Speaking of frauds ...

While I was picking up my new glasses at Costco, received a call from a man who sounded a little Nigerian from Bank of America informing someone was trying to take $1,000 and $2,000 from my account in a Houston location. After I asked him to repeat it many times, so I could understand what he was saying, I told him I did not know that person, and to refuse payment. Then he said, If you can just open you banking app on your phone for some security questions, at which time I told him I had no banking app on my phone and I was going to go home, call the bank from there. He said, we will not be able to cancel the transaction without these security questions and I hung up on him. Of course, I immediately called 800 for bank but could not get through. While trying to check out, my card was declined because I had made that phone call. But I got a text asking if that was me, making this charge at Costco, type YES to have payment approved.

Got home, checked my account online while I dialed the Bank 800, I saw no withdrawals. The rep said it was fraud. Which is what I thought. I know we would all like to see it in person, alas, I won't be there.  People are so sick. And spend so much energy just trying to steal money.

And speaking of frauds ...

CPAC Was a Janky Half-Empty Trump Convention

BERJAYA

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was once a marquee event on the political calendar where Republicans seeking the favor of the party’s conservative base would attempt to woo a crowd of right-wing activists and diehards. In 2015, the last time there was a competitive Republican presidential primary, a dozen candidates showed up, representing all wings of the party from Chris Christie to Ted Cruz. And they weren’t the only ones there, it was a marquee event for the entire right-wing ecosystem with seemingly every group represented. Eight years later, the vibe was entirely different. The 2023 CPAC felt like a mall after all but one of its big department stores has shut down — an emptier, jankier, lower-rent version of conferences past. The rooms were more deserted, the vendors more downmarket, and speakers a little less important.

In the exhibit hall, where Facebook once had a booth with virtual reality games, there was now a booth where attendees could stand on a vibrating board promoted as effort-free exercise which could also boost sexual function. Many of the vendors simply sold Trump merchandise and nothing else. Upstairs, in the main ballroom, the list of speakers was considerably less A-list than in years past. Most potential presidential candidates didn’t show. Aside from Donald Trump, those who did attend had either served in the Trump administration or were political neophytes. And in the halls, it was far less crowded, save for a bottlenecked corner where, at one point, Steve Bannon held court and attendees flocked to see him.

I would love to have a room I could wall paper!

Greyness all around

There is no horizon line today, only a rainy, foggy greyness as far as the eye can see. No water, no boats, no island, no Olympic Mountains. It is this time of year, every year that I start feeling SAD at its' peak. This is the time of year I started taking Bupropion (used to treat depression and to prevent depression in patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is sometimes called winter depression.) There is a constant drip I hear in the bedroom from the downspouts, constant thudding on the skylights. Darkness in the house all day.

So yesterday my sweet little Pixie was suffering some tummy distress and had diarrhea all day. Every time I turned around, I smelled and went on the search. I am unfortunately blessed with an extraordinary "smeller". And of course, it had to be the carpet. So I spent the better part of the day with soapy water in a bucket and a brush, cleaning. I think she must have worked it out of her system, she feels fine today. All carpet in my house is destroyed because of years of dogs and needs to be replaced or I would be a little angrier.

Bri brought me a $10/20lb bag of bird seed yesterday from ACE and a bunch of suet they had on sale. Bri is going to go through David's books too, pick out some for her and maybe make a little free library at her studio for her clients. Apparently they always are talking about books. She is also busy trying to sell the comics.

I made the mushroom quesadilla last night and it was even better than I thought. So good, I made another for breakfast. I had also been really hungry for pasta and sundried tomatoes. I found one of those enormous Costco jars of it in the pantry. Will start brainstorming what else to do with it today.

I see products on Facebook feed that look interesting and immediately go look for another price. They are always twice as expensive on FB. Do you think this Electric Vegetable Cutter actually works? I am dying to find out. It would be a great little gift if it did. I don't know why I am so drawn to the chopper/dicers, but I am. I own a few.

I ran into this comedian, Micheal Yo video. It was hard to turn away after I started listening.

