A Korean holocaust exists today, and it makes me feel so sad and helpless. It is believed that about 150,000 people . . . men, women and CHILDREN live in labor camps scattered throughout North Korea. They are forced into hard labor, starved, and tortured. Shin Dong-Hyuk was born in Camp 14 and never knew that another type of life existed until a new prisoner secretly told him of life beyond the wires. Weary of the beatings and the starvation and after being forced to witness his mother and brother being executed, he decided to attempt an escape.
He might be the only person to have ever successfully done so. You can read about his story here. He is also the subject of a book called Escape from Camp 14.
We had a busy day today. We went to put flowers on Grandpa's grave.
We also took Aunty to the zoo. I think she had a good time. She loves animals.
Her favorite are the elephants.
Here's my favorite animal from today. It's a bird that I never noticed before. He was showing off his feathers to a zookeeper who was in his cage replenishing food. Cool yah!
We picked up lunch from Serg's Mexican Kitchen in Waimanalo. Everything was good.
This year, Special Olympics Hawaii introduced a one-day Young Athlete Program at the State Summer Games this past weekend. The Young Athlete Program is designed to introduce activities that help with the development of motor skills and socialization through play. Parents were invited to bring a child between two-and-a-half to five years of age, with or without an intellectual disability. It was free and all participants received a Young Athlete Program Mattel T-shirt and healthy snacks.
After spending some time with the cute little kiddies I went to check out the track and field and swimming events. I only lasted for a little while before I got pooped out. I left a little after Erick arrived. Make sure to check out his photos.
We had a curry cookoff at work yesterday. All of the entries were so ono, it was really hard to choose a favorite. For $5 we got to eat all we wanted and then we could vote for our favorite. The cook of the winning curry got to keep the money.
This is Lorna's Japanese style curry. Leslie's Chicken Tikka Masala with Basmati Rice and Naan Bread. It's kinda messed up because I couldn't wait to taste it.
Susie's Thai Green Curry.
CQ's Chicken and Salmon Curry with Mandarin Orange.
Jay's Hot Pepper Curry
This is the winning dish. Ronnie's Thai Curry with Sticky Rice.
Here's Ronnie's recipe that he put together for me last night. Thanks Ronnie!
