See Ya Later, Alligator!

This quilt idea is part of the a blog hop organized by Carla of Creatin’ in the Sticks. There are some really great participants this time around – the list is at the bottom of the page. But, I must apologize to y’all. I misunderstood the theme, which is supposed to be travel. Somehow I thought it meant blocks that reflected each other, like a mystery that I did back in 2015. I decided to present it again. Can we call that time travel?

Twin Sisters Mystery Quilt Finished

Twin Sisters Mystery Quilt

Like any two siblings, these twins wrestle for space! Use your favorite fabrics or make it a planned scrappy—it’s up to you. Fabric requirements are shown in yardage, but you can substitute fat quarters as long as the strips are at least 20″ long. Just double the number of strips shown. This quilt finishes 42″ square, although you can always add more blocks to make it larger.

Tips

  • WOF means Width of Fabric.
  • You will need a perfect 1/4″ seam allowance.
  • Stripology ruler or a Shape Cut ruler will make cutting these strips very easy.
  • You will also find a 5-1/2″ square ruler, an 8-1/2″ square ruler and a mat that rotates very useful.
  • Cross off the color names shown and write in yours before you begin.
  • Don’t skip the pressing steps. It’s much easier to press as you go than it is to press the whole top at the end.
  • Use spray starch or Best Press when pressing these strips. You will be making some bias cuts and this will help stabilize that edge, which tends to stretch.
  • Take the time to pin seams when you put rows together. Twisted seams can’t be pressed properly and can make the whole quilt top bumpy and hard to quilt.

Fabric Requirements for the Twin Sisters Mystery Quilt:

  • 1/2 yard border, cut into (4) strips 3-1/2″ wide. (1-1/8 yd if directional)
  • 1-1/8 yard light background, cut into:
        (4) strips 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF;
        (5) strips 2″ wide by the WOF cut into (32) 2″ x 5-1/2″ rectangles and
        (9) strips 2″ wide by the WOF cut into (32) 2″ x 8-1/2″ rectangles.
  • 3/4 yard dark, cut into (10) strips 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF (Includes binding)
  • 1/4 yard medium, cut into (2) strips 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF

Here are all the clues in one document.  You can still do the mystery – just do one clue at a time and don’t peek!
