A Brio's Christmas

Usually when Christmas is coming, we buy Wolfie the Brio Advent Calendar. He loves it and it becomes an essential part of Christmas city. Well, this year, to my chagrin, our son only wanted a banal, "boring" chocolate Advent calendar. Not that we have nothing Christmas related Brio things. I only have to go through the Brio box to find them. It is like finding a needle in a haystack, but we get through. But it is worth the trouble: I mean just look at that festive locomotive. And that's just one thing. Brio has become as much a part of my Christmas as Wolfie's. Sometimes I think maybe I should ask for a Brio Advent Calendar.

Notre casse-tête de Noël

Un peu par hasard, j'ai commencé une tradition dans la famille. Depuis que j'ai acheté un casse-tête à mon frère PJ en 2019, mes parents font un casse-tête chaque année durant les Fêtes. La tradition se poursuit ici aussi. J'ai acheté un casse-tête à ma femme l'an dernier, un peu par hasard, sans savoir si elle allait aimer ça ou non. En fait, elle a un intérêt moyen pour les puzzles. Mais petit loup, lui, a décidé qu'il aimait vraiment ça. Alors l'an dernier, il a fait le casse-tête acheté pour sa mère. Puis il l'a fait encore cette année. Avec un peu d'aide de papa et maman, mais pas tant que ça.

Christmas at the bookshop

 'Tis the season to be reading, therefore 'tis the season to be buying books. You have read recently plenty of posts about my Christmas book shopping spree. I buy them for myself and for others. Here, we are lucky enough to have a local bookshop of decent sizes that is a real goldmine any other time of year, but especially during Christmastime. I intend to go back there this weekend and make a few purchases, for Wolfie in particular. And going there is also a lovely experience in itself: just look at the picture I took of their window. Don't you want to spend time there?

La pièce de Noël

Photo de la pièce familiale, je la partage ici car elle sert mon propos. Enfin, c'est lié un peu. Cette semaine, nous avons pu voir une crèche vivante. Enfin, façon de parler: petit loup a joué dans sa pièce de Noël, qui est bien entendu une pièce de la Nativité. Cette année, il faisait un berger. C'est je crois une promotion: l'an dernier il faisaitun chameau et l'année d'avant, un mouton. Mais il n'a guère aimé l'expérience. Nous ne savons pas trop pourquoi, mais il y est allé à reculon. Dommage, car je sais qu'il peut être un excellent acteur. Je le sais parce que: 1)des deux côtés de sa famille il y a des gens avec un talent pour le théâtre et 2)lorsque nous jouons à ses jeux de guerre, il peut faire plusieurs personnages avec des personnalités très différentes. Peut-être qu'il avait le trac, je ne sais pas. Ou alors son athéisme se manifestait par un dédain du sujet de la pièce. Enfin, c'est fini jusqu'à l'an prochain.

Condor and Christmas

'Tis the season to be watching, and listening. If, like me, you like watching movies during Christmastime that are seasonal but not too soppy or sugaree, I have a suggestion for you. I pretty much go for the same thing I would go all year long, but with a Christmas twist. And there is one film that could be considered a Christmas movie, because it is set during Christmastime. I am talking about Three Days of the Condor. For those who never watched it, stop reading now and do not watch the video in this post. Anyway, while the original novel, which differs significantly from its more famous adaptation, is set in a different time of year, Yuletide is definitely in the background of the film. And moreso in its last scene, which I am sharing today. It gives a definitely darker yet very realistic edge to the Season.

Parlons Ciné-cadeau

Bon, je sais que Ciné-Cadeau est commencé au Québec et comme à chaque année je le manque. Pour ceuxqui peuvent le regarder et qui le font: c'est comment cette année? Si je ne peux pas en profiter directement, j'ai quand même décidé, comme bien des Québécois expatriés, de me faire mon propre Ciné-cadeau ici. J'ai aussi fait découvrir à petit loup des classiques du temps où j'avais son âge, découverts grâce à Ciné-cadeau. Alors vraiment il ne manque que la neige ici et mon bonheur sera complet.

'Tis the season to be watching!

This has become a staple of our Christmases at home: the Christmas edition of Radio Times. I buy it every year we are here and this year is no exception. I found it on Monday night and got it right away. I don't watch all that much television during Christmastime, however I do love to have a reliable TV schedule and reading the articles and interviews of RT is part of the celebrations. You recognised on the cover Judith Kerr's Mog, who gets her own adaptation this year. I intend to watch it with Wolfie.

