a. Identify at least two of the pioneers of the IQ testing movement and explain their contributions to the field
Two of the pioneers of the IQ testing movement I chose were Alfred Binet (who collaborated with his colleague Theodore Simon and Lewis Terman who also worked with Binet on the American version.
Alfred Binet is a French psychologist who is known to have developed the very first practical intelligence test which became the basis for contemporary intelligence tests. He worked with a young medical student who was also his research assistant to come up with what became simply as the Binet-Simon Scale.…show more content…
Lewis Terman, a Stanford University psychologist is another pioneer in the field of IQ Testing because he was instrumental in bringing the Binet-Simon Scale from France to the United States. He adapted the test which became Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test and was widely used that it has become the standard intelligence testing in the US. This was when the concept of intelligence quotient (or IQ) was first introduced. Terman also contributed to the development of the first reliable mass-group intelligence test during the World War 1 which was used by the U.S. Army Alpha and Beta programs.
b. What do you think are some potential pros and cons of the use of IQ testing in schools?
There are two opposing sides when it comes to the issue of IQ testing in schools. Many advocates believe that IQ testing is the best way to identify and assess children’s levels of aptitude and that it is useful in determining who amongst the general school population need additional specialized or differentiated instruction and extra services (GATE or even IEP) that may not be otherwise be provided for in a regular classroom. It is also a tool which can be taken advantage of to help teachers prepare, develop and design better strategies that meet the requirements of all types of learners in the classroom.
