Charge of the Hyde Brigade
Charge of the Hyde Brigade
HYDE v. DENTON
PLAYED AT WALKER FOLD, HYDE
1887.
HALF-A-FIELD, Half-a-field,
Half-a-field onward,
Into the Denton goal
Our forwards they thundered,
Stormed at with shot and shell,
*Lowe bravely fought and well,
But down went his citadel,
And *Denton folks wondered.
Wondered how it was done,
Wondered to see the fun,
Wondered whom Bunyan
Had thrown o'er his head;
Didn't they rave and rant,
'Twas their beloved *Plant,
Into the mud thus sent,
As though he were dead
.
Hark ! how they yell and scream,
Little did Denton dream
That our respected team,
Would conquer them so !
Now all their gas has gone,
And ready brass they've none,
A dollar, alas ! not one
Of them can show.
Hark ! to that deafening roar
Proclaiming the fight is o'er !
And likewise the fact that four
Goals have been got.
Denton have lost the day,
And as they wend their way
Homewards, they seem to say
Sad is our lot.
Now they are put to rout,
And as they face about,
Twenty-six none they shout,
Poor Dentonians.
Do not your fingers flirt,
For with your Sunday shirt
Hyde has wiped out the dirt
Rubbed in by Prestonians.
Pity poor Denton's plight,
Oh ! what a mournful sight
As they went home that night,
Vanquished Dentonians.
Honour the Hyde Brigade,
Honour the win they've made,
When will their glory fade?
Noble Hydonians !
*Lowe and Plant were Denton players,
Hyde start their second season in the Conference League away to Forest Green Rovers this weekend... Good Luck to all involved.
Just for the ones who like their United's a nice shade of Red ;O)

Hyde United Centenary Match
Most people know about Hyde United's (then Hyde FC) claim to fame being beaten 26-0 in the FA Cup by Preston in 1887 - It is still the biggest-ever defeat in English football !!
In 1988 there was a replay at Ewen Fields to mark the clubs centenary.
Here is a scan of the souvenir programme.
It notes Sam Allardyce (West Hams Manager) and Frank Worthington (former player of many professional clubs) as Preston Northend players.
Unfortunately, I cant remember the score if anyone out there can help,
please comment.

Programme from Hyde United
Following on from the post about Hyde United the day before yesterday, here is a match programme from a game between Hyde United and Winsford United in 1958.
I wonder what the score was?

I love the old adverts that you find on the old programmes.
I also like the simple telephone number, Hyde 30.
So much easier to remember than todays long mobile numbers !!

A map showing where Rhodes Street North was. It was the next street to Ann Street, off Manchester Road.. Rhodes street is opposite.

Hyde FC revisited.
A postcard showing the Hyde FC team of the season 1913/14.

Hyde FC were formed in 1885 the club changed its name to Hyde United in 1919, before reverting to Hyde FC in June 2010.
*Historian Tom Middleton has said the club began at Walker Fold on the old Hyde Rugby Club field but the North Cheshire Herald refers to a ground off Mottram Road. Hyde F.C. later moved to Townend Street but moved to Ewen Fields in 1906 after merging with Hyde St George's who played in the Lancashire Combination league. The club folded in 1917 during WW1 on the grounds of what was termed war reaction. When the conflict ended, demands were made to resurrect the club. Although the "new" club was called Hyde United (to avoid incurring the old club's debts), it was effectively Hyde FC under a new name and included many of the former players.
*Thanks to Wiki .

Hydes Town Team.
We recently received this email from Gill Anderton. It is regarding a group who wish to get Hyde Town Centre back to its prosperous days of old.
Over to Gill...
"There is a meeting to be held at Hyde FC Social Club, Walker Lane on
Wednesday 22 Aug at 6pm. They want to set up a Hydes Town Team (as
suggested by Mary Portas' Review) to help revive towns like ours who are
seeing ever more empty shops, and want to bring back the community into the town centres and help them prosper again.
If you know any business person who would be interested, please let them know.
(See Mary Portas Review on Google).

Thanks for letting us know,Gill ! :)

Hyde (United) FC
We recently posted some photographs of Hyde FCs triumphant tour of the town on an open-top bus following their success in winning the Blue Square North title.
I came across the following newspaper cutting showing an earlier successful trophy-winning season for the team when still known as Hyde United FC.

Hyde FC Open top bus parade around Hyde
Some photos of Hyde FC on their open top bus parade through Hyde.
These are taken from near the Shepherds Call on Market Street !
Thanks to Dave for these photos!
This one was taken as they passed Lilly Street.
Nice to see the trophy held aloft! (It's a bit blurred as the sun was behind the bus).
If anyone has any more please send them in to us so we can show them :)

The Day Hyde FC Lost 26 - 0
Hyde FC hold the dubious record for the biggest ever competitive defeat in English football when they were beaten 26–0 by Preston North End in a match at Deepdale in 1887. Deepdale is recognised as the oldest professional footballing site in the world so if Hyde FC were going to lose properly then why not here!
Here is a newspaper cutting describing the game. The cutting is from the newspaper ,The North Cheshire Herald ,or just plain old Reporter to most , dated October 1958.
Sorry about the quality but remember it's over 50 years old!
Thanks to Helen Hodkinson for allowing us to use this. It's very much appreciated.
Below is extracts from the Souvenir Programme
PRESTON 26 – HYDE 0
Anyone with an interest in football is able to reel off certain facts. They can tell you the first winners of the FA Cup, the record goal scorer for their team, who got the most caps for England etc.etc. A special favourite however is Hyde’s 26-0 defeat at the hands of Preston North End 100 years ago, on October 15th, 1887. The game was played at Deepdale and has taken on legendary proportions. People will tell you that Hyde’s players were drunk or that the referee lost track of time, but press reports of the time bear out none of this. Preston, just about the best club in the world at that time wanted the game played in midweek so they could complete their scheduled fixture with West Bromwich. Hyde declined, so the ‘Invincibles’ fielded their strongest side. A match report would be pointless – those published merely gave a list of who scored each goal. For the record, Dewhurst got 3, Drummond 2, Jimmy Ross 7, Graham 2, Thomson 4, Gordon 5, Jack Ross, Russell and Goodall got 1 goal each. The half time score was 12-0. There is evidence that the first substitute appeared in the match… even if he was illegal and unofficial. After the 3rd goal in the 17th minute Hyde’s centre-half ‘Bowers’ left the pitch injured. Later another player took his place, against the rules, but Preston were not complaining …. They were winning 12-0! Astonishingly, Hyde’s best player was goalkeeper Charles Bunyan who is reported as having been “a clinking good opponent”. Later he became a coach in Belgium and was a major force in establishing soccer there. Hyde did eventually get their revenge in 1891, winning 3-1.
Extract from the Reporter, October 16th, 1987.
