I wish to apologize to anyone who may be having trouble making comments on my posts. I appreciate your visit so much, and wish I could read what you have to say, but something is going on with my computer, and until I can get the issue addressed, this may continue. Please keep visiting! Also, often I cannot make a comment on some posts I look at, particularly those who ask for me to show I am a guest. I have noticed sometimes someone can only comment in the "Reply" section of another comment...if that's all that works, then that's fine! Let's keep visiting no matter what happens, and know we are touching each other with our creativity and thoughts and images even when we can't get (or leave) feedback. God bless you my dear blogger friends!

The plant side of things

OK, when I had my last birthday and we were still in Virginia, my brother had given me a wonderful gift card for Amazon and one of the books I bought was a book on foraging: The Forager's Harvest, A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting and Preparing Edible Wild Plants, by Samuel Thayer.   I LOVE plants, especially native plants, herbs and wildflowers, and this book is a gem, with photos and detailed information, focusing on all the great foraging one can do....in the woodlands and wetlands of the east coast.  I absolutely ate it up, learning about tuckahoe (arrow arum) and wild rice....only to leave for Arizona a couple of months later where I might find some wapato or arrowhead plant up in the mountains but where no tuckahoe ever thought about growing!  :-)  Wow...talk about switching gears! THESE are the plants we see every day...various cactus in our daughter's front yard, including a couple of barrel cactus that were encouraged to bloom because of the summer monsoon rains....(click on any views to make them larger)

All so very beautiful...in a vastly different way.  And many with their own foraging properties.  These prickly pear fruits of course can be eaten.  When we lived here before I made prickly pear jelly and also a kind of chow-chow out of these fruits.  They are covered in tiny stickers that are harder to deal with than the larger spikes on the leaf part of the plant.  I plan to use a little blow torch to burn them off when I deal with them now....we had those tiny things all over us in my last endeavors, and they were in the carpet...it was torture! :-)  But, I think a little creme brulee torch will do the trick...I'll let you know.  Other cacti are good for eating the fruit, or cutting into for water in a survival situation.  And I have learned that the beans of the very prolific mesquite tree are completely edible and have a honey-like taste!  Plan to get a cookbook of recipes, and I will be sharing some of what I learn about doing that, as well!  In the meantime, there are the plants we grow....

OK, here's the other part of the plant story...how I have been dying to have my own place again so I could start a garden.  I borrowed my brother's book Square Foot Gardening, by  Mel Bartholomew (a Rodale book) and was so ready!  And, then (again....) we moved to Arizona!  There is NO dirt here, only desert sand.  OK, so you can do square foot gardening in raised beds with store-bought plus compost-enriched soil in containers.  Water....another issue.  OK, there are rain barrels one can put out during the monsoon season, and heck, you can always reclaim some of your grey water!  And the sun....BRUTAL!  But, if you play your cards right, and protect the plants part of the day, one can be overjoyed to discover---HEY, the growing season here is about 300 days a year!  So.....Two months ago, I started my seeds in little peat pots covered with plastic wrap, and started watering everything twice a day, moving the shelf in and out of the sun.  By the way, those two taller plants on the shelf are the plumeria cuttings Mom gave us when I left.  They spent two weeks in the back of our car with no dirt and no water, with their sticky resiny ends just inside a plastic bag, and when I arrived here, I potted them.  Years ago, I sent Mom such a cutting from Texas in the mail with instructions for her to stick it in a pot of dirt.  Hers didn't even have the beginnings of leaves.  It was just a stick, and looked like a weird Mother's Day gift.  But, oh how that tree grew, and every year bloomed and bloomed!  So....

BERJAYA
And here are the squash plants, sprouted, rooted and repotted into larger pots....They have blooms!
BERJAYA
And here are the basil!  Plus, on the far left is a turnip plant, and on the far right, a mesquite seedling that came up in an empty pot of dirt!
BERJAYA
This is the okra!!!!  Aren't okra plants gorgeous!  I love their blooms, too, but that lies ahead.  The taller plants on either side are two sunflowers that I grew for our grandson, but some kind of little black bug comnpletely stripped them of leaves!!!!  I am only using soapy water for a deterrent.  The bugs never touched the okra, and now I think I have them under control, but all that's left of the sunflowers are two very distressed flowerheads that may or may not bloom!
BERJAYA
And here is what the plumeria looks like today!
BERJAYA
Plus, some of the basil we repotted and brought inside to our daughter's kitchen window.  We've used the leaves several times already for spaghetti!
BERJAYA
And, by the way, we also planted the top of a pineapple and it is doing fine.  Plus I have a number of little sweet pepper plants as well.  So far so good!  And very SOON now I can get my square foot garden started, because GUESS WHAT!!!!!  yesterday we signed a lease!  Yay!  We'll be moving into our new hose in the next couple of weeks!!!!  More to come....

