The Big Flood of 1906

The Big Flood happened in Hyde in 1906.

A violent thunderstorm struck on May 8th and five inches of rain fell in five hours.

I've previously shown here photographs of the destruction at Newton Bank Printworks and at the James North Works.

I am grateful to Graham Hadfield for sending me this image that shows the big damage caused to Thornley & Booth's solicitors offices.

The firm survived and today are known as Booth, Ince & Knowles (established 1872) and you can see their present day office on Hyde DP Xtra.

Children's Day

In 1931 Hyde was celebrating fifty years of incorporation as a Borough. Children aged three to fifteen had been given a jubilee medal and some chocolate.

June 16th was declared Children's Day and some 4000 marched to the Town Hall to sing hymns and the National Anthem.

As can be seen by the plethora of umbrellas, it was not a sunny day.

Newton Bank Printworks

1906 Flood Damage at James North Works

This is Old Hyde's 50th post.

There is a "water" theme amongst CDPB bloggers today. So where's the water here? Well it is April 1st, so maybe I'm fooling you! But if you are reading this after 12 noon then the joke will be on me.

Here the water has been and gone. In May 1906 Hyde suffered severe flash floods. This picture shows the damage caused at the James North Works.
