Waiting for the Walk

BERJAYA
While waiting for the Walk for Veterans to begin last week,
these young people found a spot in Songs of Selma Park
to sit and view the river.

Pettus Bridge 75th

BERJAYA
I was there for the 50th anniversary
of the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March.

I was there for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma.

And I was there for the scheduled 75th anniversary
of the opening of the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

State Tourism Director Lee Sentell (pictured taking a picture) was there
yesterday too. So was a lady from Valley Grande, but no one else came!

We hadn't heard that the city canceled the ceremony  earlier in the day,
apparently due to stormy weather. But by 5:30 p.m., the sun shone perfectly
on the north face of the bridge. Crepe myrtles bowed their blossoms,
and The Songs of Selma Park treated us to its summer best!

All was not lost. We took plenty of pictures!

The bridge was designed by Henson K. Stephenson and opened in May 1940.
The ceremony had been delayed until June.

The Bridge Sans the Trees

BERJAYA
After the crepe myrtles were trimmed waaaaaay back for the president's visit
back in March, the view of the Pettus Bridge from Songs of Selma Park is all clear!

Down the Steps

BERJAYA
It's D Week at ABC Wednesday, and D is for DOWN the steps at Songs of Selma Park.

The lower level of the park provides a great view of the Alabama River
and Pettus Bridge. This area will be even busier than usual
through the next few weeks of the 50th anniversary
 of the Voting Rights marches.

Evening at the Bridge

BERJAYA
With Daylight Savings Time, darkness comes slowly to the Alabama River
and the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It is after 6 p.m., and the sky is still blue!

Down Under

BERJAYA
At the corner of Water and Broad, take the Songs of Selma Park steps
down under the bridge. There is a beautiful terrace overlooking the river,
and you will be standing beneath crepe myrtle branches,  an assortment of vines
and even a few clumps of four-o-clocks.

March Theme Day (ELECTRICITY)

BERJAYA
The City Daily Photo Blogs have gone ELECTRIC for the first day of March.

So, when the lights go out in Songs of Selma Park, someone has to replace the bulbs,
and I just happened to be there yesterday to photograph the task. Shine on!

January at the Bridge

BERJAYA

Almost Dark

BERJAYAIt's Skywatch Friday again, and the sky transitions from blue to dark blue over the Songs of Selma Park as night sets in.

Riverfront Photo Winner

BERJAYA
This is a picture of a picture, but here is the winning photo in the adult division of the riverfront photo contest sponsored by Arts Revive. The photographs were displayed on Riverfront Market Day. This view of the Alabama River is taken on a foggy morning from Songs of Selma Park. The Edmund Pettus Bridge can be seen in the background.

By the Bridge

BERJAYAA canopy of crape myrtles shades the terrace of the lower section of the Songs of Selma Park designed by architect John Lucas. The bench is a good spot to watch the river or the traffic on the bridge. Lucas also designed the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., among other memorials.

Songs of Selma Park Entrance

BERJAYAEnter the Songs of Selma Park here, and check the kiosk for a bit of history and information. Then, walk down the steps between the crape myrtle trees for a view of the river and the Pettus Bridge. On a nice day, it's the perfect spot for lunch or just a quick rest.

Songs of Selma Park

BERJAYAThe Songs of Selma Park at the foot of the Pettus Bridge is prettiest in July when the crape myrtles bloom. Located on the corner of Water Avenue and Broad Street, it occupies the space where The Crossing Restaurant was located. The restaurant, which featured excellent cuisine along with antiques in an original riverfront building, burned as a result of arson in 1984.