Gotcha!

Aha!  Finally got a shot of the little guys!  Not so little anymore; they are almost grown.  The day our grandson and I chased them through two yards and back behind the house trying to get a good picture, we never could capture the little guys.  But here they are in the front yard again, enjoying all the bugs.

Gates Pass

BERJAYA
Not long after we got here, we took a short drive to Gates Pass, a pass through the mountains near the Western section of the Saguaro National Park and also not far from Old Tucson and the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum.  There is a wonderful view.

Hubby still had the beginnings of a beard he was considering keeping...but shaved it off a few days later.  No sense in having extra facial hair in this heat!

Son-in-law and grandson headed off to do some exploring, but our s-in-l managed to lose his footing and slide down the bank of the hill.  He was injured, and his shoes were not giving him decent purchase on the loose rocks, so he had a terrible time re-climbing the embankment!

BERJAYA

Until that happened, it had been a pleasant outing.  We used to come here years ago, and it was nice to re-connect.  Boy, we can't wait to do more when the weather is a little cooler in the fall....I'll be posting lots of pics!

Three Wonderful Reasons!

BERJAYA
This is our sweet grandson.  He was listening for cicadas in the back yard.  Being with him means more than I can adequately express!  It had been too long!

BERJAYA
Playing in the muddy mess he made filling the dog's water bowl. :-)
BERJAYA
This is a photo he took of a quail perched on the back fence.  He was also perched on the back fence, and I was holding him steady from behind.
BERJAYA
BERJAYA
There were nine cute baby quail as well, but we chased them down and still couldn't get a decent shot!

And here are the other two reasons we are here!

Our daughter and son-in-law headed out for dinner....

Here is our daughter wearing the Diane von Furstenberg dress her aunt gave her.  She isn't just beautiful on the outside, she is a beautiful person inside and out!
BERJAYA
Yep, we have three great reasons to be here.....

St. Phillip's Plaza

When at last we arrived in Tucson it was with great relief to finally be here...we had been on the road for 6 days!  We made several stops, one to visit dear friends in Mississippi and we hated to move on after that short visit...we also had stopped in TX per the previous post.  But, at last we were here!  After about a week, our son-in-law took us to St. Phillip's Plaza to see where the new restaurant is going to be!  It's called Union Public House, and will be opening (projected date) on October 5th!  He is the Chef for this wonderful new place to eat, as well as partial owner, and our daughter will be the Pastry Chef in training!  It is an exciting new move for their family, and we are so happy for them!  Here are the son-in-law and grandson at their approach Union when we arrived at the Plaza.

BERJAYA
The Plaza is GORGEOUS!  It is located in the North Central area of Tucson, just at the beginning of the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.  Inside a lot of work was going on to remodel the restaurant space.
BERJAYA
The beautiful plaza! Notice the statue of St. Phillip. I even noticed crepe myrtle trees which are so common back in Virginia and throughout the south!

On Sunday mornings St. Phillip's Plaza hosts a Farmer's Market which was just lovely.  Unfortunately for us church-goers, it breaks up around 12 or 1 because of the heat.  I have to look for another one that happens on Saturdays somewhere here in town.  But I sure enjoyed seeing as much as I did while we were there that morning....

The son-in-law with some vendors....and below, ice cream pops made with prickly pear fruit juice.  Yum! :-)  Boy, has our world changed!  We lived here when our daughter was real small, and it feels so strange to be living here again....more on our new experiences in future posts!  And, I'll definitely be posting more about the restaurant too!

Not Bad!

For out the car window with one hand while driving!  These were the first dramatic changes on the trip...that told us we were nearly there....First, a shot of Austin as we whizzed through....

BERJAYA
Then, the scenery started getting so amazing west of Las Cruces, NM....

BERJAYAI couldn't figure out what this was at first, but Russell, in the truck in front of me said, it's that fire we've been hearing about on the news.  The picture hardly captured what we were seeing.
BERJAYAThe sky was so beautiful once we passed that sad scene....the sun gleaming down through the clouds.  I captured one quick shot with our Penske truck ahead of me on the road.  Almost to our new home.....