I have been watching Death in Paradise on Prime. Trying to decide if I like it, but there are lots of seasons ... so ... I am constantly trying to find something I am intrigued by on Prime.

I want to see Everything Everywhere All At Once, it looks so i interesting. I might buy myself a viewing for my birthday ;)

In another life, I want to come back as Cate Blanchett. I really do not have star-envy except for her. She seems perfect, perfectly normal, perfectly beautiful, perfectly down to earth, perfectly talented, smart.

Documenting my boring life right now seems to be the only thing that grounds me to reality. So I am going to sign off and go about my cleaning. There is something suspicious going on in my refrigerator.

I bought my friend one of these for her birthday, Wooden Aquatic Sculpture. Crafted with a keen attention to detail, this piece will easily catch the attention of your guests with its originality.

Color and art worth digging

Never, ever use one of your favorite large tupperware containers to make pickled Daikon relish. It stinks, really stinks and permeated the tupperware. I can throw it away or write in marker on the lid, only to use for Daikon Radish relish.

Matt had his wallet stolen out of his truck at his work, with just an extra crew of roofers there that he knew. He reported the theft, canceled his cards, told his boss that his work credit cards had been stolen. He found out yesterday, that before they could shut the Home Depot credit card they had charged over $20,000 dollars of those visa gift cards! God, people are so devious and horrible.

I am always reminded what a Groundhog Day movie I am living when Thursday rolls around so quickly and it is trash time again.

Bri just reminded me that my birthday is quickly approaching. I suggested NO party but I would buy a cheesecake so we can stick some candles in it and the girls can sing Happy Birthday

I have decided to pick the  books I want to read from David's  bedside, and his hidden stash of books under the television, load up the car and distribute them to the Free Libraries dotted around Edmonds. There are lots of them.

I love this house, especially the library! Artist Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant made their home a work of art.

Lessons learned

I spent the morning cleaning and sautéing what seems like a year's worth of mushrooms. I ask myself "did I really need THAT bargain from Costco?". I found an idea for my mushrooms.

I bought Notebook red at Costco for $6.99 a bottle, a good price. I wish I bought more. Days ago I bought a Black Box of reduced calorie Cab that is literally undrinkable! Sickening sweet!

I really love listening to the descriptions of the blind tasting of wine. I prefer a Cab over any red and never drink white. Remember Uncorked? Witness the journey to attain the wine world's highest honor by following six wine experts who will do whatever it takes to pass the world's toughest test and win the coveted title of Master Sommelier. It was so entertaining.

I purchased a Pork Tenderloin last week on sale. Every time I cook a t tenderloin I screw it up.  But I had to cook it last night before it went bad. I decided to try Tenderloin with a honey, Dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar glaze. The trick of course, it NOT overcooking it so I was very careful. Set alarm for 15 minutes to add a little more glaze, then 10 minutes for a total of 25 or until the interior temp was 145. I checked and it was 133 so I left it for 4 more minutes. When I took it out the temp was over 150! Argh. It is a little dry but the glaze is nice. I ate this morning with mushrooms on the side. I see this meal in my future for days!

Mom's crows (as I use to call them)  that hang out on my back deck demanding food are spoiled rotten. When they asked, I feed them something, old bread, meal worms, seed. They are brazen and hardly leave the small deck when I open the door. Bri is picking up some bird seed at Ace. They have a coupon right now, 2-20 lb bags for $20.00. The small bag of bird seed I bought at Home Depot the other day was expensive and didn't last very long at my house.

I was watching the neighborhood Eagle get chased by crows the other day. I always think it is so brave of the Crows and they are persistent. The Eagle will finally relent and fly off to another neighborhood. Crows are NOT messing around!

The Dr. prescribed me Lexapro on my last visit. I filled it but now I am questioning whether I should really take it, do I really need it. I mean, I have experienced true depression in my past but I am nowhere near being depressed right now. I think me saying I felt overwhelmed was the reason she suggested Lexapro for the next 6 months while I work through this.

