White, or maybe, pink, rabbits

November seems to have arrived, so it's White Rabbits again. Handsome Son brought over a box of possible free cycle items which I'd offered to take care of, including this rather shabby and repaired pink rabbit.

He explained he'd found it years ago at the dumpster and didn't have the heart to leave it abandoned! After a cleanup, it might move in here, to join the other rescued bears, a bit too shabby to free cycle, and people don't usually want stuffed toys.

I haven't looked through the rest of the box yet.

We had a great visit, despite the doorbell going many times, although the pumpkin and cat were indoors, porch lights off. Gary called to ask me to do his Halloween for him! I explained that I don't do Halloween, and he said oh you don't like going to the door? I thought that was good enough, though it's not quite the reason, and he accepted it.

Not a peaceful evening.  Handsome Son has been planning an easy Thanksgiving for us, so he's got that in hand. And he replaced my front door curtain with the red felt winter one. He also polished off the rest of the cranwal loaf and really liked it. So chickpea flour is good in baking. I think I'll use it in bread, too. All in all, good.

Earlier I'd made the Firefighters Chili from the World Central Kitchen cookbook, this time no ground turkey in the house, so it has everything else.  You really need cornmeal which I didn't have, to thicken it, and I subbed chickpea flour. It worked great, so I'm making a note on that page, which already shows evidence of being open while I cooked..

Happy day, everyone, rain again here. Time to start thinking about those skirt panels I'm weaving again. The weather's up for warmer clothes, and so am I.

The monstera moves in

So, after all the work I did, rehabbing Gary's plants for him, giving him my afternoon, like a nice neighbor,  the excitable person across the street gets him all worked up about the toxicity of the monstera plant. He's easily convinced, being very protective of Billy the Pup, though I doubt if there's much danger.  Most houseplants are toxic to some extent, but few are lethal.

Anyway the upshot is that the giant monstera, seen here second from left, has moved in here.

I spent a long time getting it straightened after all its travels had knocked it sideways, and staked up.  So here it is. For now anyway. I hope Excitable Lady doesn't get him all upset about the other plants, because I'm not taking them!

Handsome Son is visiting today, so he'll get the rest of the cranwal etc bread, which I put in the freezer for this purpose, otherwise it would be gone. I'm glad to have his company this afternoon, then Textiles and Tea, which will help with the day.

I hate Halloween, for reasons having to do with the ghoulish aspect and PTSD, so for me it's a day to get through. Our current population hasn't grasped the convention that door closed, porch lights off, means this house doesn't do Halloween, so it may be a bit disturbed. But, as they say of other special days, it's only one day.

Last night I put the heating on for the first time, since the temps are down to the thirties overnight. This may be a record late date, though October is usually a no heat no cooling month, always welcome for the budget.

And here's a pertinent Haggard Hawks puzzle

happy day everyone, enjoy it or get through it,  whichever is on your agenda.

School colors, Sock Ministry and the Provincial Lady

These are off to the PO this morning for the Sock Ministry

BERJAYA

Then on to the next socks.

Yesterday I walked to the park for a change, and noticed that the entrance to my development is planted in my old school colors, maroon and gold. The camera doesn't handle reds well. I didn't handle the colors well, though they suited my coloring. Wearing them day after day for seven years gets old.

On the way down the street is a bed of marigolds alive with bees and wasps, going pretty late this year

The little flock of warblers is still active, flitting up and down the street via shrubs. There must be good insect hunting.

The park was lovely, a few walkers and young basketball and soccer players.

And my current reading is the perennially funny Provincial Lady, all of which series I have permanently on Kindle

Wry and funny, great character sketches. I've never looked for an audio version because I don't want my imagined voice trespassed on.

And I just came upon this

And it's Halloween, which to me is very different from partying, more of a quiet, prayerful day about the dead who've gone before us and a hope for  calm.  Interestingly, Christie's Hercule Poirot says something much the same. I was surprised that Christie knew of that religious aspect.

But some people party, so

Happy day everyone, however you spend it.
