The Festival of Lights
Hanukkah started on Sunday evening
and continues all this week.
Every year, I have to double-check
how to spell the name of this holiday.
Every single year.
Maybe this kid has the right idea --
Her Royal Highness the Cat
always laughs at me because
she knows how it's really spelled!
Happy Hanukkah / Hanukkat
to all who celebrate!

Time To Go A-Viking!
Norse News: Date for Norse activity in North America confirmed as 1021 CE!
After analyzing 14C concentrations in tree rings from wooden objects found at L'Anse aux Meadows, researchers have been able to conclude that the Norse were active in North America exactly 1000 years ago, in 1021 CE.
I've never been to
L'Anse aux Meadows
in Newfoundland,
but one of my travel goals
is to get there someday!
In the meantime, let's
celebrate our favourite
historical pagan ruffians!
And now, to conclude,
a public service announcement
from the Danish Road Safety Council --

Blogging buddy (The Gods Are Bored) Anne Johnson's daughter needs a lot of people to take a survey she created about news sources and late-night comedy shows. The survey only takes about five minutes and is found here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/
Although the survey is geared towards Americans, input is also welcome from Canadians and others.

November Full Moon Altar: Kali
November's full moon altar celebrates the Hindu Goddess Kali, Great Mother of All and Destroyer of Evil. She is one of several divinities honoured during Diwali, the joyful Festival of Lights which was marked earlier this month. So on this altar I have surrounded Kali with a string of mini-lights, a pair of white lotus votive holders and two ever-changing lotus devotional lamps displaying a sequence of bright fibre-optic colours.
With her golden diadem, necklace of human skulls, arsenal of weapons and fearsome visage, Kali dances the eternal dance of creation and destruction on top of the prone body of her husband, Lord Shiva the Destroyer. Wielding her Sword of Truth, Kali cuts through all illusion. People often seek her assistance when they want to overcome their worst fears.
My statue of Kali is carved from black stone. I bought her years ago in my favourite South Asian variety store here in Edmonton.

Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.