Gâteau aux fruits

 Photo prise par mon père, c'est un gâteau aux fruits du Mélèze. Acheté en 2020, je crois, ça date. J'ai blogué sur le sujet en 2021. Tout ça pour dire que le gâteau aux fruits l'un des desserts de Noël associé à mon enfance, mais que je ne mange plus vraiment ces temps-ci. Dans mes souvenirs, on en avait toujours au moins un par Noël, ou bien fait par mes parents, ou bien acheté. J'en ai acheté jusque dans les années 90 au moins. J'aimais surtout les grosses cerises confites au dessus du gâteau. Puis c'est devenu un dessert plus épisodique. En tout cas, il n'est plus un incontournable. Ma belle-mère, qui n'est pas forte des sucreries, en est pourtant très friande. C'est son dessert de Noël. Petit loup, lui, pas du tout. Il tient de moi: son préféré c'est la bûche de Noël je crois. Mais il en aime bien d'autres. Et vous, que pensez-vous du gâteau aux fruits? Pour, contre? Est-ce un incontournable des Fêtes chez vous?

An Italian Christmas

As I mentioned yesterday, I went to the local bookshop this weekend for Christmas shopping. And I behaved. Mostly. There was a section filled with Christmas literary anthologies and I could not help to buy one, An Italian Christmas: Festive Tales for La Dolce Vita. Which I am going to read, among other books, in the next few weeks. It is the same collection as the Scandinavian Christmas book I read the last two Christmases. They had others, but I refrained. I don't associate Christmas with Italy all that much, which might be something ironic to say for someone who was raised Catholic (even though I'm an apostate). For me, it is a Northern and Nordic celebration, with snow and fir trees and so on. But I love Italy (most of the time) and I am curious about the traditions we owe them. So I will read this eagerly.

Christmas Anthologies at the Bookshop

'Tis the season to be reading. And you may have noticed that so far this month, I have not given Christmas reading recommendations. There is a reason why: I have read and thus recommended most of the ones I have. But this may change. I went to the local bookshop recently and I mostly behaved. But I found a lot of Christmas anthologies. I could have bought them all, I wanted to buy them all, but I refrained myself and just mentioned them as present suggestions to my wife. So I bought only one, which was not Fill My Stocking. But I do hope Santa gives it to me this year.

L'Avent chez les Bouquinistes

Je voulais bloguer sur le sujet plus tôt, ça n'a pas adonné, mais mieux vaut tard que jamais. Enfin bref, tout ça pour dire que la librairie du Saglac Les Bouquinistes ont un calendrier de l'Avent littéraire. Ils font tirer un livre par jour jusqu'à Noël. Enfin je crois que c'est ça. Vous aurez plus de détails sur leur page Facebook.Moi je ne peux pas vraiment y participer, mais sijamais vous le pouvez, c'est vraiment le meilleur calendrier de l'Avent jusqu'ici.

Christmas Wreath

 My wife went to an art and craft workshop again yesterday. She made this Christmas wreath, which she hung outside the house. I have little else to say, but this marks the very first time that we have had Christmas decorations outside the house. Just for that reason it is worth mentioning. My father has one at home, bigger and with lights, so people can see it in the dark. But this wreath is really nice and I am very proud of the work my wife made, all by herself, so I am sharing it today.

Les beignes (encore)

 Photo prise par mon père lorsqu'il a fait les stocks de beignes pour Noël cette année. Je partage un peu pour faire de la food porn, un peu parce que je m'ennuie des beignes fait maison. Je voudrais être capable d'en cuisiner, mais on n'a vraiment pas la cuisine pour ça. Cuisinerpour Noël, c'est de l'ouvrage, encore plus cuisiner des desserts, encore plus cuisiner des beignes. Alors je prends l'option paresseuse et j'achète tout ce que je peux acheter. Je suis pas pâtissier, après tout. Mais je m'ennuie de toutes les recettes maison.

Christmas Gnomes

 My wife went to an art and craft evening with some friends last week. She does that sometimes. We spend a boy's night in Wolfie and I. When my wife came back, she had made these two gnomes. She used two old wornout  Christmas socks for the hats. Socks I bought her ages ago as Christmas present. I'm glad we granted them a second life. Anyway, these two fellas are our new Christmas ornaments. We haven't decided of a name yet. Please feel free to provide suggestions in the comments section.

Le Plateau et l'hiver

I missed Krampus Night

I learned yesterday that it was Krampus Night, a night dedicated to, well, Krampus, the Christmas baddie, enemy or at least adversary of Santa Claus. I understand this is a relatively new thing, maybe I'm wrong, but anyway, I am not sure if I will properly celebrate it, since I observe something else on the 5th of December and it has all my attention. But I thought I would mention its existence here. I love Krampus, it shows a more sinister side to Christmas. I wished I had knownhim when I was a child.

La Légende de Saint Nicolas

Nous sommes  la Saint-Nicolas , donc je partage l'une des légendes associées au saint, celle qui est si délicieusement sinistre. D'habitude, je partage la verison chantée, cette fois-ci, c'est une pièce de théâtre avec des marionnettes trouvée sur YouTube. Mozart: Requiem Aeternam

Here is a sad anniversary that I have to commemorate. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died on that date. As it is a tradition around the world, his Requiem is  played. We commemorate his death, we are still in grief, even centuries after his departure, but we celebrate his work. Mozart is eternal.
