Spain’s Repsol will put the returns a renewable power project can deliver above any capacity targets when making investment decisions, its CEO said this week. Presenting a strategy update for 2024-27, Josu Jon Imaz did not go as far as to say Repsol's 20 gigawatt target for 2030 had been dropped, but emphasized that the company was not bound to it... [INTERVIEW] The Energy Transition from Hitachi's Vantage Point | Best known for technology and industrial products including electrical equipment, trains, nuclear reactors, computers and consumer electronics, Hitachi is increasingly focused on the energy transition, which is providing a significant part of its growth. “We're really committed to continue to invest in that business for the future,” Alistair Dormer, the company’s executive vice president of energy and mobility, tells Energy Intelligence in an interview. While nuclear fusion and solar may be the only thing the world will need in 60 or 70 years, “we're a long way from that,” and in order to get there, will require a complete mix of renewables and fossil fuels with carbon capture, according to Dormer. “We need an element of hydrogen, we need solar, we need wind, we need onshore, offshore. And all of that needs to be connected, because the demand is just going to continue to grow,” he adds — with Hitachi expecting demand for power to triple in the next 10 to 15 years. Our Take: Prepare for an LNG Glut Leading LNG players remain bullish on the super-chilled fuel, but we believe looming oversupply in the second half of the decade throws up challenges for suppliers and a potential opportunity for long-term buyers. While the picture is complicated by several factors, including the US pause on approvals for new export projects, we see a new wave of supply pushing Northeast Asian spot LNG prices down to $7 per million Btu in 2026, less than half last year’s average. Does the imposition of sanctions against vessels carrying Russian barrels, and the subsequent efforts to bypass them, constitute "a new normal reality"? Sanctions might have had a limited impact on the volume of Russia's oil sales, but they have caused additional headaches for the country's exporters. The measures have increased their transportation costs and put them in a less advantageous position in commercial talks with customers. Given that the sanctions were designed to maintain Russian oil flows on global markets at the same time as reducing the proceeds from those exports, they have seemingly reached their target. Plans to reach net zero on Sakhalin Island by the end of 2025 remain unchanged despite the upheavals that Russia has been facing as a result of its war in Ukraine. The target is in line with a carbon management experiment launched more than two years ago in the territory in Russia's Far East with the aim of preparing the country's economy for the climate challenges ahead.
