More Work in the Soap Room

31 Oct

I did spend some more time working in the soap room this weekend.  I did take less of a marathon approach this weekend.  Saturday, I did the prep work.

I got all my milk cubes emptied and cleaned up.  I’ll know soon whether or not I need to freeze more, but I’m good for now.

BERJAYA

That’s a lot of trays–holds about 2 gallons.

I will say, whoever thought putting this fat (solid at room temperature) in this pourable bag should be fired.  Seriously.

BERJAYA

Anyhow, I got it all prepared.

Then I made three batches of soap on Sunday.  There was just too much going on for me to get it all done in one day.

BERJAYA

Plum Tea, Eden’s Garden, and Oatmeal and Honey

Hopefully, I’ll be able to find some time in the evenings this week to make these last few batches.

My “to-do” corner

I’m still knitting to have things for sale in the soap room this winter also.

BERJAYA

I finished this set.

I never know who’s going to help with my knitting.

Rocky while I was making a mitten.

Although it can be dangerous to sit on my lap when I have the double pointed needles going.

The project next weekend will be lotion (assuming the rest of the soap is done by then).  And I still want to make a batch or two of lip balm.  I need more hours in the day (or retirement ;-))

A Week of Watching

30 Oct

Goats have a three week heat cycle.  That means this week is when the girls will come back into heat or I’ll know they settled for spring break kids.  In theory.

Bubbles was in with Frodo

Perdita actually came into heat and I put her with BJ before I mixed everyone else.  So far, she hasn’t come back into heat (but it sometimes isn’t exactly three weeks).

Pretzel was next.  She would come into heat today (in theory).

Then it was a crazy mess of hormones.

But I also have those girls who haven’t been normal.  Ostara acted like she was in heat about three times in two weeks.  I have no idea what’s going on with her.

Joy was kind of like that, but not near as bad.

I will definitely have to keep an eye on them.

Not Ready for the Cold

29 Oct

Well, we really got pretty cold Friday night.  I’m not sure we really got the freeze they were predicting (and my outdoor thermometer said we did).  There was not a bit of ice in any of the water outside.  And my herb garden looks perfect yet. Even this morning though, after I did have slushy water in the buckets, the herb garden looks fine.

BERJAYA

so many roses yet

Well, except the bird feeder that got blown over in the strong south winds.  I’m really going to have to figure out how to keep them standing until the ground freezes.

BERJAYA

the birds have messed with my mulch (and their seed is growing)

Now the winds are still strong, but they are coming from the north.  I did take a minute to close the windows in the bird’s pen and also the sliding door on the lean-to where the goats and llamas are.

BERJAYA

Athena appreciated the door being shut to block the wind.

Some goats are round and fuzzy and don’t seem to notice that it suddenly turned cold.

The llamas are both nice and wooly now too.

Others are not happy with the sudden change.

Miss Goose likes it when I can give her some corn before the goats come up from pasture.

She likes her corn.

I’m pretty sure I’m with Gabe–we need a more gradual switch to winter.
