Momo and the Cat Tree
Momo is a calico cat in West Carrollton, Ohio. She's blind, but her family watches out for her diligently while enriching her life as much as possible. Her owner bought a cat tree and carefully guided Momo in learning how to use it, guiding her down step by step. Momo was eager to learn, and has since become rather adept at getting around the cat tree on her own. She doesn't use the cat tree unless someone is watching, and you might notice there are pillows on the ground just in case. This was not the first time she climbed down on her own, but it was the first time her human caught it on video. (via Laughing Squid)
Year-end Lists 2023: Books
Every year, I spend the week between Christmas a New Year's Day linking the lists that sum up the past year. There will be tons of links, and you are welcome to scan them and check out just the one or two that may be interesting to you -or skip these posts entirely if there's a subject you don't care about. The series always begins with books, because those lists are available earlier than others. We will also cover 2023 in science, politics, people, animals, the internet, and whatever else comes across my screen that may be worth passing along. Meanwhile, somewhere in here you might find a new book to read!

Cat Whips Tiger
This cat makes his feelings very clear to a stuffed tiger. The interloper is not welcome in his territory! Take that! And that! It’s pretty easy to make yourself dominant over an opponent that doesn’t fight back. Things would be a bit different it it was a real tiger. As it is, the tiger is not to scale. Fried Green Tomatoes
The 1991 movie Fried Green Tomatoes was based on Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It concerns women finding their power in a tiny town in Alabama. The story is told by Ninny Threadgoode 50 years later, so part of the story concerns different people in 1980s Birmingham. The star-studded cast includes Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Cicely Tyson.
He's 68% candy cane, 32% robot and 100% inspirational
Christmas tradition meets the world of high tech in this goofy animation. Why would someone want to make a robot out of a candy cane? Because it's Christmas, silly! What's unique about this robot is that it is sentient, and walks along the road, contemplating its own existence and its purpose in the world. I don't know how inspirational he is. His lonely journey as the first of his kind seems just a bit depressing, but still just goofy enough to make you smile. (via reddit)
The Intricacies of Christmas Movie Music
If you want your movie to scream CHRISTMAS! you have to have the music. That means the familiar songs we hear every year until our brains automatically make that association. That may be the reason that we don't think of Trading Places as a Christmas movie, despite the setting (except in Italy). It's just not infused with the songs of the season. To force that Christmassy feel, movies go to great lengths to put you in the musical mood.
Which songs are used in a Christmas depends on how much the rights are going to cost, and how much it's going to affect the overall movie budget. Vox explains how music is selected for Christmas movies, and why it's so important for the finished product.

Hallelujah Chorus (Lyric version)
It's possible that you love this song as much a I do, but I doubt it. Still, if you like the Hallelujah Chorus and realize you don't know the lyrics all that well, here's your chance to learn. The music is a recording, but these students from South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, Washington, illustrate the lyrics with a hilarious routine that still shows respect to the joyous song. This performance is from 2012, following in the footsteps of a previous performance at the same school in 2006 that went wildly viral. You may have to watch it more than once to catch how each student puts their own comedic spin on the routine.
And He shall reign forever and ever- Hallelujah!
