sewing Saturday.... peach wine and ghosties

BERJAYA
to start this week, I finished the Bats and Boos quilt (pattern fatquartershop) complete with binding, sleeve and label. It's on the wall now. Earliest I've ever finished a halloween quilt!

Along with quilting straight lines to stabilize the quilt, the free motion quilting was leaves, vines and spirals

BERJAYA

BERJAYA
then some ghost buttons were added for fun texture
BERJAYA

can you find 6 of them?

BERJAYA

the backing was older holiday fabric, another to make a sleeve, and as it finishes at 40 1/4" square, was just a bit too large for my backing fabric

BERJAYA
I pulled the back around to the front while quilting, and liked the look, so I trimmed the top, pulled the back to the front and hand sewed it in place. On three sides, the top wasn't long enough so I put another fabric binding up there.

The color of the month at Soscrappy is orange so of course my mind turned to wine...

BERJAYA

I call this one peach wine since it's in a peachy fabric...

with an angel print for a label... "Heavenly Peach"?

BERJAYA

the second bottle is a darker orange fabric with a lovely horse print label...

BERJAYA

"stallion apple wine"  ?

the cellar is almost full, just 3 months of color to go, 6 more bottles at least

BERJAYA

I spent more time this week painting, the post with my paintings is HERE

BERJAYA

and watching elephants, puppies, donkeys and podcasts on youtube. oh and listening to pumpkin jazz

and writing posts, I Like list on Thursday, painting on Friday and today with you all...

BERJAYA
bye, y'all

"Halloween Row " quilt of 2020

BERJAYA
"Halloween Row"   21.5" X48"
This year's Halloween quilt, and I have done one each year since we got married (26 years) is done and hanging up on the wall!

BERJAYA
I am so happy with how it turned out!
I won't go into all the design decisions, but I started it a while back with Joy's magic circle blocks and my scrap bag of halloween scraps, just for fun!
BERJAYA
You never know what something will turn into! After I made them I started wondering what else I could put with them, and...

BERJAYA
I like how the quilting turned out, emphasizing the circle blocks.  I used metallic sparkly copper, blue, purple and black threads to quilt it so it shimmers in person. On the above photo look for applique ghosts and ghost button embellishments, bat appliques, and skeleton button
BERJAYA

I decided to use an older solid fabric for the backing, as I get precious about wall quilts and not using prettier fabrics on the backs  that are not meant to be seen. You can see quilting on solid though!

BERJAYA

You can see  I did use a cute scrap with tweety and sylvester for the sleeve however. I was going to bind it in black but changed to dark purple on sides, and a purple batik for top and bottom. Happy.

Then time for beading!!! I had all kinds of things I wanted to use for fringe.

BERJAYA
I use a thread made for quilting, a thin eyed longer needle and bury the knots. I looked thru my alphabet and couldn't find O's so I used Q's for the word BOO at the bottom, and got busy during a chat with Joy one afternoon. A zoom bee sort of!
BERJAYA

I had the cutest square sequins to scatter in the bottom row but decided it didn't add much

Detail shots of the fringe... skulls, hearts, gold balls and ghosts!

BERJAYA

BERJAYA

BERJAYA

hope you've enjoyed looking at this with me.

I learned how to make the little blocks and that I enjoyed orienting my scrap strips row by row...

I haven't done that before

I love using a collection in quilts! That I've done often, to see your pretty fabrics in one place. I love doing seasonal quilts too, and bringing them out every year.

Funny but each time I make one I say, this is my favorite!

now, on to the next to on the wall... I've been busy sewing borders on this week, piecing in those tiny geese units, keeping the color and scale balanced... more tomorrow on those. They came from the cut off half square triangle units from the lozenge blocks!

BERJAYA

you never know where one block will lead you!

sewing Saturday...snowballs in brown and Halloween

BERJAYA
Welcome to the sewing round-up for this week!
I've had a grand time in the studio sewing on my rainbow scrap challenge snowball blocks and this year's Halloween quilt.
BERJAYA
Hey! Stop looking at that wall and look at me!
First the snowball blocks... in brown not my favorite color but they are really attractive together, no?
BERJAYA
I included some multi-color on black background fabrics as neutrals.
BERJAYA
I have making them down to a science! I wonder if there will be any more colors suggested this year? This is only 10.
The Halloween quilt was so much fun to make, and started like this

BERJAYA

... with some little applique owls in cute halloween prints. Out came the scrap bag of fun prints and leftover blocks.
BERJAYA
The process for me was to fold the owls to approximate size, and start adding in little blocks, and squares, bits of fun color or motifs. Add a strip, then piece some blocks, make a paper pieced cat and a hat.
BERJAYA
The top is all ready to quilt now! 32" X 52" -ish
Add more, take away, this area needs a big piece, this one needs blue, a skinny strip of green, or a row of little pumpkins will fit. Hee hee! What fun! I kept adding til it turned itself into about three long rows, then made them into the same basic size.
BERJAYA

So the whole thing is so cute to me. I love:
the prints
the fence that comes and goes
BERJAYA

the words boo and Halloween
BERJAYA

tiny witches
 BERJAYA
the way the cat glows
The rayon florescent thread around owls
BERJAYA

and the general fun it was to make.
Now time to quilt it!
All that and some left over blocks as a starter for another project

sewing Saturday chandeliers and halloween

BERJAYA
hand sewing these hexie stars!
welcome to Sewing Saturdays.... I guess I divide my creative time between sewing, painting and writing with a bit of beading thrown in for measure. The above hexie star represents the hand work I do in the car or watching tv.
BERJAYA
The Rainbow scrap challenge color of the month is brown/black, so here's some chandelier blocks in both. For black I used my black with multi colors scraps.
BERJAYA
See the gray? it's my design wall, back in use since I got the lattice blocks all sewn together into three big sections, and off the wall!