Listening in

I signed my will and all of those legal documents, had the attorney do the house probate stuff and I feel so relieved to get that over with.

I visited Costco to find/order glasses for my new prescription. He says I have cataracts in both eyes now and the glasses might not help with the night/light/blurriness, but I am willing to give it a try. The next step, would be a surgery option. Mom had it years ago and I remember her doing okay.

Then I gave myself the big talk, DO NOT GOT INTO THIS STORE! But I had the cart, and well, I thought I would saunter over the wine section. Then mayyybbbeee to see the cheeses. Of course I could not resist the spring green box that last forever but is such a bargain. And some lady talked me into buying a 6-pack of lentil soups. And mushrooms, again, a bargain. And olive oil, the only thing I really needed. The good news is I managed to be under $100, that is a first time for me. The bad news is, I had parked in a place impossible to push that cart up to. Anyway, after hauling those boxes up all the stairs into the house, I have decided my Costco shopping days might be over and is something I send the kids to do for me.

Then I decided I deserved a Panera chocolate croissant, right across the street from Costco. I spied a soup I have to go back to try, Chicken Tikka Masala Soup. Maybe I will take to kids out to dinner there.

I noticed something different and interesting about myself today at Costco. It is not so much I was listening to people's conversations on purpose, but I was picking up conversations as I passed them. Two guys were commenting on how good some product was, one of them told the other one, I can make it for you in the most loving way. Two elderly women were talking what sounded like gossip. And many others. I have never noticed that I do this in the past and I started wondering if it is because I am so alone and silent all day, not really saying a word to anyone. To the point when I answer the phone, I find my voice gravely and cracking. I have to explain it is the first time I have used my voice today. I guess it sort of like talking to yourself, which I do much more of now. I also talk to Pixie more, too bad she does not hear me.

I ran across this on some random blog and thought it was interesting. Insects in Art and Religion: The American Southwest.

More Perfect Union

I got sucked down the Kunhardt rabbit hole last night. They have many films I want to watch. The David Brooks documentary was so good.

Kunhardt Films specializes in documentaries about the people and ideas that shape American history. The company, founded in 1987, is run by Peter Kunhardt and his two sons Teddy and George. The Kunhardts have won 8 Emmy Awards, 2 Peabody Awards, a DuPont, an IDA, and two NAACP Image Awards.

I am watching Obama: In Pursuit Of A More Perfect Union. It was hard to find a place to watch but I found it on HBOMAX.

When Words Fall Short

I met Amanda years ago when we both worked at MSNBC in the infant years. I feel in love with her and we remained in touch since then. Such a talented artist with very little ego. She is always searching for her art to sing, different ways to make it sing. David and I had visits with her in our recent trip to Arizona. She chastised me the other day via DM for not painting. She also had hard heard about David and I had to break that news to her. She wanted to share that she has a show coming up in Texas soon with her new set of paintings and her ceramic. I miss seeing her! Also her Instagram.

Russian propaganda gone wild

You wonder where trump gets his propaganda ideas? Just state an outright lie, repeat it over and over and over again. And the dumbest among us will also start repeating it.

Henry Mancini

I am sorry David could not have watched this. He loved the Peter Gunn theme song. Seems Henry Mancini was the epitome of cool.

It's time for cake

We have had two snowy, cold days here in the PNW. Just a light covering of snow but it is cold and dark. As I speak there is a light dusting happening. I had the kids over to spend the night, then all day Monday. What a fun, hand full they are. We baked brownies and Mason loves to conduct "experiments" in the kitchen of flour, salt, corn starch and food coloring. I mean, who could say no, she is so engrossed in mixing concoctions and molding into balls.

I hope everyone caught the orange joke in Ohio talking about football and how the train disaster could have been a lot worse, Oh, the good part is ... he is sending in help via "trump water". My S-I-L snagged one of these in NM that they were handing out during the fires and I got my very own for Christmas. It is a 12oz bottle! HE IS SUCH AN ASSHOLE.
