Piecing tips for short sewing sessions

I often get comments about how much I get done in a small amount of time. I thought I would share some tips that help me keep my work flow. . . well. . . flowing.

BERJAYA

Featuring English Autumn fabrics from Benartex.

These tips are piecing related, if you are looking for tips to keep your life organized, I am not that person. 🙃

I find the best way to get as much done in one short sitting is to keep the motion as repetitive as possible. While this may sound boring, by keeping to the same task I am getting rid of unnecessary movements and steps. This allows me to "get in the groove" of that task and just keep going.

Pressing

This may not seem like part of the piecing process, but before you cut you must press. If I'm pressing anything less than 2 yards I will starch and press the whole piece in one sitting.

BERJAYA

If, however, I'm cutting yards and yards of background fabric I don't do it all at once. I will press a yard or so at a time, using something like a chair to keep the fabric from pulling or laying on the ground. If I need something like sixteen 2 1/2" strips I would press a yard and a half. This isn't set in stone, do what works for you.

BERJAYA

Once it's pressed I bring that yardage over to the cutting table and do the same thing. Place it on a chair or lay the excess off to the side to cut the strips I need from the prepared yardage. I will sub-cut those strips as directed, then head back to the ironing board to starch and press some more.

Cutting

Cutting fabric, you either love it or hate it. I love it. I also like to get it all done at once. This may not sound great, but again, it keeps my work flow moving forward, without a lot of stopping and starting. If you are a quilter that likes to make one block first, this doesn't stop you from doing that. Cut out what you need for one block, put it together to make sure it works like you want, and then come back and start cutting.

BERJAYA

I like to cut multiple strips at one time. Then I take those strips and line them up.

BERJAYA

From there I sub-cut the sizes needed. Not only does this save time, it makes counting the units easier as well.

BERJAYA

If there is any marking that needs to be done I do it right away. I hate having to come back and mark when I'm ready to just start sewing. By having them marked I can sit and sew when I have a free moment.

Sewing

BERJAYA

Chain piecing is your friend. Do it as often and for as long as you can. I chain piece everything; units, blocks, rows. If I can sit and sew it over and over, that's what I do.

BERJAYA

I also like to "chain pin" when needed. I am a pinner, if you aren't you can skip this tip! 😄 When I'm working on the same block I do the same process over and over, and if that means I have to pin 50 blocks, that's what I do. Once they are all pinned I can just start sewing, I will often pin before I quit for the night so I *can* just start sewing. I don't have to stop and start to pin the next one and it's already to go when I have a moment.

BERJAYA

If I don't need to pin the units I will gather what can be sewn all at once. In this instance I'm sewing a background rectangle to the pieced unit. I have all of my rectangles (because I cut everything beforehand) and all of the pieced units layed out and read to go. I just pick one pieced unit, one rectangle unit, sew and repeat.

Pressing. . . Again

Not only do I chain piece and pin, I chain press, too!

BERJAYA

BERJAYA

You will often hear me say in my 2022 Monthly Color Challenge How To Videos to leave the chain pieced units sewn together until you press.

BERJAYA

This is because it is so much faster to "chain press" than to cut them each apart and then press individually.

BERJAYA

For HST units I press one after another, even though you can't leave these sewn together for pressing, but layering them like this I can press over and over and over again.

BERJAYA

The less steps I have to take to piece a quilt, the faster and easier it is to get it done and the more I can accomplish in a short amount of free time.

I hope those tips helped give you new ideas on how to set yourself up for more progress in smaller bits of time. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions!

March 2022 Monthly Color Challenge

It's March and time to get "spicy" again!

BERJAYA

This month our color is inspired by the Pink Peppercorn. Sounds kind of exotic and fun doesn't it?

From AllRecipes:  "Contrary to what their name might tell you about them, pink peppercorns aren't *actually* a peppercorn. In reality, they are dried, berries from a tree. . . . The only reason that they're named as a peppercorn is because they are similar to peppercorns in shape and flavor — at the end of the day, these bright, tiny balls are nothing more than a humble berry."

BERJAYA

Our block for March may resemble the shape of berries a bit, but that was only accidental. I am definitely NOT that organized! Ha! It's another simple block that should come together quickly, as long as we pay attention to the way we lay the signature blocks out.

Pieced Backings - Using yardage tutorial

A new pattern, The Border Quilt 4, means a new pieced backing tutorial!

BERJAYA

I love a pieced backing. 1) It adds interest. 2) It uses up almost all of the extra fabric.

BERJAYA

Sometimes when you have to order online to get fabric for a quilt you need to order more than you need because of the minimal requirement. You can see this The Border Quilt 4 wall hanging doesn't use a lot of fabric. Then add to it that I cut wrong and had to order more. . . my human-ness never shows up more than when I sew. . . I had more fabric left over than I liked. (I don't like to hang onto a lot of fabric.) Here is how I used it.

When it's this small I like to just lay out the top, for larger tops I measure and add the extra 4" around for quilting.