More about that later.

BERJAYA
details of prints
BERJAYA
It's really fun to see the black with multi color prints, so since I only made 9 I may make a few more using those scraps. they'll blend in well. No idea how I'll set these.
BERJAYA

after I sewed the chandelier blocks, I put up the start to my halloween quilt. I'm not sure if I'll keep those backgrounds or how large they will be either. So many decisions!
BERJAYA
here they are with some ideas around them. So busy! I might have to seriously tone this down.
BERJAYA
paper pieced hat, and stamped collage
BERJAYA
paper pieced cat, and monkey wrench block
Don't know how I'll decide how large to cut the backgrounds, but I must because I want to do the fun embroidery around the appliques. Oh in my halloween stash was also two bags of white buttons, ghosts and skulls! Gotta put those in somewhere.
I'm torn about using owls for a fall fabric piece, or Halloween... I like it all.

Web of Fun... this year's Halloween quilt

BERJAYA
Look at all the fun fabrics! I make a Halloween quilt each year, and this post is about sewing again!
BERJAYA
web of fun   36" X 36"

The pillow kit got me going again in my new studio space.

I thought I should get the place organized first, so I knew where things were to use, but abandoned that in my need to "make"
BERJAYA

The pillow kit was the stimulus to sew, and expensive and incomplete as the kit was, it did that.
BERJAYA

On to the pattern I saw in Quiltmaker magazine in October 2018 issue, named SPOOKY
I chose about 4 patterns this year I wanted to try, and really I have no business trying to follow patterns. I'm much better at coming up with my own, but I've been experimenting with Dresden plates since the move to Colorado.
BERJAYA

Isn't it intriguing how some ideas stay just that, plans, and some get made into art?
BERJAYA

this moved from should do to gotta do because
1. I could use my cool Halloween fabric collection and show them off
2. I knew where they were
3. It's just under 40" square, so small enough to finish for this year, since I started it a week before Halloween!
4. I knew how to do it, but it had a twist on the trad pattern, so that would be fun
BERJAYA

Into the fray, I pulled out all the possible fabrics, and bought a few fresh ones this year, and needed 12 for the blades, the focus. Because they are pretty busy designs, and all want to be the stars, I had fun choosing which ones would go together best in this one little quilt. I tried to get a mix of some purple, some lime, some black, some cream. Then tried to get a mix of some witches, some ghosts, some skeletons, and some pumpkins. I loved the new fabrics with big bold designs like the crystal ball.
BERJAYA

I cut one blade and put it on the design wall, then went light dark around. I paid attention to cutting the blade to maximize the design I wanted (fussy cut) and the angle it would be in the finished quilt, for instance I didn't want the witches flying upside down if possible.

By the end of the first afternoon I had all the blades cut and arranged, at which point the wall blew over and tumbled my careful placement to the ground. Grrr. But by stopping point I had the blades sewn to make the points. The next morning I sewed all blades together, and sewed the plate to a black background along the ditches outward.
BERJAYA

Now I had to decide to follow the pattern and fold the curves outward to round out the scallops or press them inward so as not to change the look of my cool fabrics. I decided inward then quickly learned why the pattern called for pressing to the front. Seam allowances on the blade points are thick and hard to press another layer under.

Not one to give up, I spritzed with water and bent them to my will. I decided to release perfectionism and not worry about perfect points on each blade as I got the look I wanted by doing it this way.
BERJAYA

Plus I knew the quilting process could define the points and most viewers look from about 12" away at most and wouldn't notice a slight bump... nor would I when it was done. I would notice the cool fabrics and now they weren't disturbed by a visible folded edge.
BERJAYA

As to the borders, I had to decide, after the plate was carefully sewn with curves to the background with a straight stitch, whether to go with tasteful or wackadoodle. Both looked good to me, but I kind of wanted the center fabrics to stand out so I went with an older Hoffman celestial print. I've had this a long time, and get weird about using good fabrics in a quilt just for me, that won't be shown anywhere but after moving it all here, I realized, I have to let go and enjoy them whenever I want.

Know what I mean?

I am quilting it with sulky hologram mylar thread in silver.

BERJAYA
It's very strong, unlike other sulky thread, and well behaved on quilts.

I went along each blade and off on the points as a start to quilting the web along the black outside edges.
BERJAYA

Last night I looked at spider web images online, and want to decide whether or not to do that in my background. I don't want the focus pulled out too much. And will I keep the webby look into the border?

It's the day before Halloween and I like to make things with colors of the actual season, so I don't plan too much ahead. Next up will be my abstract fall colors piece. Then in December I might do a Christmas colors piece, even if it's not done for this Christmas.

I like using colors I see around me at the moment, are you like that?

the back was some Halloweend fabric I don't love, truth is it's kind of frightening
BERJAYA

the binding will be some precious black fabric shot through with metallic gold
BERJAYA

My snooper-visor is exhausted of all the decisions he's been called on to make...
BERJAYA

but it's been worth it to sew again!
