Lumb Hollow

Below are two photos of Lumb Hollow off Ridling Lane
It has changed greatly with the building of the houses which were built by Armitages.

Circa late 1970's- early1980's?

Thanks to Google maps for the second shot.

More "Now and Then"

Susan Jaleel has very kindly sent us some more "now and then" shots
Postcards and information below !

 photo c9cd8e4e-20de-47b6-b6bb-a939c0702f16.jpg

This is a strange postcard and the original looks as though it has been hand-coloured.  I wish I could date ,it but, alas, there is nothing on the card to give a clue.  I'm fascinated by the guy standing at the pavement edge outside the Clarendon.  He could be a policeman with his tall hat! The Mechanics institute was a great landmark, also. The sheer size of it made it unmissable !

 photo 262e43ea-d705-4904-a5bc-f0ce263e43c1.jpg

Same spot in 2007 - taken on a Sunday morning and the shops are open!

 photo d752933e-d661-4e6f-ae78-39ea6925b135.jpg

This card of Stockport Road, taken from near the junction with Rowan Street and looking towards Zion [although you can't see it] is dated 1907, but I think it's very easily recognised even today.  When I was young there were still shops there on the right - Mr Dain's paint shop, who also sold lamp oil, McGowan's paper shop and then I think there was a wool shop just beyond them, although in the mid-50s Roy and Lil Kerfoot opened a very small grocery business in there.  Then there was Griffiths shop on the corner of Knight Street.

Same spot in 2007.

We can't thank you enough for sharing all your great postcards and information with us !
Keep them coming, Susan. They are very much appreciated by the Blog Readers !

Now & Then

Here is a pair of  "Now and Then" photos sent to us by Susan Jaleel.
As you can see, not a great deal has changed over the years !

Broomstair then.
Scanned postcard taken at Broomstair Bridge when it was the county boundary [pre-1974].  The larger of the two signs on the left at the bridge said "Municipal Borough of Hyde, Cheshire" and the smaller one just beyond said "Cheshire", and as far as I'm concerned that's where Hyde still is!  I love the delivery boy and his bike and the EWS [emergency water supply] sign can still be clearly seen on the stone of the bridge.  I would date this picture around 1959-60 I think.

Same spot but taken in 2007.  Notice that the Tameside sign has been sited across the road.

Many Thanks, Susan.
Much appreciated.

Hyde Grammar School

Here are two photos showing "Then and Now" shots of Hyde Grammar School.

Look at how the housing estate has shot up in the second photo !
Hyde Grammar was practically the only building around on the older picture .

Queen Street - Before and After

The two photos below show the same view of Queen Street about 20 years apart.

How different it is now compared with when James North factory stood there.... Looks much nicer and cleaner now but I loved the factory as I grew up playing round there when I stayed at my Nans house. The shadow of my Nans house can be seen on the top photo.

This part of Queen Street had its name changed to become a continuation of Douglas Street.

Thanks to Dave and Beryl for the top photo.

Much appreciated. :)

Now and Then

"Now and Then" shots of Hyde Department Store now home to the Morrisons Store.

The store was originally known as Hyde Department Store or FineFare Superstore and with a retail space of 76,000 square feet was the largest store in the FineFare organisation throughout the country.
It was opened by the popular 70's TV actor, Derek Nimmo in March 1976.
(Thanks Susan ) :)

Spring Gardens

Spring Gardens stands at the bottom of Old Road . It used to lined with old cottages which I believe belonged to Ashton Brothers. Sadly the cottages have been demolished now.

It looked so much nicer with the cottages and without the collection of Wheelie Bins !

The opposite end which, as Dave says in the comments ,the only remaining buildings are The Flowery Field Pub, a house and a shop.

Lodge Lane - 100 years

Here is a postcard looking up Lodge Lane.
It it from approximately 1910 and looks very quiet as most streets were then.
I like the cobbled street and the fact that there was a regular supply of horse manure for the garden to be had! I bet their roses were second to none !

It's nice to see that the shop has survived. Far too many of these have been lost to the superstores over the years as transport means we can get all our shopping at once now as it is all under the same roof....

The George Pub - "Now and Then".

Todays post shows how the George Pub looks now and a comparison shot of how it used to look.

George Hotel

I used to love this pub.
It was a nice friendly place to meet friends, did great food and had some really excellent live music acts on.
Such a shame it was one that disappeared.

Mottram Road views.

Below are two photos that our resident photographer, Dave, took. :)

The first one shows Mottram Road circa middle to late 1980's and show the "Hypermarket" that was originally Hyde Department store. I think it had become Fine Fare by this time. The Moulders pub can just be seen in the distance on the right hand side, peeping out from behind the tree.   Bradley & Sons Funeral Directors is also still in existence on the corner of Fernally Street behind the Billboards.

Also note how much smaller Fernally Street and Union Street were back then.

Photobucket

The second one shows a recent view.
Union Street took over virtually all the spare ground shown on the above shot whilst Fernally Street became 4 lanes rather than the two shown on the first photo..

Photobucket

It's good to see that it's still looking nice and green despite the increase in traffic.

Thanks Dave, as always :)

Nelson Street

The next two photos show that very little has changed on Nelson Street in the last 40 years or so. Parts of it are one way now though.

Nelson Street early 1970's

The corner shop between Nelson Street and Travis Street is no longer there though. The Slater family used to live there when I was growing up.