BERJAYA

Then, I start laying out my fabrics. The size of this wall hanging means I don't have to add length to the yardage, I just kept selvages on.

BERJAYA

I started with the dark orange on the bottom, planning to use the dark print in the middle. I also had the lighter orange at the top, but I really didn't like how that felt. The lighter orange is also the binding and I didn't want it to blend in all the way along the top. (Note! Make sure, if you are using the binding fabric, that you cut that first before adding the leftover to the backing!)

BERJAYA

Instead, I decided to do more of a gradient type backing. This just feels good to me. When you have multiple strips, feel free to play around, step back and take a look. If you are really struggling with the layout take a picture and look at that instead. Sometimes it really helps to take a picture and turn it to black and white to see the contrast.

BERJAYA

What my set up really looked like while I took pictures. Ha! When choosing the width of the strips I only made sure it would cover from top to bottom. I love when the strips are not the same width, but you can always trim them to the same width.  Make sure to straighten each edge you are sewing!

BERJAYA

I press the seams all the same direction, but it really doesn't matter.

BERJAYA

Once my backing is pieced I lay the top on it to make sure I have enough fabric all the way around. Note: Since I quilt my own I knew I didn't need to have as much extra on the top and bottom, because I have leaders and enders I can attach for my Babylock Coronet.

BERJAYA

To make sure my strips remain straight on the back I line up the seams on the back with seams on the quilt top and make sure they are aligned the same on the other side.

BERJAYA

A beautiful and simple back!!

Introducing The Border Quilt 4

I am so excited to introduce you to the fourth installment in The Medallion Series from PBJ!

BERJAYA

A beautiful quilt made with traditional piecing and designed with the beginner in mind.

BERJAYA

Each border added grows this quilt to whatever size you choose.

BERJAYA

I went back to a scrappier version of quilt, like that of the original The Border Quilt and I truly love it.

BERJAYA

Add that gorgeous dark background and these blocks just pop.

BERJAYA

Speaking of popping, look at the wall hanging I made! Hello orange!!! It's love.

BERJAYA

By changing the fabric choice this pattern now has a more modern look.

BERJAYA

Let's see what the testers did with this pattern.

BERJAYA

Sherry's top shows how well beautiful batiks work with The Border Quilt 4.

BERJAYA

As a mom of a stars and space loving son, this top from Janice gives me goosebumps. Those friendship star blocks are the perfect ending for this top.

BERJAYA

Beverly's quilt top show's how quickly you can grow your quilt by just adding one more border! Seeing it in these colors I think this might make a great Quilt of Valor pattern, too.

BERJAYA

Melva's top show's how an experienced quilter can take a pattern and truly make it hers. Using the panel meant the measurements were off a bit, so she made her own little borders before adding the Flying Geese border. Just like that she has an original.

I love how each quilt is so unique to it's piecer.

February 2022 Monthly Color Challenge

February is here and I am so ready to share the next block in the 2022 MOnthy Color Challenge!

BERJAYA

This month the block is inspired by the bay leaf. I'm not much of a cook, but when I add that bay leaf into my beef stew I feel like such a chef. 😂

The bay leaf is an aromatic leaf commonly used in cooking. It can be used whole or in a dried or ground form.If eaten whole, bay leaves are pungent and have a sharp, bitter taste. As with many spices and flavourings, the fragrance of the bay leaf is more noticeable than its taste. When the leaf is dried, the aroma is herbal, slightly floral, and somewhat similar to oregano and thyme. - Wikipedia

BERJAYA

This block is only a little bit difficult because of the measuring units, so when making it, take your time. Measure twice, cut once is definitely the goal here. Once the cuts are made strip piecing makes this block a quickie!

January 2022 Monthly Color Challenge

Let's get 2022 started!

BERJAYA

I have been waiting forever to get this Color Challenge started! Well, maybe not forever, but at least 2 months, and in 2021 I believe that counts as forever.

Our spice for January is Saffron, also know as the most expensive spice in the world. ". . .it takes 75,000 saffron flowers to make one pound of saffron spice. The small amount of saffron spice per plant, along with the fact that harvesting must be done manually, leads to saffron's being majorly expensive." - Britanica.com

Um, wow! That is a LOT of plants. Thankfully we only need to make four different units to make this month's Color Challenge block. You're welcome. 😉

BERJAYA

This is a simple, but fun take on the spool block. I love how quickly this block comes together and I hope you do, too! There is a "How To" video included each month and this year there is a video included for the 6" Finished Block size!

The bloggers this year will be sharing their quilts using the color of the month. I love orange so much, but have not made an orange quilt. Here are a few that have orange in them, though. I think what I like about orange is how the different the hues can be.

BERJAYA

Criss Crossing was the very first quilt pattern I had accepted into a magazine publication.

BERJAYA

Broken Panes uses a pumpkin-ey orange that I loved so much I used it as the backing as well.

BERJAYA

Gradient Stars uses a gorgeous orange to highlight the blue.

I think I need to make more orange quilts. . .
