name used by women’s clubs in the 19th century.

A town historical marker tells the story.
“The Herndon Fortnightly Club was founded in 1869 by eleven women interested in studying literature, art, science, and the popular interests of the day. Early on, the Club decided to start lending books. By 1900 they had collected over 1000 volumes. Much of the collection was lost in The Big Fire of 1917. In 1927, the Club constructed this Greek Revival building to house the new collection. It became the Herndon Fortnightly Library, the first lending library in Fairfax County.”
Across the street from this building is the fire department, formed in 1917 after that “Big Fire” devastated the core of downtown.

Hopewell Friends Meeting House

Clear Brook, VA

Hopewell was the first Quaker meeting established in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Early Quaker settlers came from Maryland and built a log meeting in 1734. After it was destroyed by fire in 1757, the limestone building was constructed.

BERJAYAI found this building by checking the HMDB website for nearby historic sites when I was visiting Clear Brook Park. When I arrived here, I felt like I had been here before with Professor Poland's class. If it was not this Quaker Meeting, it was one that looked very much like it. But that was maybe 30 years ago.

The grounds feel very peaceful. The surroundings are rural.

For these final two pictures, I used an app give them a painterly look.

Old Chapel, near Boyce

This stone building sits at the intersection of Route 340 and Bishop Meade Road. It dates to 1790, and a log chapel was on the site before that.

Hospital D, A Church in Burkittsville

Antietam Campaign, 1862

Burkittsville is a charming small town in Maryland, not far from Frederick.

"Union surgeons turned Burkittsville, a quiet rural village of some 200 people, into a hospital complex after the September 14, 1862, Battle of Crampton’s Gap. The building in front of you, the German Reformed Church, was Hospital D."

You can read the rest of this marker on the Historic Marker Database.

A Church in East Moorefield

Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren

BERJAYA

When I spotted this church on a hill near the East Moorefield exit, I knew it must have a good view. It did not disappoint.
BERJAYA

The highway here is US 48/WV 55, also known as Corridor H. It goes west from Wardensville and it’s worth riding on just for the views.

I went to a Memorial Service in Winchester

Lighthouse Baptist Church

BERJAYA

On Friday there was a memorial service for my next-door neighbor, Susan. It was held at this church on Route 50..

She was a little younger than I am, but had heart trouble. I saw her from time to time, and also met her sister, who often came over to do things for her. Nice people.

On the way home, I stopped and got something to eat. I noticed these pretty roses. The last picture was an accident, taken when my finger slipped as I put the phone back in my pocket.

Rockland Community Prayer Garden

Rockland, near Front Royal

BERJAYA

Rockland is a village amidst farmland in Warren County. The Community Church there dedicated a prayer garden on Saturday. I stopped by late that afternoon to take a look. I plan to go back in the summer to see how the flowers are doing.

Hopping Bunnies and Rural Scenery

It was historic garden week in Virginia, and I spent three days touring in our beautiful piedmont countryside. I can only begin to show you some of the pretty sights. These were in Fauquier County, a peaceful area where even its many wealthy people take pride in its rural identity.

A stone church looked charming so I turned around to take a picture. This is Willisville Chapel, and it will be 100 years old next year. Its history goes back to shortly after the Civil War. It was organized as a Christian church for African-American citizens of various denominations. It is now a United Methodist Church.

As I headed toward home, the quiet was interrupted by a roaring sound. I had to wait for a freight train to pass. The box cars transform into truck containers in Front Royal.
