Aeriel View

Here is an aeriel view from the late 1960's.
It shows, amongst other things, the Baptist Chapel on Chapel Street which was founded in 1869 and closed in 1971.
It has now been demolished.

Henry Street runs down to the left of the photo and Holmes street is to the left of the Chapel.

Aerial View

Here is an aerial view of part of Hyde/Gee Cross area .

 photo 0fce226f-9a41-4bfa-ac9a-9e2d8e2df658.jpg

Bottom left you can make out Redferns Industrial Estate. Stockport Road runs across just above it. The dense foliage is Gower Hey Wood, incorporating the Trans Pennine trail which runs along the old railway line. The Cemetery can be seen top left to top middle of the photo and the field at the top right is Buttercup Meadow. The houses to the bottom right are, from the bottom, Brooks,Coronation and Auburn Avenues which are located off King George Road.

Many thanks to John H for the photo.
Much appreciated.

If anyone else has anything of interest to do with Hyde, Hattersley, Godley, Gee Cross and Newton, old or new, that they would like to share, please send it to us. at hydonian@gmail.com

Aeriel View of New Market Square 1968

Here is another aeriel view of the Market and the new development in 1968.
The HSBC Bank is still very recognisable from this photo but many of the old shops have gone, amongst them the shoe shops and the butchers shop that were opposite Woolworths.
Look how many market stalls there were then compared with todays market ! This was maybe because the old market hall was demolished and the new one wasn't ready? Does anyone know?
The old Methodist Church that stood on Norfolk street can be seen top left of the photo.
Parking was available where the DHSS building now stands (bottom right).

Thanks to John Hopwood for the great photo !!
Much appreciated. :)

Aerial map of James North and area

We received this message and photo from Brian H  via email today
Over to Brian...
"I have just come across this photo which may be of interest.
In the early 1990's a guy spent a couple of days flying around in a light aircraft taking aerial photos of the town
We bought this picture from him and put it in a 'safe place' ,so safe in fact, we forgot that we had it. What a pleasure it was to find it again earlier today.
Of particular interest are Bell's on Dowson Rd and, of course, the James North premises.
Hope you like it... keep up the good work with the website..."

Aeriel View from Gee Cross Mill

The following was sent to us via David Barlow

"This might be of interest to you Hydonians.....Early 1980's panoramic  picture of  Cross Cliffe and Daisy Bank cottages at the bottom of Apethorn Lane. The picture was taken from the top of the now demolished Gee Cross Mill.  Across the fields and in the distance you can just make out Pole Bank Hall. "

Green End Farm

The following description comes from the History Of Hyde.
I don't know of any photos that exist of this farm.

"Green End Farm, a picturesque old place, stood in Grafton Street, and part of it's land sloped steeply into Wilson Brook...."

A 1970's aeriel view shows the area the farm stood in to the top right. George Street runs along the bottom whilst Newton Street (pre motorway) goes from top to bottom.

Thanks to Cheshire Archives for the maps.

Aeriel view of Hoviley.

premotorway-1

An early 1970's aeriel map before the M67 motorway was opened showing Hoviley Brow and where Morrisons Supermarket now stands. Mottram Road runs across the bottom of the photo
. postmotorway
A look at a modern map shows that the shape of Hoviley Brow/Hoviley was kept to a degree, just the name was changed, as a continuation to Clarendon Place. I think they should have kept the name Hoviley .... although, on a post from   15th November 2011 there is still a sign stating "Hoviley" on the wall on Commercial Street.

Looking along Hoviley, towards Hoviley Brow in the far distance, (going up to the left) and George Street (going up to the right). The white building is the Kings Arms Pub.
(Many thanks Meglet and Hyde Lad) :)
